I never understand professional comedians of all people to complain about "PC culture". Isn't one of the first rules of comedy "No one owes you a laugh"?
@arellajardin8188
@arellajardin8188 4 жыл бұрын
Yes! A laugh isn’t given, it’s earned. Any good comedian knows, if a joke doesn’t land, you change it. Read the room, gauge the reaction, and adjust the act. Whining that people are “too sensitive” or “don’t get it,” is comic stagnation. Unless, you just don’t care if the people laugh or not.
@shadenox8164
@shadenox8164 4 жыл бұрын
@brandon roberts That's basically it, there's a reason why the ones complaining about this stuff are the older comedians like Jerry Seinfeld and Tim Allen. They're attempts at comedy aren't connecting as well and some of their old material has aged poorly but rather then accept that reality and consider how they might improve their routines they're blaming the audience because its easier than improving. And even then there's still people laughing at their rehashed material so its not even like they can't just keep going.
@superiodity
@superiodity 4 жыл бұрын
They don't like heavy restrictions put on what they can/can't joke about. Basically a lot of comedy clubs/events are putting more and more rules in place and it's sucking the comedy out of comedians. It's not that the jokes aren't funny or won't get a laugh, it's more so that places want to appease the 1 or 2 very sensitive people that only go to comedy gigs in order to find an offensive joke to complain about.

On the Tim Allen Last Man Standing thing when you look further into it, it was more than it being “conservative” 1. It aired on ABC but was a Fox production and the contract was up meaning ABC would have to foot the bill. 2. It was attracting the “right” demographic aka young people who will buy shit advertised. This happened in the 70s with the infamous CBS “Rural purge” where CBS pulled “every show with a tree in it” to focus on more provacative shows. The later is kinda stupid especially in the age of streaming but often many popular shows get cancelled because advertisers want that 18-34 demographic
@aiberlane3390
@aiberlane3390 4 жыл бұрын
I thought that was so silly. It's not like the show is even is even offensive to the left. I've only seen a few episodes, and it's just a bit of gentle ribbing of the far left from one character. Only the most extreme SJW types could find offense with it. I can't see the station cancelling it for that reason.
@crescentfreshbret
@crescentfreshbret 4 жыл бұрын
Tim Allen had no reason whatsoever to complain about Last Man Standing getting canceled. The show had been on for six fucking seasons, which is the kind of run that a good many TV shows would dream of having. It could’ve been canceled after one season or even just a few episodes like so many other TV shows (including ones starring people who had previously starred in successful shows), but no- it got six fucking seasons. You had that plus all your Home Improvement and Toy Story success, Tim. If anyone doesn’t need to resort to scapegoating, it’s you. And the only reason you have any of this anyway is because you snitched on your fellow drug dealers. If you hadn’t done that, you’d probably still be in prison. You’d be Tim Dick the cocaine convict, and no one would know who the fuck you were. So get over yourself.

Last Man Standing was an ABC production that ran on Fox. It got cancelled for the same reason as many other successful shows where the production and the broadcaster aren't one and the same, i.e. one party or the other doesn't think they're making enough money off it. It's also been picked up by Fox for additional seasons. It's a complete sham that it was cancelled for political reasons.

Oh yeah. Lest we forget the massive cancel rampage of 2016-17 that fell a LOT of shows because no one was watching friggin' ESPN. Oh no. People can look up sports highlights and scores online! Let's kill any show that's not pulling in all the ratings, but not wisely sell money losing ESPN off to someone else. Last Man Standing didn't offend me because of the politics, it offended me because it's a TERRIBLE show with bad comedy and unlikable, whiny characters. If they were trying to make All in the Family, they failed hard at it.

Net neutrality is about content delivery by service providers, not websites themselves. It's about Comcast saying "we won't deliver content from these groups" or "we'll slow down access to these websites that compete with us." Not about KZbin moderating content within their platform. @arellajardin8188
@arellajardin8188 4 жыл бұрын
It doesn’t. NN is the concept that Internet Service Providers should treat all data neutrally and equally. Meaning, they can’t pick and choose which sources get faster or slower speed (or even block them), and can’t charge different rates be pending on content or source. Example. Comcast can’t add a fee to your bill for using Netflix. Or, being a part of the same parent company that owns MSNBC, they can’t slow or block access to competitors like Fox News. Of course, the current FTC killed NN, and we’ve already seen things like an ISP cripple download speeds for a fire department during fires (and hindering communication between the department and people responding to crisis scenes), and then doubling the price to reinstate the original speeds. Consequence free.

