Next would be to verify coil - control from the PCM and the result of that test would dictate the next move. Possiblities for no spark on both towers of a waste spark coil, car still runs but a 2 cylinder misfire... 1.Bad coil 2.open or shorted coil - control wire 3.open or shorted PCM coil driver 4. An input problem (crank sensor with a reluctor issue)

I had just changed the water pump (timing was FUN, lol), radiator, alternator, suspension all around, rack out plus steering kit, cv axles, bearing assemblies all the way around, brake calipers/fresh pads, trans flush/filter, plugs/boots, 4 fresh tires always oil changed full syn every 3k, air filter every 10k, and im sure more I've forgotten. Last month the wife put her 10ft down into the creek. Oh well the frame is bent and with other previous wrecks the body work became the death blow. We picked up a "fresh" (read straight and clean body/frame) black 99 3.4 coupe that doesn't currently run for $500 bucks, and now whats thats left of Gerdy is up on the lift getting stripped out to put on the black one to rights. @ScannerDanner

That is correct. It's simply a secondary winding that is not electrically connected to the primary like conventional coils. So when the primary field collapses and we surge the secondary winding, the generated electron flow finds its return path through the block and other plug and wire.

An open plug or wire on a waste spark coil does have the ability to affect both sides of the circuit, at least in theory. Get yourself 1 of those and try it again with a 14.2 volt power supply which is what the operating voltage of a GM charging system operates at when running as it was when I got bit. Oh and do be sure to let me know if you do it twice. Video it if you dare. This is a poor test at best. You can have weak spark that will still fire off a timing light.

Wouldn't it make sense to swap that coil to another location to make sure it's not a wiring issue?
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 9 ай бұрын
Good question. In this case no, as one side of the same coil is firing, so this confirms the primary side is functioning normally. Also, you can't swap these coils. It's all one assembly (3 coils in one housing)

If both sides don't spark, next step is to check for coil primary control. Good control = bad coil. No control = open wire or PCM driver issue. Or in rare circumstances an input issue (cam/crank)

Or you could just pull the lead off and note that the engine doesn’t change. And does change when you pull the back one. Although if it was really not firing on two cylinders that would have been obvious too.

1.Weak spark can still trigger a timing light, making that test useless for what we are looking for. 2. I'm performing an RPM drop test to ID which cylinder is misfiring, again, something a timing light would be useless for. Watch the full length case study linked in the short!

I answered in the wrong spot. Here you go...

But heres my point if one side of that coil is sparking something is very wrong , that system spark goes out one side of the coil through the lead jumps the plug gap goes through the block jumps the dead cylinder on exhaust back through the other lead back to the other side of the coil , it cant work on one side and not the other !!! It needs a full circuit! If its jumping one one side how is it getting back to coil ???
@ScannerDanner
@ScannerDanner 5 ай бұрын
It has a return path through the housing of the coil. This is actually very common

@@ScannerDanner I assumed it was the style like the 3.8 Buick V6 the coil has 2 high voltage terminals , and no ground on the coil , it goes out one terminal jumps the plug on firing cylinder through the block jumps the plug in its companion cylinder that dead ( on exhaust) back through a lead to the other side of the same coil ! So this one is like old coils ? One side of the high voltage is grounded and the other to a lead .
