I think it’d be interesting if Apple alternated annually between a Mini phone and a Plus phone. That way if you wanted a specific form factor, you’d only have to sacrifice a years worth of upgrades (not much considering the changes year-to-year seem to be getting smaller).
@anomanderrake5434 Жыл бұрын
Haha. That's why they won't do it. They want you to buy every year. And also if there was a enough demand for small phones, apple will be able to produce a mini + normal size every year and people will upgrade it every year (whoever does it). They don't do it cause there's no demand.
@TheAleQc Жыл бұрын
There is plenty of demand. They are waiting for people to ALMOST give up and be desperate for it. Then they have your money trapped. Those years follow by that being the only option.

I’ve settled on keeping my iPhone until Apple drops support (I.e 7-8 years), it worked great for me with the 6s and whatever stunts Apple pulls in the interim I expect it will be long enough for my preferred form factor to go out of fashion and then come back again.
@lifeinhd4053 Жыл бұрын
@@anomanderrake5434 They also botched the launch and did a terrible job marketing it. The 12 came out like a month before the 12 Mini, so if you simply couldn't wait you'd be forced to get the larger phone, and some people (like my friend) thought "cheapest iPhone at launch = smallest iPhone" and mistakenly ended up with a 12 when he really wanted a Mini. On top of that, because it was called the Mini, if you just walked into an Apple Store and asked for an iPhone, they'd automatically saddle you with the larger screen size. They should have simply called it the iPhone, with every other size having a different name from there. But of course they would never do that, because the real goal of the Mini lineup wasn't actually to sell, but rather to stealthily increase the starting price of the larger iPhone by $100, and in that they very much succeeded.
@jamiepoirier1444 Жыл бұрын
Something worth noting about the Minis is that the single hand-able form factor means that one of iOS' biggest usability drawbacks-no dedicated back button-is pretty much a non-issue. reaching your thumb across the screen to gesture swipe backward feels so intuitive. I had really large phones, some of the largest ones on Android (proper phablets). Eventually I got sick of that size, how cumbersome it was, and how you got the worst parts of both devices (phones and tablets). As a result i love the Mini form factor, it's perfect. When I want a bigger screen, I just use a tablet. Best of both worlds.
@whenhen Жыл бұрын
The problem for the mini is that the iPhone 13/14 base models fit perfectly fine in smaller hands. Both my fiancée and I have really small hands (both of us wear child large gloves), and found it exceedingly cramped when we held it, while the base iPhones felt much more natural to hold even one handed. Plus even the iPhone Mini can’t fit in front pockets of women’s clothing, so the portability aspect is kind of moot. Both the base iPhone and mini fit just fine in the rear pockets of jeans so there’s not really a practical benefit unlike say the Z Flip line of phones.
@eduardobarreto5555 Жыл бұрын
To me, a bigger phone is only good if you don't have a tablet. I don't like to just lounge and browse social media on my phone since even the largest phone screens are rather small to be using for a long time. Now that I have an iPad I only use my phone for communication on the go, reproducing music, taking photos, and using Uber-like services. None of which benefit too much from a larger screen that sacrifices comfort in my pocket.
@farhadkader Жыл бұрын
@@eduardobarreto5555 I agree with you, If you have a tablet you really don’t need a big phone. Also, the squared-off design formula that phones are trending to now makes handling larger phones even more cumbersome. It works well for small to medium sized devices but not for larger devices. The few of us that bought the mini were the happiest among them and many would actually sell the current flagship to “downgrade” to the mini from the Pro/Pro Max. Unfortunately, I think we’ve seen the mid of the mini as a current gen device. I’ve kept both my 12 and 13 minis and occasionally switch to them when the mood strikes. That would make sense for bigger phones being widely available, not smaller phones dying out. Large phones became convenient for manufacturers because they could more easily boast better specs, including larger batteries. And it's also not a case of people voting with their wallets or anything, smaller phones just became less and less common. People couldn't really vote because there was no real choice.

I am 56, and my eyesight has deteriorated over the last five years. A Mini is a categorical no-go. I recently replaced the iPhone 13 Pro Max for the 14 Plus (in red) as I simply don’t need all the features of the Pro series. I sold it for 850,-€. The 14 Plus is my on the go device, and I adjusted the font size considerably (even though I wear glasses). At home I use my iPad Air M1. I work 100% remote from home and have three monitors on my desk. I watch TV on my 58 inch ‚monitor‘ as I stream TV with the German Telekom Magenta TV service via Apple TV 4K and the TV set isn’t even hooked up to the internet (as all of them habe pretty crappy smart TV software anyways). I must say, I love the 14 Plus. Battery is amazing, weight is comfort, photos really good and I use it together with Apple Watch Series 8.

