Josh Altman saying if you asked him last week about price gouging he wouldn't even know what it is. That is because he is usually the one doing the price gouging on a regular basis. He is the one always trying to sell a property at record price and get the most commission in his pocket. Brokers like him have made developers rich and of course himself rich. He has helped make it that much harder for a family to own a home in Los Angeles County. Now he is concerned about price gouging because it is something to get some face time over right now. You won't find him volunteering to feed the firefighters or help anywhere in LA. He is too busy closing his next deal and cashing in on this tragedy.

Notice that he didn’t really answer the question about how property owners are getting around the rent control law (“10% rule”). Instead he jumped into “Well, we’re going to see what the punishment is….” He knows very well how about any loopholes. Some people are able to avoid the rent control law by putting “new” housing on the market, so they can set the rent price high from the start. Those “new listings” are former AirBnb’s that are now on the market for rent. This guy has to know that.

Rich people pay the most taxes, but get the least amount of help while poor people pay the least amount of taxes and get the most amount of help. They are not in the business of helping the poor FYI. Houses should not be investments in the way that they currently are, but decades of inflation (and the easy leverage a mortgage provides) that make people park extra cash in homes that people should be living in! Park your money in an index fund if you're lazy and want a return, OR start a real business that offers a product or service that the market wants. Real estate should not be this expensive and so far out of step with the wages of the local population. This is one of the many ills that inflation does to a society over time. Demand more from your politicians who tax you - either with your voice (vote) or with your feet (exit).

I am saying that the incentives are so messed up that investors feel the need to pile all their cash into real estate to protect it from inflation - homes have become savings tools because the US dollar is so bad at being a saving tool itself. And the result of all of this, is you get a landlord class and renter class and over time, that creates terrible friction in society. It tears community values apart.

What a fraudster! I recently received an application for rent for a property I was listing from one of his associates and all they cared about was how much commission they were getting. It is not that bad here in LA. I have another listing in the valley listed well below market that received fair amount of applications; nothing like this guy is exaggerating about. He is a fraud! His associates care nothing about but their own commissions. These guys are people I would avoid as a consumer.

As a realtor for over 25 years, I can tell you......98% of realtors are not like this guy. Notice how he brags about all the business he's doing? Notice how he keeps talking incessantly? And how many times he says....."I, I, I..." We in the 98% are hard-working and devoted to our clients, just trying to help them get what they want, and do it according to the law and proper business ethics. We spend 2-3x more time listening to our clients than we do talking. Sorry for the rant, but this guys really bugs me. PLEASE.... do not assume all realtors are like this one guy! We are not.

Damn, you are right. Just looked, there are 50,000 rental listings, 15,000 for sale listings across Los Angeles. Rental prices going up by 60% in Beverly Hills is supply and demand. These NIMBY deca-millionaires that benefited for decades from low development in these exclusive enclaves aren't entitled to equivalent properties at pre-fire prices. Also, who's to say 20% or 30% increases in rent is price gouging? These landlord's home insurance is about to quadruple if they're even able to find a private insurance provider. The government interfering here is going reduce rental supply. Landlords will sell the homes to private equity or list them on Airbnb as short term rentals.

Born and bred in Los Angeles, and I know for a fact the people that lived there won’t be rebuilding nor going back. The “Pali” community was an oasis within Los Angeles County for the rich or those not so rich to live their normal everyday lives amongst themselves. You didn’t see paparazzi. Noand no one was asking for autographs. It was a hidden gem that’s sadly now gone. The people there cherished their privacy. Now it’ll just be a tour spot like Rodeo Drive.

If a person decides to delist their property for sale and instead list it for rent at crazy high prices, you can’t do anything about that. That will bypass the 10% rule. If someone decides to list their 2nd home that was vacant you can’t do anything about the high prices as it wasn’t listed before.

People in neighboring communities will have to give up their homes for the displaced wealthy people. We'll be pushed out by the extreme cost of insurance, and the predatory landlords will buy up our homes to rent for exorbitant prices.

Imagine living in construction site in next 5-8yrs, and costs of construction and materials will be skyrocketing, thats why insurance wont cover it.

As a kid that moved a lot growing up. The kids will adapt and become tougher for it. You really don’t need anyone if you moved a lot as a kid. You know that.

If you have never seen this before, visit Las Vegas. I own, however, that rentals have tripled in the last two years, and we are now the top state for the lack of affordable housing. Homelessness has also tripled.
