LUNCH RECIPE:
I threw together a tin of cannellini beans, chopped tomatoes, cucumber, arugula and some mixed salad greens, sliced red onion and later added some tuna. Mixed with some black and white rice, sprinkled with olive oil and lemon juice.
To find the artists on the Stradina, just head down to the beach from Piazza Mulini. Or if coming from the ferries, go up the church steps and it's right there!

Welcome to our life in South Africa. Two to 11 hours per day, sometimes 24hrs, or 6 days without electricity. Every day, every month, for years now. It also affects things like tap water quality and sewage. You learn to adapt, make a plan. Especially those of us who don't have the money for expensive gadgets and solar.

You shouldn't have to adapt, it's the 21st century & countries like South Africa, Columbia, Brazil, Ethiopia etc shouldn't be still living in poverty. When I listen to Harvey Schlanger & Helga Zep-LaRouche discussing how the UN is preventing the "global south" from coming online with the 21st century advancements in technology, its absolutely appalling that countries like GB, France & the US want you to live in abject poverty but expect these countries to pay for carbon taxes. Utterly appalling.

Cape Town viewer and fully agree with Carlo re: grid going down. Keeping water on hand in 5L jugs helps with water turn offs & restrictions here in SA (don't forget large JoJo or water barrels to catch rainwater for the garden). Using small solar lanterns to help with illuminating the night, cooking on gas or braaing over wood & having a gas heater, and a battery-powered fan can be a lifesaver depending on the season. Prayers help with everything else. For keeping up with solar and space weather news, no one is better than Ben Davidson of Suspicious Observers.

Hi Niki and Carlo. Always fabulous to see what you are up to in Positano. Here in South Africa we know exactly what you have been going through without electricity. We average about 8 hours a day without electricity because of loadshedding. After years of inconvenience, we have learned to live with it, but there are days when patience and humor just evaporate. There is always a silver lining and your vlogs make a difference.

We live on a remote farm in Scotland and often get power cuts. During the Beast from the East we were cut off by snow for 4 days, with no power, internet and running out of food for us and our pets. We also ran out of loo roll and coffee!!! I don't know which was worse lol. We did get rescued however. On a happier note I have 6 more pages of A Boatful of Lemons to read and I have loved every page. Bravo Nicki, it was wonderful!!!

I think that it's good sometimes to be reminded of how overly 'plugged-in' we all are, but I do worry about the sick and elderly when it happens. In my childhood the power went off a lot and my mum coped with us 4 kids so admirably but i know it was often hard too. Glad i have those memories to draw on as a child born in the 1950’s when we made our own fun. Mum draped wet sheets on the doors to create a cooling affect on hot nights and we kids slept out under the stars! Fun!!

Despite your power outage, I envy picking your own apricots! Living in the woods, we have lost power in the past from trees falling on the lines. We finally got a generator to fill in when that happens. But long outages are frightening and make you realize how dependent we are on these things.

Blocking the doors and windows with heavy curtains helps keep some heat out. A dugout cellar of sorts. And pinch of sea salt in water each day to make sure electrolytes stay balanced. 😊

Long ago, when I was in Girl Scouts, we were given the challenge to work together to prepare a meal without electricity. Since then there have been times when I appreciated that introduction to preparing food or just functioning for a day or two without electricity. Fortunately I have not needed to use these skills for prolonged periods as a way of life, as many do. But living simply so others can live does seem to be the mantra that is increasingly more relevant to a greater array of populations, not only those who are not connected to the electrical grid.

After Hurricane Sandy we had no power for 10 days. Awful experience but at least we still had a house and actually had places to go and shower and eat. I used to heat a big pan of water on the bbq and would give myself a sponge bath. Made my coffee on that too. Better than nothing I guess. We lost food in two freezers and eventually our kitchen refrigerator blew out because the electricity went on and off so many times during transmission repairs. At least it happened in October not August so it was cool enough to sleep.

get some good solar lights to put around your yard. If you lose power at least you will have lights. You can bring the solar lights inside at night for light if needed. I use to make fun of preppers. Now I would say I am a half prepper. I have a generator, 2 solar panels, and solar lights. I also keep several gallons of clean drinking water in containers just in case they may be needed. Get a small space heater. In case you lose power when it is cold the space heater will keep a small room warm. We can power the space heater from the battery pack which the solar panel charges.

Here in the south in the USA we have been without power for 11 days after a hurricane. You learn to adapt. It's not fun when it's hot. But you figure things out as you go and the next time is a little easier.

How wonderful the outage did not last tooo long. I went through one for five days and it was not nice, especially in the country with no gas/petrol available. LOVE to meet various people around town. Agree on make preparations for electrical outages. A few years ago TX had a freak winter storm that dumped alot of snow & the power went out for many & heaters weren’t working & then the pipes froze & busted causing water damage to homes. My elderly mom lost power & was starting to get cold even wearing a heavy winter coat. My sister luckily did have power & was able to get my mom. So yes we need to prep. Best thing is to keep a positive mindset & help each other.😊

Grew up not worrying about our power. All the lines were underground. Never had a blackout.Moved to an old house in the country, in PA. If the wind blows in the wrong direction the power goes out. Here’s the kicker, no water either, we use well water so no pump. Ugh! Sandy was bad 10 days. After that a lot of people bought generators. Oct. so no heatwave. There was one in 2003 I think that was brutal, 4 days in August. I showered at the pool club. They had power but the water in the pools was so warm ugh. We had the grill & ate out but the sleeping w/o AC is gross. Played lots of cards 😊

Here on the Texas Gulf coast we have experienced almost 2 months of 100 degrees temps as high pressure has settled in. We pray everyday that we have electricity!!!! To live here in this heat, AC is a must. I've lived here all my life and when I was young we didn't have AC but it would be very difficult living without it now. Hopefully your electricity will stay on!!!

