Good video. 1) I leave the grey tank closed. Too many stories of sewer flies. 2) We use Angel Soft. It actually broke down better than the RV toilet paper when I did the toilet paper experiment. 3) The most important thing is to use is lots of water. 4) The Unique digest it works great. I use Dawn and Borax as my treatment and add the Unique Digest It the night before I dump. I tried almost every drop in. Borax and dawn was the first thing that worked to fix the smell issue. 5) I use my tank flush all the time. I do the fill and dump until the water comes out mostly clean. I have found, the flush does not seem to hit my sensors very well. Every so often I have to pull out the wand and really hit the sensors.

Mark, thank you for bringing up the issue with the sewer flies! Please add that "No Bleach" products are to be used in any RV; they deteriorate the rubber/plastic components. Also, installing a clear elbow gives you a visual how well your tanks are emptying!

Use a dedicated hose on the black tank flush to prevent cross contamination, it helps if it is a different color from the fresh tank hose (black). Create a black tank flush kit and place it in a closable 5 gallon bucket to prevent getting crap on other items in the storage bin (garden hose, gloves, strap wrench (helps to remove the sewer line cover connection at times), etc.) When staying at a site that has a dedicated sewer hook up keep the black tank closed and only flush when full or needed.

Especially loved tip #10! 😂 The only thing we think is probably something that doesn’t work are the ice 🧊 cubes. The melt too fast to be truly effective. BTW at the beginning of your video I recognized the Dunlawton Avenue causeway that leads to the Dunlawton Ave (Port Orange) bridge and the Pirates Cove as you turned south onto A1A. Port Orange has been our home since 1980! Hope you enjoyed our area!

Biggest thing we've found with keeping our black tank flowing as it should is to use LOTS of water. So when we go to dump our black tank, we will fill the rest of the way with plain water. Can't have too much water. We also use dawn dish washing liquid, about a 1/4 cup on travel days, so it can slosh around in there.

#10 = YES! Definitely. So many people don't even know. As for RV toilet paper. We wasted so much money and time going to the RV dealer to get it, only to find our favorite butt wipe of choice worked just fine (your mileage may vary, please consult an RV plumbing professional). We've been using our usual Quilted Northern Ultra Soft and Strong with no issues. That said, proper application of tank treatment is of supreme importance! The Unique stuff is great. Happy Camper is also wonderful, if not as convenient as the pods. We've also used the Walex BioPak pods. The BioPaks are available with either "pine" or "orange" scents that can be a bit overpowering, but may serve the same job as the PooPouree.

When rinsing the black tank, after letting the sprayer fill the tank and then dumping it however many times you like, also run it for a while with the valve open. It’s essentially a sprinkler and after a small layer of water is covering the bottom it is ineffective at blasting stuff off the bottom of the tank. You’ll be surprised how much extra much you’ll see run out the hose letting it blast away at the bottom for a while. And #10 is a constant battle with my wife and son. He is autistic so has a good excuse but she is perfectly happy letting me do it. Doesn’t really matter in the long run though because on the rare occasions she does put a new roll on, I always have to remove it and put it back on the right way…

Great tips, I learned a couple, like poo-pourri, I am hypersensitive and cannot use artificial fragrances. Also, very sensitive to formaldehyde, so using black tank enzymes us a great tip. I use baking soda to clean bathroom, but will try the ice trick. Now here is a new trick I came up with to put empty tp rolls to good use: I cut the empty rolls into rings, drop a few drops of lavender and peppermint oil inside each ring and loop them through the hook part of a clothing hanger. Hung inside closets, they help repel moths and carpet beetles. I also tack them inside wall cabinets with pushpins, or they can be tossed in drawers and cabinets to help repel mice.

You guys are so cute. Hubby and I argue the over or under TP issue. lol. But seriously a long time ago when a friend told us of a problem they had we started also closing the grey tank especially at night. It never happened to us personally but I hear that it is possible for little critters to crawl up to your tank and then into your RV. Anyway we decided it wasn't worth the risk so we just close the tank. It's a simple step to drain just the grey when we need to.

Dont forget to always leave an inch or so of water in the toilet. Some folks leave the seal dry, which causes it to wear out sooner and leak black tank gasses into the RV. Ugh. Keep that seal wet! Even on travel days or when the RV is stored. Otherwise…. 😵‍💫

A couple of things I have found is when you buy your TP look for single ply. Now about traveling with your black and grey water tanks. Do not travel with them even 1/4 full. After having a black water tank break I called the manufacturer of all these tanks. Grey water black water it does not matter every manufacturer does not install these tanks as per manufacturer instructions. Now with the vent solidly mounted to the tank, these tanks are just set into angle iron on the outer edge. Any amount of weight in the tank causes the tank to flex and over time the tank will crack either along the edge where mounted on the angle iron or around the area the vent has been mounted. Here is what the RV manufactures are not doing and have not in forever. There are supposed to be straps mounted to hold the bottom of the tank up reducing the flexing that causes the failure. The other thing that happens many more times than not. The hole saw used to drill out the hole for the vent pipe falls into the bottom of the tank. If your tank seems to drain slow there is a good chance that the plug from drilling is in the tank causing the tank not to drain properly. Replacing a black water tank is a royal pain in the bottom. I have had to do it and it is the most unpleasant thing I have ever experienced.

