I saw a slight variation of this where, if you have 3 spectators, you can ask each of them to pick out their favorite card to start the trick. Other than that the rest of the trick is the same.

@@alidasoo6654 Agreed. One of the problem with 3 of a kind is that the spectator may not recall which suit they did not choose. That is unlikely to happen with three spectators each of whom only has to remember one card.

This is such a fun trick and such great pointers on counting the cards by pushing over three at a time like that. This tip will help me polish this up! Thanks! One thing I have always done is once I gather all the piles up, I push off the top 4 cards and place them on the bottom. That mathematically some how fixes the need to have to switch to face down first halfway through the trick so you can just always do face up first. Also I prefer to do this one with 3 participants and the cards they pick can be pulled randomly or I do like to ask to have them each just pull out one they can easily remember as I fan the cards face up towards them and push through cards. When I’m down to the last 3 cards I say something like “interesting, just 3 left, what if I could now hand each of you your chosen card back to you face down?” The top card of the pile of 3 will always be the last person that went. The 2nd is the 2nd and the last card goes back to first person. This math blows my mind. Not about understanding how it works but simply being able to preform it right! Hope these thoughts help. Cheers!

You can change the order so that you just do the 15 pile last. (you dump the rest after the 3rd counter since it's already 15)

I think many people might say "STOP" upon seeing the 4th Ace -- just out of reaction (especially if you're dealing fast)... which might lessen the effect (as the effect is heightened when everyone thinks the magician doesn't know what the selected cards were). I think it might be a better idea for them to pull all FOUR of a value, insert three of them as described in the video, and then "hold onto the final card, so they don't forget what the value is". The 4th card could simply be eliminated from the 4th pile of 9, which now becomes the 4th pile of 8 cards. You might have to start the alternating card deal with a face-down card instead of starting with a face-up card, and possibly have to switch up the dealing pattern again... but I think it would be worth it in the end, as there would be no risk of the person accidentally identifying the 4th card in the deal and it would also serve as proof to other spectators who might not have seen the original selection (which also means you can ask the person to not let ANYONE see their selections to add to the mystery). As always, Oscar -- another wonderful video. Thanks for the years of fun and education.

Same concern. I was having the spectator hold the 4th of a kind and subbing a joker into the deck. Better alternative: Spectator holds the 4th of a kind. 1st pile has only 9 cards instead of 10. The 2nd, 3rd & and 4th piles follow the tutorial(15, 15, 9). When dealing through the deck: 1st pass start face up, 2nd pass start face down, 3rd pass start face down, 4th pass start face up. 3 of a kind remain face down at the end.

I agree with the comments saying to remove the 4th like card and use a joker. Most of us here would be fine as a spectator for this one, but the lay person is going to say stop when they see their selected card even with the wrong suit, especially if you’re moving things along at a decent pace. Then it’s awkward because they’ve revealed their choice, something completely unnecessary and it takes away from the trick. It’s far cooler if their selection is removed entirely

Hi there, thank you for your great tricks. I did try this one as per your directions and found that I had to 'deal' up down, then up down, then down up, and finally up down. I am surprised that nobody spotted this. It's a phase issue - we have to get those cards in our chosen pile. Flipping the up down sequence sets things in order. Maybe your 'cut' set in the video set things out of kilter. Nonetheless, it's a great trick - I love these self working tricks: they are all logical and arithmetic.

A cool variation is with your back turned, to have the spec remove any 4 of a kind. Have them sit on any one of the four and do the trick as Owen explained. Spec reveals the single card as you turn over the 3 matching cards. (You must include a single joker in the deck for it to work out).😊
@chrisbaier6252

I was just practicing this (with kings) and was puzzled when the 4th king appeared. I realized I wasn’t paying attention to the suits. So it might be smart to have the spectator to take all 4 (and put one joker in) and the spectator puts the 4th card face down on the table. Or if It’s a kid, replace one of the aces with a joker and tell them to pull out 3 aces. (The trick is good even if you know the card.)
@gerrybarone5434

I came up with a variation on this, that allows you to do 4 of a kind in the exact same fashion. You have the spectator pick out any 4 of a kind (instead of 3). Then sperate the remaining cards as before with two small changes: I make 5 piles, and the last pile is just the top card from the 4th pile (pervious it would have 9 cards but now would be 8 because the spectator has an extra card in their hand.), so now I have 5 piles: 10, 15, 15, 7, 1. Now continue as before, having the spectator place a card onto a pile, and taking any amount from the next pile and placing it on top. When the spectator gets to the 4th pile, I joke well, I guess we'll just put the one on top. Then continue the trick exactly as before. Now, the very last card to flip up will be the 4th Ace. (because the second card in the 4th pile will always be the last card to be flipped face up at the end of the trick)

To add to this if you ask them to bring out four cards and place the fourth card on the first pile of 9 into the 2nd position from the top and when you transfer a random amount of cards, if you ask the spectator to pick a number between 1-6 and then you transfer the next making a combo of 8, so if they choose 5 cards to transfer you would choose 3 cards and then finish the trick the same way, the last card on the face up pile would be the Ace or the fourth card ☺️
