Exactly! I too thought his books were interesting, although I noticed they would start out strong and then sort of peter out to a less than satisfying (coherent?) ending. But after seeing him try to "debate" Murray and Taibi, I realized he is at best a 3rd rate thinker whose books probably only represent an editor's polish but otherwise lack real substance.
@naryanr
@naryanr 4 ай бұрын
@@harrisonjay-l5v His main problem is that he's more interested in telling a story than in telling the truth. When facts need to be skewed to make a good story, he's quite happy to do so, perhaps for the “greater good”, or perhaps for his bank account. I don't know. But the point is, because he doesn't live in truth, he struggles in factual debate, and his ego won't let him simply lose, so he feels compelled to attack personally.
@harrisonjay-l5v
@harrisonjay-l5v 4 ай бұрын
@@naryanr That's very insightful! I think you've got it just right. And perhaps that speaks to what I felt was a real characterological thing about him. In the "debate", he sounded so small and petty. Sort of desparate and grasping. It was such an ugly performance. And perhaps unrelated, perhaps not, Gladwell didn't let his teammate, Michelle Goldberg, a highly intelligent, thoughtful, articulate person, get a word in. (Although she could have asserted herself more.)
