I’m 54 and I have worked 9 to 5 since 1994. I started working when I was 16. I’m tired, married a man 5 years older. Our goal is when he’s 67/68 and I’m 62/63 we’re done. I wish it was sooner but we want to pay our house off. My only advise is travel along the journey. Waiting till your 65/70 it’s harder to take those long plane flights.

I agree with you on the plane flights. I travelled a lot in my 30's and 40's and while it might not have been the best decision financially to spend the money then, I'm so glad I did the travelling when I was younger.

I got my house 6 years ago (age 21) , house is only in my name, but my bf lives with me (together for 9 years) and I am paying extra to pay the house off in 4 years. It’s not a huge home, and not necessarily my dream home. But I do like our home, and pretty much everything is updated now. 2 bed 1 bath.

Fricken lazies young generation. You need to work for the oldest generation to retire.
@jgg204
@jgg204 2 ай бұрын
The problem is this: The older generations may have had it hard in the beginning too, making entry level wages and not being able to afford fancy electronics or bigger TVs or going out to eat at all etc. But they could afford the rent, utilities, and food and medical care. The stress people are experiencing are from not being able to afford the basic necessities. When you don't have stable housing, when you can't afford food, when you can't afford to go to the doctor, that's when people break down mentally. That is what's going on now
@skaterwig
@skaterwig 2 ай бұрын
You are 100% right and the older generation just likes to say that we are lazy and don’t wanna work. It’s absolute bullshit and if anything we work the same hours if not more. It’s just the fact that they struggled for the first few years we can be doing the job for 5 to 10 years and still struggle because of the inflation rate and the fact that wages are not going up at all. And they tell you to just suck it up and this is meanwhile they offer no possibility for anything better. This is why you have to do research for yourself and learn to go work for yourself or open up some type of business. The older generation believes your life is just to work and suffer and pay your bills and then die. Just buy a house and buy a car and be in debt for 30 years. Pay it off and by the time you’re old enough to retire, your health starts to go and you die.

Just stop. You have no idea what you are talking about. I started working in 1990. $3.80/hr and a one bedroom apartment was $500/mo. "Healthcare" back then was selling your blood plasma so you could afford a couple of weeks worth of Raman noodles. The crime rate was double back then vs now, very high labor force participation rate meaning you had to wait for someone to die to move up, lowest adjusted for inflation wages since the Great Depression, higher interest rates, hard money lending, and on and on and on. That same job today in my area starts at $22/hr and a much nicer one bedroom apartment costs $1400/mo. Punch that in your calculator and tell us who had it worse. Seriously, just stop. We are not even on the same planet as back then.
@skaterwig
@skaterwig 2 ай бұрын
@@KungPowEnterFist lmao first off with 4 minute of research I found your bullshit. Minimum wage was 3.80 in 1990 and median was about 15-16. It’s no one else’s fault besides you that you were working for minimum wage that’s number one. Number two people now a days with and without college degrees entry level are making BARELY 20 dollars an hour. Barely. In may of 2024 average u.s hourly is now 30 dollars ( and that’s AVERAGE after having years on, experience, etc). So let’s get this straight average wage doubled over 34 years but rent TRIPLED and with our current friend Joe Biden every single thing from gas to groceries and insurance has tripled in price. And you mean to tell me I’m a bullshitter? Know your stats and know what you’re talking about. Just because you worked a min wage job back then doesn’t mean it was the avg. And not that I’m and advocate for college but back then you could work and pay your college off. Now? Try paying off 80,000 in student loans working and having bills. It ain’t happening unless it’s over 10-20 years
@jgg204
@jgg204 2 ай бұрын
@@KungPowEnterFist boomers didn't grow up in the 90's. Basic math fails you
@skaterwig
@skaterwig 2 ай бұрын
@@KungPowEnterFist first off with some simple research I debunked your claim. Min wage in 1990 was 3.80 and average over the u.s was 15-16 an hour. So your choice to work for that was your personal choice. Secondly currently the average u.s minimum now is 30 dollars an hour. So over the course of THIRY FOUR YEARS hourly barely doubled and rent has TRIPLED because a one bed is now 1500 and up. Plus groceries and gas and insurance thanks to Biden has skyrocketed due to inflation. You may have made less but the cost of living and everything else was WAY LESS than what we are faced with. Cut the bullshit and stop trying to play the victim like the older generations always do. There are even boomers out there admitting that the younger gen living today has had it harder than everyone. And not that I’m an advocate for college but you guys back in the 80s could work a full-time job and pay off your college. Try doing that in 2024 when most people go to college and their student loan debt is upwards of 50,000. And to be honest, that’s on the low side.

