I don't think anyone hates Garp, but similarly no one is defending Garp as a good parent, at the end of the day his parenting is what lead to him living with regrets, having to see his grandsons become pirates, and living stranded from his Son who became the most wanted man in the world

Garp is honestly, that one pillar of the marines that still can give bright eyed impressionable youths (like Koby) that idealistic "Hero" dream that inspired them to join the Marines in the first place without having the concept be completely swallowed by the WG's corruption.

I really wonder how Luffy feels about Garp. Their last interaction was the punch at Marineford, which was immediately followed by the death of Luffy's brother at the hands of the Marines-with Garp present. In the 10+ years since Marineford we haven't had even a panel of Luffy thinking about or mentioning Garp. We genuinely do not know how Luffy feels about Garp or his dilemma. It'd be interesting to see how he feels about him and how they will interact if they ever see each other again

I think Luffy still loves Garp all the same. He and Garp have a lot in common even their values about freedom. Garp despite not liking Luffy being a pirate fundamentally respects his choice and lets him live his life, consequences and all. Luffy's the same but it still hurts to be on opposite sides unless it's in private. He and Ace long ago acknowledged they'd have to fight Garp to keep their dreams (not to such tragedy but it was still their choices that lead to that outcome.)

The picture of Garp doesn’t only indicate his personality mirrors Luffy; young Garp carrying the rod as a child while on a tiger also suggests his upbringing was similar to that of Luffy’s too. We know Luffy, Ace, and Sabo used to all carry a similar rod to the one Garp has on their adventures, and part of Luffy’s trials as a child was the struggle to survive and overcome the wilderness.

Oda actually portrays the generational gap between the Monkey D. family so well. Garp being the conservative grandad who even though possesses some black & white world views he still has a good heart, Dragon who, whilst being a revolutionary, approaches it in a very methodical fashion and only hates the celestial dragons and not the kings who stand below them and then lastly Luffy being Gen Z doing whatever the hell he wants.

One thing people often overlook is that Garp is friends with and mentored countless marines over the span of decades, the marines at Marineford were his nakama, so while Ace was family, Ace's nakama were attacking his, which only added to his inner turmoil. I think a lot of people shift the blame on Garp, but Ace's stubborness lead to his demise, because he underestimated Blackbeard.

The problem with Garp is that many readers are quite simply too young to understand his perspective. Which is not a diss, his dilemmas are things adults encounter in later life. For example, you can't just tell a father or mother who is working a low paid job to quit it and open a business. They have a responsibility for their families. So, they need to make difficult decisions which upon a superficial glance seem stupid. Naturally most teens and young adults won't be able to relate to such a perspective. Garp is one of the parental figures of the show and those in my opinion are notoriously misunderstood. In fact, here's a hot take: The reason so many people love Whitebeard is because we all can relate to having (or at worst wanting) a good loving father. Extremely few people talk about his perspective of wanting to be the parent, growing your own family, etc. It's always the perspective of wanting to have a parent like him. The one and only person I ever saw relating to his role as a parent was Merphy Napier who sees herself as a similar sort of mother figure for her friends (according to herself). At least among the typical well known One Piece youtubers.
@ReiseLukas

This is why One Piece isn't technically just for Young Men (Shonen) it's for all ages. There's always more to learn within One Piece and as one grows up and has a family, they can look back at this story and find more things to understand
@Abdullah-uh4eu
@Abdullah-uh4eu Жыл бұрын
I think you also forgot to mention that Merphy herself was in the process of adopting a child when she read about Whitebeard, so it cuts even deeper for her. Whitebeard is not only a character, but an ideal of what Merphy herself wants to be for her adoptive child.
@DunklerZebralord
@DunklerZebralord Жыл бұрын
@@Abdullah-uh4eu Yes, that's absolutely true. And that just further proves my point because obviously, what teen or young adult can relate to wanting to adopt a child or having adopted children? Naturally for someone in that position, the character Whitebeard is gonna be way different. I can't imagine how deep that must cut, reading about WB while being in the midst of the process yourself.

Just because he had a moral dilemma doesn’t make him the best written character bro lol. Garp has been in less than 30 chapters of the almost 1100 chapter series. It’s impossible for him to be the best written character when there are dozens with much more exposition and fleshing out. I love Garp, I just think that take is beyond a stretch considering characters like Sanji are much more fleshed out and better written in my opinion. Buggy has more screen time, exposition, and understanding than Garp has had in the series. Let that sink in.