We use charmin ultra soft for our RV. It performed the water test better than most rv specific toilet papers, it costs less, and it feels a whole lot better on the booty! The ultra strong does not perform the same. It has to be the ultra soft.

One item we've encountered twice (different RV's) is toilet valves that will stick allowing water to continue running into the bowl. Very bad situation since there's not an overflow drain. We've been lucky to catch it before filling the tank and water running onto the floor. Related to this, we turn the water supply off at the pedestal if we're leaving for a period of time in case a faucet decides to drip. Again, it's just a precautionary approach.

That's a good cautionary approach!

Holy cr*p! Number 10...I was laughing at that one! I thought I was the only one that knew how that springy thing worked. It's not a toilet paper SHELF either! Reminds me of my Dad and his pet peeve the toothpaste cap. I dump both black and grey before we head out, then add a few gallons to each tank then add about 1/2 cup of liquid dishwasher detergent to both tanks and let the water sloshing clean the tanks. Never had an issue with pyramids or odors. Cheers!

Although you recorded these tips a year ago, I watched it again and then sent it to my son who just asked me. "How do these RV tank systems work...." Yes, the last tip was most important, yet the "which way to face the roll" debate continues. It made me laugh.

Here's a tip. Invent an acoustic transducer that lays on the bottom of the black water tank. Get your agitation from that. Think something like a subwoofer, but smaller and milder in output. That would be a great experiment to film. Try subsonic frequencies to ultrasound and see which frequencies break up the poo pyramids the best. That would be a supreme video and could be done in a garage with clear plexiglas tanks and peanut butter. :)

I don't have an RV, but I did enjoy your video, you brought a not so pleasant subject to listen and you made it to be very interesting and presented with lots of class, I took some note to use in my toilets at home. About the toilette paper, I think that the European and many other countries around the World do not throw any toilette paper on the toilet bowl, but throw it in a separate bag/basket dispose of it in the trash, i.e., plastic bag close it by tightening a know and then throw it in the trash bin, so there is nothing to flush other than "merda" ...

Remembering our 1st nomadic life (lol) 2 of us ,occasional guests +dog - it were little different in our no slide outs Coronado ,or our Southwind ,both class A ,we try our late parent's class C and it was fun ,but so happened we got great ,once in a lifetime deal from a friend ,whose love their bus ,don't want to sell to strangers -they had emotional attachment to it ,but wife decide ,her husband would be better not on a road - We All were HAPPY CAMPERS ! The toilet - we did the ice treatments ,we did the toilet paper ,have to buy something thin 1 ply for layering and normal that we didn't flush ,plus baby wipes -btw THE DIAPER PAL ,OR DIAPER GENIE -WORK GREAT FOR THAT TYPE OF WASTE ,our dog had pads too ,for emergencies and rainy days -great solution. I think it was home made deluted some cleaning solution with deluded Dawn (dishwasher liquid and dishwashers pods) ,plus somewhere i had recipe of herb mix to add once in a while -its bay leaves and something else crumbled . Thanks for tip with toilet change -really ,lol why to put marble counters and not the normal toilet/adapted design. Thanks !

You can MAKE poopourri. Take bottle, put essential oil you want in bottle (few drops or a little more if you want it strong) water, and a drop of dawn dish soap (stops oil from separating). Done. Spray toilet, oil covers the top and shit usually sinks and the oil traps the smell. Floaters will break the seal

Never heard "leave your grey tank open". Keeping the grey tank closed, building up some water, gives you a consistent back-up wash. Invariably for us our grey tank is full or nearly full whenever the black tank needs a dumping, so we run the black tank, followed by the grey. it does a great job of flushing any black tank residuals out of the hose as well, which makes disconnecting a less uncomfortable experience. Like the ice-in-the-black-tank trick! I'm thinking we might do that as we leave a campsite to head home - most campsites we go to offer bags of ice, so adding some ice would be an easy way to make that post-trip flush that much easier.

We have a washer/dryer and family of 4 showering, etc. if we left our gray tank closed it would back up I less than 24 hours. It’s totally fine to leave open if needed. Thanks for watching
