Yeah that stuff is marketed towards young men, but we shouldn't underestimate how popular these games are with girls as well. Especially in the West the female Genshin player count is often higher than the male according to Statista in 2022 (maybe only for mobile users though idk). And in 2020, 45% of total Genshin players were female.

As I keep saying, pretty and cute female characters are appealing to both genders, always have been. Western devs used to understand this as well, until they got lost in the DEI sauce. When it comes to Genshin, I right now know 11 people irl who plays it (myself included). 7 are women, out of those 5 are women in their 20s. Funny thing is, with one exception none of these women are gamers otherwise, they don't care about video games in general, but they like Genshin. They picked it up during lockdowns, because free and the advertisement looked cute. They play casually, mostly doing only story content and main, story related events, not bothering with endgame content much (there's a reason Hoyo is very cautious pushing any kind of endgame in Genshin) and pull on characters entirely based on how likeable their personality is or how cute they look.

14:00 - over-detailed? Are people braindead? The PROBLEM stopping many characters in games from ever becoming iconic is that they AREN'T detailed - they're generic. There's nothing that makes them stand out from the others. The male character in this trailer for example. He looks like every other boring anime protagonist, ever. A girl with maybe some rune tattoo on her face, unique hair, an outfit style that makes her quirky and cute, and being associated with some unique weapon you don't get much like maybe an energy sword with a distinctive shape? She might stand out. My rule of thumb is, your character should be recognizable JUST from their silhouette. 99/100 people would recognize Cloud Strife from his. Or Goku - that hair would instantly give it away. Maybe 60/100 would recognize Luffy or Kirby or whatever, as anime and game characters go. Megaman would be easy. Sonic would be easy. But when you look at your run of the mill anime protagonist, most would struggle. What do Goku, Vegeta, Luffy, Naruto, Edward Elric, Mario, Luigi, Sonic, Cloud, Sephiroth, and Samus all have in common? They all have a design that is "simple" yet has specific traits about them that would make them easy to recognize by just their silhouette alone. If your character isn't like that, it's likely to fail. CLOUD: buster sword, spikey hair, shoulder guard, baggy pants - you KNOW it's him. Sonic - noodle legs, giant feet and hands, spikes, shape of the noise - you'd KNOW. Goku - that hair -boom - done. Luffy - the hat and general proportions. Samus, the shape of that suit. But brown-haired generic anime male protagonist? What would give him away? Not much. Indistinct hair, indistinct outffit, indistinct body shape, no iconic accessory. He's forgotten. You NEED to set out to design characters that have specific details that you could, as a casual, pick out of a lineup of silhouettes as belonging to THAT character. If you don't, you will not succeed. The most successful anime have always had these sorts of designs.

Since you went into the anime art style game tangent for a bit I'll give at least 1 big benefit this art style (Cel shading art style specifically would be what this and all these games I'll mention below use) has over say more realistic styles like Skyrim/Monster Hunter/Souls/etc: the anime art style ages very very well and looks as good 10 years later as it did on release in most cases. Prime example of this would be Zelda Windwaker (2001 game), Tales of Veseperia (and most other Tales games tbh), Ni no Kuni 1 and 2, Genshin Impact/other gachas with similar art style, (Honkai Impact 3rd for example, Hoyo's game before GI, is about 8 years old or so now and still looks on par with Genshin/ZZZ/HSR), Dragon Quest games (like 8), and so on. As for this game the premise is kinda interesting as a lot of it is basically anime GTA but with a slightly more interesting sci fi focused main story going on too...unfortunately it's gacha so eventually there's gonna be a point to get people to pay either with back to back 'must have' characters or if not paying then it'll become too much of a time sink to get materials and do limited time events (2 things that annoy me the most in gacha games I've played). Now if a dev took the same anime GTA idea with a more involved main story and made it a single player retail (non gacha) game (granted would probably mean the playable cast would be set to about 4 to 10 characters or so at most but with a larger moveset isntead of dozens fo characters) instead I'd definitely would probably play it...honestly surprised that until this game no Japanese dev attempted something like this with a full on cel shaded anime non gacha game yet...closest to jrpg GTA would be Sega's Yakuza series but it doesn't use the cel shading anime style I mentioned above.

I always describe this as "like minecraft Ender Dragon" where you have an end game, but you can still play afterwards because more content after the game but also competitive ones can just play until the "game ends". Furina from Genshin is actually a great example of how very character-driven these games are for being successful. Over-the-top design, high impact in the story, well voice-acted, and a unique and game-changing ability set. Even if someone personally dislikes a character, that still means the character stands out and will also have others that really like them as well. A character that is rather normal and forgettable design-wise will just lead to apathy, less content from content creators, and less engagement in the game. That is pretty much why I enjoy gacha games so much now, since they are so heavily character driven. Genshin will still remain my favorite though, until another fully open-world fantasy one comes along that surpasses Genshin in the categories I personally care about. I just wish HSR wasn't turn-based. It is my least favorite play style, I just can't play that style and not get frustrated... I wouldn't be able to get past that to really enjoy the game, otherwise I would have started playing that over a year ago. And even despite how off-putting the play style is for me I have still been very tempted to play it just for the single reason of really liking the characters. Been even putting together a playlist of all of the story so I can just sit down and watch it without personally needing to play through the game.