Nobody HAS to! An employer has the option to decide on what terms and conditions they want employees to adhere to but employees don't have to join the company. People work 9-5 jobs in trade for a salary. Many others could decide not to and do something else. Why don't people just admit that they like the salary being offered but don't accept the conditions in place for that salary? you can just opt out and find something else. Places open on Sundays because there's customers/business on that day. The main aim of a business is to make money so why would they close if there's a need and an opportunity to make money? People can find a job that doesn't expect you to work on Sunday.

I quit my job partially for this exact reason!!! Worked in an office for 7 yrs. Loved my job, but after covid hit and jobs started dropping / slowing in 2022, we had way less work. We spent 6 of our 8 hr days just sitting. But because the boss wanted to run around and enjoy life he kept everyone there so he didn't have to be. It was a small business (5 employees), but he took a loss to enjoy life. My coworker spent the day scrolling facebook and talking on her cell phone. Monday and Tues the girl doing payroll had things to do, but the other 3 days she had zero to do. I have side selling business, and it was ok for me to edit and whatever was needed...AS LONG AS THE BOSS DIDNT HAVE TO BE THERE. From where I sit his business was failing. I went from orientations daily, going to companies we worked with several times a month (at minimum 2 days a week), working with upwards of 100+ employees a week to just sitting!!! I couldn't do it! I quit, went to grocery delivery, selling gift baskets / gift sets seasonally, I make cakes and candies for people a few times a month, and am looking for other avenues. My husband makes good money driving truck. I went from $590 a week on 40 hrs bring home to some weeks I make well over $1k doing what I do on about 30-32 hrs a week.

I don't mind working hard. I don't mind having to "eat shit" for a while to achieve my goals. The biggest issue here is that in this economy no matter how hard you work or how much you sacrifice the treadmill keeps moving faster until there is a point where you realize there is no point to it anymore. Grind yourself down to the bone and for what? There is no way forward because the steps that used to be there are just gone. That is why people are giving up because they know that they can give everything and get nothing in return. There is no more end goal to reach and that makes everything feel futile

I feel so bad for many people who work 7 days a week. It's rough, especially with kids. I know of several manufacturers who will work 7 days a week for months (most full time employees request days off and use vacation time just to get a day off). Most who do are working at minimum 12 hr shifts, many swing shifts. One of our local manufacturers has been known to work their employees up to 16 hrs days (the max allowed by law) 7 days a week. I sure ain't built like that. I like to move around. I could warehouse if I could go from place to place and not stand in one spit, but assembly and such, nope. I got to keep moving.

Let's put into the equation that women have to bleed monthly and still go to work. Women still have to carry the baby and work, women still have to think what to cook for the family (not saying men don't, but it's okay). Women were not made to work behind a desk, or in a warehouse, we were made to cater to our homes and our family without worrying about getting up at 7am or 5am to go to work and get paid barely enough, or if it's enough the only thing that motivates you to go is the check, you still will bleed every month and pretend it doesn't matter. I think I would love to be the cook and be the berry gather for the rest of my life...😂😂😂

