The author of the original novel on which this movie is based on, Jin Yong/ Gum Yung 金庸 or Louis Cha, just passed away very very recently. I’m from Hong Kong and I can tell you that people of all ages, literally all ages have read his books, which were an incredible blend of martial arts, Chinese history, philosophy and deep characterization. His works were very impactful in the Chinese-speaking world and is well known by many people. Many classical TV series and movies produced in Hong Kong were based on his books as well. I know That Pewds is fond of books, so I’m definitely recommending some of 金庸’s great works: Legend of the Condor Heroes, the return of the condor heroes, and The Smiling, Proud Wanderer. They are definitely worth a read.

The movie is edited badly but the original book is really intriguing so I highly recommend Felix to read it. I couldn’t put it down once I started to read it. The original book belongs to Wuxia category, which is basically the most important genre of Chinese novels, and the author, Jin Yong, is considered the best write of this entire category for generations. He passed away in 2018 just as Stan Lee, and to me he is basically the Chinese version of Stan Lee

I’m Chinese and immediately knew what the finger attack was, and the character by extension based on him sleeping around lol. Most Chinese people are so familiar with this story that there doesn’t need to be a lot of explanation for anything, and the plot is actually very predictable. Using snakes as 暗器 (hidden weapons), 轻功 (the jumping around), and 斗气 (battling chi signified by lasers between two people) are all very common in wuxia, which is a very big and developed genre with its unique elements that are so familiar to a Chinese audience that we don’t give any of this stuff a second thought. What you think makes this film special isn’t all that special except for the editing and the sfx that came from a time period when Hong Kong film first had the technology and tried to use it every way they could. I wish I could see the movie with fresh eyes like you have, but instead see it in the same light as movies you’re frustrated with: too predictable. I’m a little surprised that after watching all that anime, you don’t see any similarities. 轻功 is similar to how they travel distances in Naruto for missions, jumping from tree to tree. The jump cut scenes are just a creative way to represent it without having to film the actual process for older or low budget films. 斗气 is like in certain battles when the chakras of the characters become visible and are pushing against each other. Kishimoto didn’t come up with all that stuff out of nowhere.

天龙八部 = The Battle Wizards... lmao. The Chinese name sounded way more bad ass. Unless I've mistaken, it means 'Sky Dragon Eight Parts'. It's a popular Chinese novel, and this film is a loose adaptation. Love the wacky vfx and Pewd's commentary lol Edit: I learned that 天龙八部 actually means 'Veda, Naga, the eight legions'. It's supposed to be the eight types of immortals in Buddhist mythology. The official translation of 天龙八部, 'Demigods and Semi-Devils', sounds about right.

The overarching theme in the novel is about not being able to obtain your desires. There's 3 main protagonists. The one featured in the movie loves his half sister but doesn't get to end up with her (depends on the version as the author revised the novels a few times). The 2nd protagonist (featured in the new Donnie Yen movie Sakra) also suffers the same. His enemy wants to restore his dynasty and sadly for him all his effort is for nothing. Everything he wants he is denied while the 3 protagonists get all that he wants. The 3rd one, (featured in the 1994 movie the Dragon Chronicles) wants to be a monk or find his parents. He's given everything but.

As a chinese and a book fan of the original novel, I have to explain that the reason why this movie is so confusing is that the director just tried to squeeze a "very very" long story in to a single movie. To get a clear idea of how long the story it is, it was adapted into a tv series with more than 40 episodes, and each episodes is about an hour! So many characters and settings are skipped and most of the plot is totally different from the novel (just imagine what would happen if all Harry Potter series is adapted into a single movie, probably Ginny Weasley won't be in it at all, and Hermione and Ron may die in the last battle... uhm...just to make it more dramatic. ) I think it is really a fan-based movie, people who watch this just can't be more acquainted with those characters and their "weird power", and they are just happy to see their favorite character show up in the movie, regardless of the plot. So I am not sruprise that foreigners will be so confused, even myself is a little bit shocked by the poor CGI and tools, but I think they tried their best at their time. After all, it is fun to see the reaction of foreigners watching wuxia movies, but I still recommend choosing a more recent adaptations if you are interested about them, and you may find the ture amazing parts instead of funny "weird power". Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils is really famous among Chinese, and worth "really" jumping into it to find the deeper meaning in the story.

His former classmate was jealous of him and had him kneecapped. Eventually the dude escapes, joins a rival kingdom and gets revenge by killing his former classmate and altering the balance of power in China. Otherwise I don't see a kneecapping theme popping up a lot in Chinese culture. It was a form of punishment for certain crimes for a period. Chinese movies in the 60s and 70s were often arranged like skits with any weird idea being crammed in to keep the attention of audiences. That developed into more slapstick in the 80s and eventually the industry matured.

In the original book the Yellow Robe Man was in fact the biological father of Tuan Yu (who is mistaken by Felix as Zhengchen, his father), just like the I'm your father plot in Star War.... I'm surprise the film didn't include this, which is the biggest plot twist in the original book
