I feel like I have never heard any BMW owner ever mentioned fuel economy. Probably because when you can spend $80,000 on a sedan gas is the least of your concern. I do have one question, do BMWs come standard with turn signals or is that a option you have to pay extra for. Asking for a friend it would explain a lot.

I was a tow truck driver in new York City and new Jersey. I can tell you BMW'S are number one for being garbage. It doesn't matter what mileage it has because I towed from brand new to 50 year old BMWs. One time I towed a females bmw in Manhattan 2 times in a week. Why do you think that anyone and there grandma can afford a bmw. In NJ where I lived there are 3 idiots that own BMWs but they broke down so much that they just leave it parked on there drive way sitting acting like it will get them rich in the future or to show people, hey I own a bmw. Personally when I see people driving that garbage I just wonder how many times it was in the shop. I remember one time the bmw dealers around NJ was full of cars to get fixed that I had to tow the car to there house and they had to wait for the dealership to call them to say it was ok for them to tow it in. I can have all the money in the world and still never buy that piece of garbage they call a bmw. They actually have to give me money to drive a bmw because if it breaks down on me I will leave it where it sits.

Take a look at any 10 yr old BMW and compare it to a 10 yr old Lexus or Toyota. The BMW plastic is all brittle and discolored, the hoses crap and the paint is too. The seat cloth and leather is worn slick and sometimes torn too. Hell, my Caddy CTS Vsport is 8 yrs old and looks new. The most expensive to fix cars I have owned are Mercedes, Peugeots, Volvos and a '92 Dodge Spirit. My wife has owned 3 Lexus Hybrid SUV's and they were ALL flawless. We looked at another this year and the new ones have a turbo 4, and we will pass on it. Hey Lexus, if your customer comes in to buy their 4th model of your car in a row, and walks out after 10 minutes, you KNOW you did something WRONG.

On my 2007 Z4 Coupe 3.0 si (new 67000 euro) I had a ABS pump failure after 80.000 km. Replacement and repair at the BMW dealer was 2000 Euro. It was a very tiny problem, the small carbon contact in the electro motor got stuck in its tiny housing. Normally i would have changed the motor on the pump for 100 euro but in this case the electro motor was not bolted on the ABS pump and couldn't be replaced. Not very smart engineering. Now I still have a sticky steering problem (only on warm days), but that should be a quick fix according to KZbin. These were my problems in 120.000 km. I still have the car. I do the maintenance oil, filters and brakes myself. So these costs are minimal.

I own 2 Bimmers and they do drive very well, what I suggest for any German car is that you don't buy them but rather lease them. German cars are made at 9/10ths to their limits, there is little room for error, thus why repairs are horrible. If BMW scalled back with some its tech and use of plastic hoses and focused on what makes a car a car and not a computer that so happens to be a car then maybe it would be worth buying. I respect BMW for giving people the best all around experience that money can by, they really are into extreme engineering, but its just short lived. You really need to be on top of your car. My BMW is monitored and inspected by a dealership. It is very convenient in helping me service my vehicle, and being a guaranteed customer has given my discounts on service and repairs that and being a navy veteran 😅. BMW is a truly a love-hate relationship. You gotta know what your getting yourself into. I dont care what year or model BMW you own, a BMW is a BMW!!!

A friend of mine (meaning he wasn't a made guy yet) once had a 1985 BMW 325. It wasn't terribly powerful or fast but that engine was all metal and could take a beating, which he dished out. Despite how he drove it that thing hardly ever had anything go wrong with it. And it was also easy to work on yourself. Now the engines internally seem to be fairly solid but all that plastic stuff breaks and isn't exactly cheap to replace either.