It’s never a 40 hour work week. It’s an hour and a half into work an hour and a half home which adds three hours per day to your work. That’s an extra 15 hours a week that you are not compensated for on top of that all the preparation time to make your meals and to get ready every day. You can try to seem like the tough Americans that you think you are, but the truth is the truth and if you wanna keep advocating to work 40 hours a week and get absolutely nowhere then fine. People like me want people who work 40 hours a week to have enough money to live to save and to start their own business. But for whatever reason, I’ll never never understand people like you just like to go around calling everybody “wuss”. Before you call me a spoiled snowflake I’m 28 years old and I’ve worked construction for almost 10 years and I was in the Air Force just to let you know. The light bulb went off, because the only people I knew that had freedom from working all the time and could work when they wanted to and could work from home was to trade the stock market. My trading started off pretty rough, because I did not have a mentor. But I finally taught myself how to trade and it was the best business decision I ever made. Well I can say as a GenX that we have “names and definitions” for the way we feel now. “Depression” “Anxiety” all the mental health terms. Nothing wrong with them. Knowledge is power. But I do think the younger generations are quick to label themselves and go down a spiral because they are self diagnosing and we are almost over the top with mental health focus. Okay yes life can be stressful so go drink a beer with a friend or go see a local band or go hike. Stop assuming you have some kindof mental illness all the time. Again definitely think it’s important to consider your mental health but be careful not to label yourself every time life gets a little rough. Gotta get some GRIT! I say screw the 💩 and have a plan to move ahead - get a roommate to help with expenses. I had roommates until I was 28 yrs old! We had a blast. Anyways just my 2cents. It took 45 minutes just to get to work and at least an hour to get home, often more, with the record at an hour and 40 minutes. I had to ask my supervisor to transfer to another location because it became unsustainable. Fortunately, I passed the interview as an internal candidate and got the job. Three 12 hour shifts with one 6 hour shift. Now I have time to go to medical appointments, take care of adult responsibilities, with every other weekend off and only a 15 minute drive to get to work. 1000% glad I made the switch. Maybe they should be a nurse, you get to work 12-16 hours on your feet, you get to work swing shift, you get to work holidays, you get to work holidays…..no lunch, no breaks, usually don’t even have to pee because you haven’t had time to drink anything !!!!

Life in general is tough folks. Who's raising these soft kids? Prepare your children, stop cuddling them.

It’s honestly so scary to read these comments and see how many people are pushing and advocating the 9 to 5 and talking about how great it is and calling everybody else a baby about it

first off with some simple research I debunked your claim. Plus groceries and gas and insurance thanks to the current policy makers in power… has skyrocketed due to inflation. You may have made less but the cost of living and everything else was WAY LESS than what we are faced with. Cut the bs and stop trying to play the victim like the older generations always do.

Thats just a phase a generation has to go through in their early to mid 20s. The 2 hr time shift fks with us for some reason & it takes a few yrs to adjust your life to it. The adjustment is frustrating, but give a little more time, take a deep breath, & you'll be fine.

I don’t think the younger generation is handling it differently then us perse. They’re just louder about it, which is also easy with social media. I felt so lost in my 20s, struggled all the time. Just dealt with it and was miserable. It’s only in the recent few years I’ve changed mentally. I matured and got more experience in life. A lot of people are struggling. And there will always be something else that comes along.

Also when you’re young don’t be so loyal to these companies and institutions you work for - work there for 1-3 yrs and move on if you don’t get promoted or benefits like flexibility. You have your whole lives to work. don’t be too loyal because believe me, these companies aren’t loyal to the workers. they will fire you with a smile if needed. do your best but always have 1 foot out the door by keeping your Linkdin in up to date and be checking Indeed once a week and network.

This is an ongoing problem. People have not been getting paid enough for a very long time. Normally it's people in poverty or right outside of poverty or lower middle class that have these issues. Now that it's happening the way more people it is coming to light. We need better laws so s*** don't get out of hand.

Love how there’s so much of “you think that’s hard try “ *larger work load that you chose to take on*” Not everyone has validation from labor and and it’s never just 40 hours, involuntary overtime, shit job prospects, and it’s ALWAYS older people who grew up in way better circumstances trying to punch down on fledgling adults.

I love working. 60-70-80 per week to provide and treat myself and the kids. I need to manage better. Yes I get tired from time to time but it beats not being able to earn.

So the girl that has the option to move back home, absolutely should. So the job will see that they are not paying their employees enough to stick around because they'll be homeless and working there. Also she can sit back and help her parents with half the bills and she could save money. Her parents can also put more into the retirement plan from saving money by having their kids stay with them. What the hell is wrong with doing that? If I had an option like that I would take it
