I dont see fingers being curled mentioned enough when good technique is being discussed. One of the most helpful things i ever implemented. There are some exceptions like partial barres (especially in DADGAD) where your index finger is holding down the lowest three strings and nothing else but for the most part avoiding the bent backwards finger is SUPER helpful

I kid you not i was doing these hammer on/pull exercises today and i started at 100bpm, ended up at 165/170bpm. For me thats insane! I usually get messy around 145bpm, but kept working on it, resting for a bit, working. This video seriously helped me understand how to improve, THANK YOU!!

This guy is FANTASTIC! Really like your videos homie. You have really helped me focus on my playing. I used to just jam all the stuff I know how to do fairly easily, but never took the time to actually sit down and understand what I'm doing and why. Videos like this help me take my playing to another level. I've never been able to play like I can now. Its an amazing feeling to know you've put in the time and work, then finally, it all pays off. 🎸

The specific string grip is the MAIN aspect, for control....If you are not comfortable holding ALL the Strings at the same time, you will lack strength and ability to direct your fingers to FEEL the strings properly and move around comfortably. Also, there are specific PETTERNS in phrasing that are easier that others...that help CONNECT all the notes and scales you need for any type of shredding techniques.

Hi! I’m a fiddler so my left hand is really fast. Still have things I need to work on, chiefly getting my strength back, so this is helpful! Where I really *really* need help with is my right hand! It needs to catch up! Think you could make a video about how to get your right hand faster? That would be so helpful (just like this one was!)

Really appreciate this, a rare easy to understand and exceptionally useful guitar tutorial on this topic on this platform. Random question but are you double jointed? I ask only because I'm double jointed and keeping my ring/pinky fingers curled can be a real challenge for me sometimes, both those fingers have the annoying tendency to lock up in that double jointed position and definitely not in the ideal curled position. Was wondering if you have experienced this (if you're double jointed of course but I'm fairly certain you are based on your fingers lol)

The "underside" works for me on higher strings. I struggled with solely relying upon the curled fingers. Smart use of both techniques can work quite well imo. Paul Gilbert also uses synthesis of both I guess.

Hello Gavin good morning. Terrific stuff: very clearly and logically explained, Compliments! Would you mind to answer a question? Do you have a sistematic process to establish when it is time to go on from what you are practicing today to new stuff (basically pure technique)? My problem : I cannot normally bring my studies to the bpm speed i want to because it would last forever, and of course I have also to integrate new material in my routine. What are the signs you notice (or the process you use) to put that particular thing to the side (and maybe revisit it in the future?) and bring in new stuff to learn? i hope this make some sense :D Thank you in advance and keep rockin´! maxx

Do you use exclusively Index Ring and Pinky? How about 3NPS combining Pentatonic box shapes? Like box-5 and box-1 of E Pentatonic pull-offs on high E & B strings. You know,...15P.O.12 P.O.10.

I have been a self taught guitarist for years, tried a few lessons and had teachers tell me things like I wasnt pressing down hard enough to get good pull-offs. Never sat right with me so I canceled. Simply realizing the pull-offs as pulling down and not off is incredible. Learning this would have saved me hours and hours of wasted play. Thank you so much!

Playing electric guitar alone will weaken your fretting hand so we must pick up our acoustic guitar as often as we can. I know because it happened to me. Now I've got to go through the process of getting my left hand strong as it should be. A dreadnought with 0012 - 0053 gauge strings will do it.

When pulling off things like the B and G string, are you muting the lower strings with the index finger, I find myself hitting the high e or just any lower string than the pull off string
@gavinbrooks100
@gavinbrooks100 Жыл бұрын
Yes! Basically always muting the higher strings with my index, but also try to minimize hitting the other strings with your pulls as much as possible.

The thing I’m not sure when thinking about „pulling down“ on pull-offs. Sure. On the high-E this works just fine, but how do I pull down on like the lower-E without hitting another note? :/

I have a question, my pinky cracks and pops when using it sometimes when doing lead licks or exercises. Does this mean my left hand isn't that strong and i have to strengthen my left hand pinky by doing guitar exercises? I noticed that my right hand pinky doesn't crack when i do the same movement. But again my right hand is stronger.