I bought a used 13 mini (256 GB) and 'been using it for a few months. It's my first iPhone and I have to say it's great to have a high-end smartphone this small. Battery isn't the best, buy I don't use it too extensively, so it's about right for me. My biggest complaint is actually thermals: it gets uncomfortably warm when watching videos for long periods of time. If I have to mention something I like about apple is that they don't force you to buy oversized phones in order to get the best specs. They may have ditched a 14 mini in favor of a 14 plus (the latter being outright stupid IMO), but at least there's a 14 pro with the EXACT SAME features as the 14 pro max, no downgrades other than the screen size and battery, obviously.

Just upgraded from the XS to a Product Red 13 Mini. I knew I was swapping my XS this year, as it's about to lose the latest iOS, but its battery health (or lack of it) hastened the upgrade. These include a portable charging stand that I can use on the go, and to trigger Standby Mode when I'm home. Thanks for the content!

I agree that smaller phones are just much more comfortable. I've been using the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra for over two years, but coming from an S7 Edge, I found it too big, and I could never get used to its huge size. So I pre ordered the base S23, and honestly, I don't miss anything about that brick... Phone manufacturers have been moving towards larger phones, which shifted the people's preferences. Honestly, if you want a large display, just get a tablet or something like the Galaxy Fold

Same. I used my S6 edge for 5 years. (Only God knows how that phone lasted this long). And I then switched over to Samsung's A6+ in late 2021. (My dad had bought it for himself in 2018, but didn't open the box for 3 years. So I started using it instead) The smaller size also meant that I dropped my phone less often. My S6 edge got it's first crack after 3 years. My A6+ on the other hand got it after 4 months.

I think smaller phones win ease of use and handling by a mile as someone with small hands. And they’re cute, too. BUT even as someone with small hands I’ll still say having a big beautiful display to enjoy content on makes it a worthwhile trade-off for me. But then I also love big TVs and big computer monitors. Just my take though, I think it’s wonderful that everyone has different priorities with tech and I’m glad there are options and competition for all sorts of folks and I certainly hope “mini” phones come back better than ever for small phone lovers!

Everyone I know who has a 12/13 Mini has one thing in common: They're heavy iPad users. If they can, they'll do many of the things I would normally happily do on my 13 Pro Max on an iPad instead. The numbers don't really lie - 6.1" phones seem to be the sweet spot for most people, while bigger phones tend to be for people who expect a bit more from their phones. There's a reason big phones are pretty much ubiquitous in developing markets where someone's smartphone is often their only device. It looks as though the "small phone wanting" (ie. the Mini) demographic isn't big enough for Apple to want to bother with, but the "small or cheap phone wanting" (ie. the SE) demographic is. Given the current state of the SE, I'd be pretty surprised if it didn't get updated to use the 13 Mini form-factor soon.
@mgraham01602 ай бұрын
This also plays into why so many tech reviewers want small phones: everything that most people also do on their phone, they use one of the million other devices they have. If I had something like the Tab S8 Ultra, then yeah, maybe I would want a smaller phone since I could do anything that needs a big screen on my tablet. However, getting that and a small phone would cost significantly more than just buying a bigger phone and using it for everything. Plus, as much as my S24+ is less portable than a smaller phone, it's much more portable than having to carry around two devices, one of which is a 14 inch tablet! We will see if the 2025 iPhone SE comes in a mini form factor.....

So much that I skipped the entire 6-10 generations of iPhones just because of their size, and even though I really, _really_ wanted 3D Touch. (I had a 5 and then SE.) Unfortunately, the 13 Mini is too large for one-handed use, for me. So my choice came down to - 13 Mini: no one-handed use, no telephoto lens, less battery life, more pocketable - 13 Pro: no one-handed use, yes telephoto lens, more battery life, less pocketable. If I could use the Mini 1-handed, that might’ve been worth giving up the camera lens I almost always use* and the battery life. But if I’m not getting 1-handed use no matter what, I may as well have the camera lens I almost always use* and some more battery life. * I take a lot of photos, and I can’t remember the last time I intentionally used less than 2x zoom, and 3x zoom is often perfect. About the only times I use 1x are when I’m trying to capture something quickly and it’s all I can do to even get the phone out, camera open, and click-usually I’d rather have 2x-5x zoom for those photos, too, but I don’t have time for one more thing or I’ll miss the shot.

If not for the lack of periscope zoom lens, the Xperia 5 would probably be the perfect slab phone for me. Instead, I settle for the Xperia 1 series, which is still fairly narrow. (It's about the width of an S10e.) Of the iPhones that have come out the last few years, the 12 mini was my favorite exactly because of the size. I only disliked the notch getting in the way of ultra-wide content and the short battery life. My buddy is about 5’0” and got the iPhone 14 Pro. He complained that mine was way too big and he couldn’t get a comfortable grip to use it. Both of us are glad that we got the phones we did and both of us did not like the other phone as well. A petite person would not go out and buy an XL shirt, likewise, a large or XL person would not go out and buy a small shirt. I feel this sentiment is lost on a lot of people when shopping for a purchase as large as your daily driver smartphone and a lot of people become conflicted (I’ve heard a story about someone who bought the Pro, only to use it for a week and trade it in for the Pro Max because they couldn’t decide which one they wanted to get when they bought it)