Sengoku not to be underestimated..we don't know if it would have change anything and ace choose to die on his own terms protecting Luffy and defending whitebeard name by taking akainu bait. None of it was garp fault. I never blamed garp and love him as a character. I do however understand why dadan beat his ass lol. That was a mom losing her child. Garp is one of those characters I've been fascinated to learn more about. His goofy antics are great but you can tell there's a ton of history, given his relation to Roger, Xebec and the World Government at large. For example, a part of me theorizes that the reason why Garp was so hard on Luffy and Ace was because Dragon was a former Marine, and him leaving and forming the Revolutionary Army made him want the two to stay in the Marines as a means to prevent them from suffering. Though, you could make the argument that Ace and Luffy's lineages would always haunt them. All in all, my theorizing aside, I look forward to learn more about the Hero of the Marines.

Garp’s ultimatum of having to choose between Garp: the Hero of the Marines and Garp: the Grandfather of Ace and Luffy is probably what made Luffy so against the idea of being seen as a “hero” by the people he helps. Luffy had to watch helplessly as one of the only other people who loved Ace as much as he did was made to help put him to death. Garp was forced to choose between his responsibility as the Hero and his love for Ace, and in the end he wound up not being able to fight on either side because of this gridlock.

Reason why Garp didn't save Ace because he isn't only a Marine officer but he is the face of Marine, he is The Hero He is Superman of One Piece world In Op world 95% of people don't know that WB and Ace are good person, they're Pirates and 99% of Pirates are evil

one of the scenes in MF that send chills down my spine everytime i think about it even till this day is when Garp confronted Luffy just before he reaches Ace. like you said, that was the defying moment for Garp's entire internal struggle that he has been dealing with throughout the whole saga, his sense of duty, justice, and the responsibility he carries on his shoulder as the greatest pillar of hope for the marines, versus his father's heart. standing before him and behind him are the 2 people he loves the most in this world, his 2 grandsons, then we see a quick panel of him from behind showing the marine coat he is wearing with "Justice" written on it, symbolizing again the tremendous weight he is carrying as the Great Marine Hero and what it would mean for him to fail his mission. and at that moment, he must make a choice, obliterate and annihilate this "pirate" in a Strawhat running at him, or letting his grandson through. and the most beautiful part is he was so conflicted, the guilt was weighting down on his heart so much that he couldnt really made a choice in the end, he decided to close his eyes, and let fate do it's thing. and when Ace was saved, he just sit there on the ground, hoping that he made the right choice, only for everything to be snapped away by Akainu. the characterisation, the emotion, everything was so raw and beautifully written. Garp will always be one of my favorite characters in the series thanks to that scene.

One piece is providing very difficult scenarios to think about for younger audiences. The moment i was really challenged by One Piece's message was during fish man arc and the queen died saving a tenryuubito and she kept screaming do not fight. It was so hard for me to accept the message of *true* conviction for human rights and upholding it during that time. Because i personally wanted that Celestia dragon dead. But clearly the queen's vision for the long game is better.

i'm literally in tears for empathising what garp would have had to go through in order to make the decisions that he had to make it was never mentioned in the video but we cannot forget that the entire thing was supposed to be livestreamed and that Garp is literally the hero of the marines what would have happened to all of the innocent people who idolised garp when they saw garp actively helping ace to be free, what would have happened to the trust in the marines when the literal hero of the marines is seen to "switch sides" garp had a responsibility to uphold his actions to the ideal that people are expecting him to be and the fact that he actively made that choice for me only adds to his character and strength

After 1080, it's pretty clear Garp was throwing at Marineford. I think fighting the Whitebeard Pirates, he saw what was at stake for the rest of the world, but in Luffy, he could have his cake and eat it too. He could protect the world as a Marine, and save Ace as a grandfather. He couldn't have asked for a better outcome, at least until Sakazuki showed up.

I always remember when the StrawHats first met Aokiji. A group of civilians ended up on a desert island after their ship was attacked by the Yokozuna frog. Aokiji offers to help and Luffy yells at the civilians not to trust him because he is from the navy, then after a moment he remembers pirates are the bad guys and marines are the good guys and laughs.

