Russian/Soviet kit and military hardware isn't bad at all, it's what most of Ukraine is using as well, the real problem was Russia not maintaining any of it, vast corruption, insufficent training, and as amramjose said a complete lack of NCO's as much of soviet military makeup was carried over to Russia.