@@JerridFoiles That's incorrect, companies still have to legally decide if they're a platform or a publisher. A platform isn't responsible for what's on it, but can't decide what is or isn't published on it (so long as it's legal), a publisher can pick and choose but *is* responsible for its content because of that. That's still legal fact but currently KZbin picks and chooses which one it is on a whim and is allowed to get away with that. Give it time and they'll get corrected on that.

One thing to keep in mind here is that political, religious, and other ideologically-motivated groups have, and have long had, their lists of categories of what forms of entertainment and information they prefer their fellow believers and the general public to read, watch, and listen to. It ain't a recent phenomenon, nor is it exclusive to the Left or Right. Censorship has also been used by such groups to advance their viewpoints and preferences, and to suppress others. That's nothing new, either, alas. Lastly, here's the thing when one seeks to make a living by one's mouth, pen, or other form of expression, which is that some folks are gonna love it, some are gonna hate it, and some are gonna not give even half a shit about it. It also means that, depending on what one says in one's work, someone's gonna criticise it for one reason or another, even if one's had a long and highly prestigious career in one's art field, and that comes with the territory.

It does not function that way in practice. The culture war is an extremely complex topic. The issue with safe spaces (and free speech zones) is that they entirely defeat the purpose of civil rights and free speech. You should have the right to speak your mind without fear of physical violence or threats regardless of where you are. However I am sorry you feel stuck where you are because of your sexuality. That must be extremely hard. I can further explain my side on this issue in more detail if anyone would like to discuss.

@@herrikudo I believe you may be misunderstanding the point of safe spaces, or perhaps you are seeing something I'm not. The point, at least originally and where I am (both literally and metephorically), is for students or members of an organization to be able to discuss their sexualities or psychological/emotional issues to discuss them with out fear of harassment. Since these are mostly in high schools, where civil rights are restricted as is, universities, which are typically private organizations and thus can enact and enforce there own rules on their grounds, and churches, which are also private organizations and are entitled to the previously aforementioned rules, they really making much of a change. However, I feel that I stand on a different side of this issue than you, and it appears we have different experiences, and I would like for us to continue this discussion by sharing our experiences and where we stand.

@@herrikudo A safe space doesn't run counter to free speech, it is in fact enabled by the free speech of individuals. It's no different than any community that sets it's own rules or guidelines or which practices some kind of moderation. If I go to the NBA subreddit and start a thread about macroeconomics it's going to be removed because that community doesn't allow that discussion within their realm. Effectively, that's all a safe space is. It's a community where the individuals who make up said community have decided that criticism of someones identity is off bounds. You can still do that somewhere else, you just can't do it here. And if we have free speech then that community has to have the freedom to form their community as they see fit.

I say this because lately I've noticed that some people get viscerally angry whenever a critic's offended by a movie or TV show, even if that critic discusses it in a nuanced way. Of course there are also many critics who make bad faith, wildly out of context arguments about a movie being offensive, like your Irishman example. One example of this, for me, is Dave Chapelle's Sticks and Stones. I think Dave Chapelle is hilarious and am going to continue to watch his specials. That said, I also think Dave Chapelle is slightly transphobic. He seems to feel uncomfortable around trans people and his jokes imply that trans people are super weird and kind of gross. People should be able to have a discussion about how and why Dave Chapelle's trans material offends people. However, whenever a critic tries to do that, people interpret what they say in black and white terms, by either deciding Dave Chapelle is a horrible person who should be canceled or the critic is a dumb snowflake and Dave Chapelle can do no wrong. It's super unhealthy - we need to be able to criticize our celebrities for doing or saying jerkish things without deciding they're all terrible people who should be banished from the face of the Earth. tl;dr we need to actually address and discuss the offensive things celebrities say, instead of either 1. deciding they are good and everything they do is good, what are these snowflakes talking about? or 2. deciding they are evil and everything they do is evil (cancel culture).