A couple of things I learned, is always keep your freezer full. Either food or water in a jug. Full freezer last longer. Storage some drinking water. Board games are good, as well as hobbies.

I live in Northern California. Power outages because of storm or fire happen every year. The longest we endured was 2 weeks. You learn to be creative and it's nice when the grid goes down, the silence is golden. I truly loved the segment about the local artisans. We were out of power for a month after hurricane Ian. You use solar lanterns,generator (which we ran out of gas and had to find gas for our car and grill. You can’t siphon from cars nowadays. Very challenging. Plus living with fallen ceilings. Only good thing it wasn’t humid. Did get reading and crocheting done.

Hello from Cape Cod , Massachusetts, USA….we lose power every winter during Nor’Easters- Blizzards, we have oil lamps, a generator, pellet stove. It only lasts a few days at most, but with the generator we do very well, cooking, heating etc. we plug in refers, freezers etc to generator and use grill and electric frypan to cook. It all works out plugging and unplugging this that and the other. I love your videos and your lifestyle, the dogs and the family. 👍🏻💞

Living in Florida, we are prone to hurricanes almost every year. We have been without power for over TWO WEEKS in the past!!! It's a nightmare as you can imagine. I prepare by keeping plenty of water on hand (freezing some of it) and all kinds of canned foods and other staples that can be eaten without necessarily cooking them. It's a way of life here. It's the price we pay for living in Paradise!

We lived in Texas during Hurricane Ike and Winter storms that put out electricity for a week. There was no internet, phone, and electricity. It’s not easy to live without it.

I am grumpy because my wash machine has been out for a week and still have prob two more weeks to get it fixed. Waiting for parts. Not earth shaking, but this posting helped me to appreciate everything else we do have have like electricity. In the summer this wouldn’t be usually to bad but we are plagued by smoke and hot weather caused by the wild fires in Canada. So this year a huge issue if this were to happen. In the winter it would be life threatening as the weather drops to minus 40 to minus 60. So sorry you are going through this. Maybe think about solar power.

Buy a gas generator to keep your fridge going, at least for a few days. Candles and lanterns for light. Keep a transistor radio and extra batteries handy for news and music. Pretend you have to go camping for awhile. Potable water is a must. My mother used to fill the bathtub with water before a big storm just in case it was needed to flush the toilet.

Thank you for this weeks episode, it’s good that you guys are not like in a high-rise building or anything like that, that’s when chaos happens when the electricity goes off. Also, that was very important that you introduced the designers and the sellers and that little alley down in Positano, since I always see sellers all over when I travel, and I never know if it’s stuff that’s coming from China that people are displaying or if they are local. That was very important for your viewers to know that. Love your episodes as always.!!

You could start an etsy store using your platform and share the profits..I haven't read your book but I am excited at this huge acheivement, you should be so proud of yourself as we are of you. I'll skip the current affairs in Israel where I live at thd moment. Past days have been protesters in the heatwaves over terrible judicial overhaul the corrupt government is proposing. We will be having heatwaves these next few days 36°c..and I worry for the kitties who are outside. Im sure they know to find shade and eat at night but its still hard on them😢❤. My family live in an area where power black outs & brown outs are common due to higher than usual temperatures and increased demand overpowering the power grid. The first year we lost the contents of our fridge & freezer so we purchased a small back-up generator with enough power to maintain the fridge & freezer and to plug in items like our electronic devices - the next year we upgraded to a solar electricity system and we have never looked back. We are in an El Niño period that means three years of intense weather. It’s a good opportunity to plan ahead and to prepare a back-up energy source if you are in a position to do it.

Thanks for another interesting video. We have power outages here in San Diego also, fortunately not very often. I know it’s a huge inconvenience and we always pray that it won’t last too long. It was fun to meet some of the local artisans and see their wares. Nicki I’m always impressed how you whip up delicious meals from things you grow in your garden.

If I lost electricity on a Sunday, I would be completely lost! Sunday is when all my favorite KZbinrs upload all their videos. My family and I could empty the fridge and freezer, take off, and go to my family's camp. We have access to electricity there, but we would also take off and go into the woods for a long walk. Play in the vast field next to your camp. We could walk into town and play and the playground and go to the beach and stay there for hours.

When we moved to New Hampshire I was worried about losing power in the winter, even though it hadn't happened, ever. Mr. B got a generator that can be started without electricity...it runs on a battery and uses gas and you can start it as you would a lawn mower. I have a gas camping stove as well. It's true Carlo, civilized societies are fragile. We're so used to having all of our powered things. Nicki, I'm so glad you went to investigate and I most enjoyed the walk to the waterfall and meeting the artisans. Thank you for another heart felt video. xo Suzi

You might consider investing in a portable power station. I bought a Bluetti last year. Its basically an lithium battery with built in charger and inverter. Can be charged several ways including solar. LOVE it! Also freeze gallon jugs if water to keep in refrigerator when power down and run freezer off power station. Works for me. Love your clogs💝👍🍀