It's possibly one of Morj's best videos. I do want to add that Garp getting mad about akainu killing Ace fits perfectly with Garp. It's possible that Ace being killed through execution was scene as a hand of justice. While Akainu killing him was more a personal killing because he was never meant to kill Ace in battle. It's almost like vigilantism. It is very similar to a criminal getting the death penalty through a fair trial as opposed to being killed by the police on the street. One is justice, and the other would be an injustice.

@Bud Lightyear That's one of the things I liked about Marineford the moral dilemma Garp had to face with Ace. It's a case where Garp could not punch his way out. In a way, you could make the argument it was inevitable, fated to happen given Ace's lineage and the choice Ace made. Nuance in stories has always been something I appreciate. The idea that choices aren't so black and white(even in a black and white story) and there are shades of grey. Stories where they encourage people to think rather than telling those how to think I prefer.

All very true. One of the coolest things about one piece is that we follow a very small snapshot - strawhats, red hair, revolutionary. They’re the current generation. 3 of the most notorious organizations in the world, and honestly in history. But we just happen to be following them and know that they’re forces of good. We got a good look at other noble legends like Roger and Whitebeard, we saw what happened to Ace, and we’ve seen plenty of the evil side of the marines. This is all on purpose of course, making it very easy for us to see the marines as the main enemy. But when we look beyond our snapshot and view the world as a whole, most people see the complete opposite and for very good reason. Most people aren’t from Ohara, most people don’t know who luffy or shanks are outside of their bounty pictures. Most people have their lives threatened or ruined by pirates and are saved by the Garps and Kobys. And that matters, it’s not like they’re just living some lie. That’s the real truth of the world, even though the government is hiding serious stuff it’s not like people are being brainwashed. The marines really are largely a force of good fighting a force of evil, while also protecting a force of evil. It’s all very complex

Thank you for making this video Morj. I've always said, IMO, Pops was the selfish one in this conflict. Garp made the opposite of a selfish choice by choosing the safety of countless innocents over his own urge to save his child's life, while Pops threw away the safety of the civilians living in his empire to fight a battle he **knew** himself and most of his army wouldn't come back from just to safe his child. Even if Ace did get rescued, it was still a very bad choice to go to war like that. The very reason none of the five superpowers go to war with each other (the same reason Pops couldn't save Wano from Kaido) is because win or lose their empire would almost certainly take a blow it will never recover from. Pops let his emotions and pride overrule his logic and made an awful decision, while Garp had the willpower to make the right decision despite how much it destroyed him.

Some of the best one piece content I’ve seen! I think what’s interesting is the idea of heroism and the comparison between Garp and Luffy. I think Luffy is a hero on a micro level but not a macro level. He doesn’t have any care about society on a macro level, just cares about helping individuals as and when he comes across them. Garp is a hero on a macro level, but not a micro one. He cares about systems that protect the most amount of people possible and rules and order, but in the world of One Piece, there’s a bit of a dilemma there because the only body currently capable of protecting that law and order is tyrannical and that greyness tears him apart a bit.

I think the Garp haters were just completely clueless about his character. Even just a surface-level understanding is enough to get that it's complicated. Honestly, there is nothing in this video that doesn't feel obvious to me, but it still feels like it had to be said. To me, it feels like all the Garp heckling comes from the same place as the "if that was me" bullshit like in the CalebCity sketch. It's just people spitting ignorance about how Garp should have just beaten up all the marines and let Ace go, and then beat up the pirates like Blackbeard trying to take advantage, and then just magically smooth everything over so it's happily ever after.

There is a lot to take in too. It's already enough to have a fresh admiral come in and make their strongest warriors look like jokes, but there is also considering the ancient weapon there, the potential fate of the various members of the beast pirates and what to do with them, training a still inexperienced new shogun, the possible outcome of the two CP0 agents of dubious fate, what happened to X. Drake and Basil Hawkins, Wano is still really messy at the moment to just go out and leave haphazardly.

I think Dragon's words about Luffy perfectly describes it all "A pirate? That's fine too...". Garp was free to choose how he wanted to live his life and what he saw as the best way to do so, being a marine. Dragon chose revolution. Luffy chose being a pirate, as did Ace. In the end, Garp was absolutely heartbroken by Ace's execution, but Ace was free to choose how he would spend his life, and freedom doesn't mean freedom from consequence.