There's a discussion to be had, but Dennis Prager shouldn't be the one leading it because he's not trustworthy. As the guys picked up, there's some instances where the context was left out and that's the problem. University money is being spent on speakers, so students should have a say in who their tuition goes to support. Should the university provide a local for dissenting voices to speak pro bono? That's another discussion entirely, and again a nuanced one (are they arguing in good faith or are they making bad faith arguments to "own" their audience like Ben Shapiro tends to do?). Except, some of the more recent jokes have not been in good faith. The transgender content took a “eww gross, I’m being tricked” tone. And when he was criticized for it, he doubled down in his next special, and added, “you can’t be offended, I know a transgender person and that makes it ok.” Sure Dave, and “i can’t be racist, I have a black friend” is a genuine retort. Than he took it even further, lumped all criticism together as “cancel culture”, and sympathized (and compares his situation with) Louis CK. Who was accused of (and admitted to) sexual harassment of several women, including a couple accounts of masterbating in front of them. So now, not only is Dave giving himself an excuse not to reflect on the tone of his jokes, but his anger at “cancel culture” is making him take the side of people accused of more serious things than telling an unfunny joke. And honestly, his tone has changed, and I personally don’t think for the better. Same subject matter, but more cynical and permissive. Like, Micheal Jackson. In his early days, his jokes came with a wink and a nudge. He made fun of the absurdity of Jackson, and downplayed the accusations by playing with the idea that Jackson was never convicted, so he might not have done it. Now? The joke is, “child victims of sexual assault should be grateful to be raped by Jackson.” Serious tone change. There’s edgy, then there’s edgelord. I don’t think he should lose his contract, but I don’t find him that funny anymore.

However it wasn't cancelled so much as ABC just didn't renew it for a new season, showrunners and Tim Allen of course were upset by this since the show was apparently still doing well and they wanted to keep going. I've never heard why ABC did that but it could've been any number of reasons really. I personally just got tired of hearing the last man standing fans whine that they were being persecuted or that they were being censored or whatever, most sitcoms are lucky if they make it to 2 seasons there aren't many you see that go on for years like that show did and I think that alone makes some kind of statement that it might not have been due to the shows conservative message. Even individuals *on the left* are among those that are facing this ban hammer, especially when they advocate for BDS against the human rights violations by the nation of Israel (where absolutely nothing is said about Jews but they're called antisemitic without regard to what they actually object to or say because the leadership _happens_ to be Jewish).

As a transgender person, I'm expected to be some extreme left-wing SJW, but I can't hop on that bandwagon. I was always bullied and made fun of growing up, and I developed a thick skin because of it. I'm not justifying bullying, but I am saying that being offended is a choice. This obsession with safe spaces and safe language is making these people look like ultra-sensitive children who can't handle being called a poopy head. There's no strength in that, and there's no sense in demonizing people over "micro-aggressions" or not subscribing to some particular tribal politics. It's a rough world, and we have to fight against injustice and discrimination, but the SJW method is extremely hostile and divisive. I'm glad films like this are being made. Also, if we constantly silence people who are dangerous, problematic, or have opinions and beliefs that can potentially cause problems, then how are we supposed to know what they're up to? How are we supposed to know who to avoid? We can't live our lives hiding in a hole under a rock.

River Laurie At least that’s the point of free speech everyone knows everyone thinks. Just leave you in charge do you want to know I want to speak to themselves and have an accurate to representation of the electorate and your countrymen. All is left otherwise it’s compels beach beautiful shut up people from your own insecurity. There wouldn’t be secret groups or rogue agents if they didn’t feel like they had no choice but to be isolated also put in a corner. politics has been turned into high school Clichés in my opinion.

Good on you for feeling that way. Saying "being offended is a choice" is insensitive and shitty though, and being trans doesn't give you a free pass to say stupid shit and equate everyone's experience to your own.

I am that someone. If someone really needs a safe space, like an actual person with severe mental issues, they make their own safe space. Only over-sensitive college students who have not been properly prepared for the real world demand a safe space to be provided for them.

The difference between you and _Family Guy_ is that you are not funny in a way that demeans people. Like, women, LGBT+ people and people of colour (for example) are not your punchlines.

Right wingers are not de-platforming people and attacking left-wing protests. most of the violence is coming from SJWs on campus. In liberal cities groups like Antifa initiate violence and attack people's free speech, any on left of center is considered a fascist. You are ina bubble. PC culture has gone too far. I haven't see the movie, but you don't seem to be missing any context; Last Man Standing was the second highest rated sitcom on ABC when they cancelled it for nothing other than political reasons.
@arellajardin8188
@arellajardin8188 4 жыл бұрын
Last Man Standing had been dropping in ratings with each season, with the sixth season barely having 27% of its original viewership. Combined with a higher than average production cost, due to the partnership with ABC and Fox, it wasn’t renewed for financial reasons. Fox took over the full production costs, and turned the show into a political statement (successfully, if you believed the story of its cancelation). They used the “prosecution complex” messaging to drum up renewed interest in the show. And it worked, more than doubling ratings between sixth and seventh seasons. Money talks louder than politics. But sometimes, making a thing political can make money.