Some are worse than others, but some parts are ridiculous (thousands for a headlight) and dealer repairs are a small fortune. I bought a 2005 X3 3liter with 187k plus as parts are a lot cheaper. 2006 X3 water pump (electric) is minimum of $600, the 2005 mechanical is $34. Car runs great, no codes, does need a few bushings that will be "fun" but I can do most of my own work on cars. $5850 out the door with tax. Could use a vanos rebuild, but a lot of the typical issues had already been done. It was a lot less than similar other make vehicles, drove better, and I can buy a lot of parts for the $5000 I saved over the others. But if you can't do your own work, don't buy one!

At a certain point you just pay more for higher capabilities. Thats not excusing bmw engine issues, but it does explain the plastic etc... There is no excuse for their terrible decision regarding run flat tires, those are a flat out inferior product. These premium suvs have every possible electrical feature, are routinely 400-ish lb/ft, have sophisticated dampers, can tow more than the f150 i grew up with, have completely damped nvh in every panel, and the expensive list goes on and on. At some point the bleed has to stop right? Either plastics show up somewhere or it's just rolls pricing.

As a BMW tech, Scotty is right… on maintenance. besides that any car can become considered "unreliable" with someone who does not do the basics of "reading basic maintenance" for your vehicle. BMW's have so many electronic components that tell you basically anything and everything about the vehicle. Ive maintained my 2016 M2 with 97k miles since 20k miles and its still running great with what i have put into the vehicle. Scotty in all reality, is stuck in his "my day" mindset. I never understood why car mfrs started putting the plastic covers over the engines. On top of that, some hoods have a foam under the hood that supposed to also help dampen noise (now the fabric probably isn't going to cause any issues as air can circulate between the fabric liner/hood and the top of the engine so that part might be OK, but the plastic/rubber covers are pointless IMO. If you spil a little oil, you clean it up). The only thing I can think of is some cars have wires that run across the top of the engine, and possibly the cover covers those up and protects them, but beyond that there isn't really a need for them, other than to keep the engine clean, which IMO nobody really cares. I'd rather have a cooler running engine (or one that at least doesn't have extra stuff that could make it run hotter on warm days) than a super squeaky clean engine. Nobody really ever looks at the engine compartment anyway, except for maybe if you're selling the vehicle. The parts debacle is also another reason why there are benefits to buying a run-of-the-mill car like a Camry, Corolla, Civic or Accord. There are generally a lot of aftermarket parts you can use and they don't always need specific parts (I know some who have Porsches and you have to use OEM parts for certain things on those and it can be expensive). The same is true for your Honda or Toyota but there are more options for some of the lesser important parts like suspension parts or basic engine components like starters or alternators. But I think the high prices for parts for luxury cars is typical across the board. Look at others like Porsche and even Mercedes. There's a reason why you can find a 4-5 year old one with 50k miles for about 40%-50% of its new price. Your typical 5 year old Toyota or Honda with 50k on it will cost about 60%-70% of new so while they are cheaper cars, I think those (Honda and Toyotas) hold their value better on a percentage-of-new-price basis, not just dollars.

Ha ha, I remember when run-flat tires came out 😋 . I was one of the techs at a Goodyear service center at the time & everybody in the shop had to get certified in order to change run-flat tires. At the time if someone ran over a nail or something and got a flat and brought it in to be fixed our fee at the time was something like $14. Now if someone ran over a screw or something and got a flat with Goodyear run-flats and brought it in to get fixed our standard fee for them was $68. Here's the kicker. The only difference between fixing a standard flat and fixing a flat on a run-flat tire was we had to snap a little piece of plastic on the bead chaser of the tire machine so it didn't scratch one of the expensive rims that the run-flat tires go on. Other than that the procedure for fixing the same type of flat on either type of tire was exactly the same 🤣🤣🤣🤣 ...

@@scuthan Ha ha 😋 . I don't think anyone uses them any more because they were 💩 & rode like it too since they had really stiff sidewalls. If someone ran over & nail or screw in the tread somewhere, in most instances it was repairable, we just put a good patch on the inside of the tire, however it depended on how much damage was done by the time they got it to the shop to get it fixed as to whether or not it was repairable or just needed replaced altogether.
