honest question about the "no spin" throw. would it be no longer throwing a knife if it was weighted? a screw driver with a light handle and thick or long driver tend to be REALLY easy to throw. it doesnt rotate. and essentially throws like a knife. youd think ice picks would throw the same way but not really. anyways. ive never needed to guide with my finger. i just use stuff with a weighted tip. or is the average screw driver being a throwing dart just too much info for the internet to have?

Fencing masks are pretty tough... they are made to withstand A LOT OF force. A broken blade can kill you and the mask is there to prevent that. A FIE approved fencing mask can take up to 1600N, so it's pretty impressive that they can puncture it with a knife throw.

I loved doing this growing up. Started with screwdrivers, went up to hangers, and eventually did nails and needles. Always loved one upping some guy throwing knives. And yes, it ended up being a great real world skill years later... (facepalm) cleaning up the back room of an apparel store when someone broke a ton of hangers. It was literally faster to throw all the broken hangers than to carry them to the trash bin. The boss came in saw me and the roomie throwing them, and offered to 'catch' them to help. We both kind of looked at one another, turned back to him and said definitively "no." He didn't understand why... so I buried a hanger a foot and a half deep in a pile of cardboard and asked him to leave. LOVE throwing spikes and needles.

I did this with my dad in the garage a few times. At first i tried throwing knives with the spins and flips, and while looking cool, nothing beat getting a solid step forward and letting the knife carry itself deep into the target. Nothing more satisfying then having trouble pulling the knife out after a nice solid 'thunk' Besides, most of the times i tried doing the flips and spins they bounced off or missed. While the no spin is really really great at low ranges. Very consistent. I'd say more consistent then the spins. Way less math, way more power, way more fun.

I recently took up no spin knife throwing and it took me like 3 days before I could get one to stick somewhat consistently. Going off of just KZbin tutorials and a dead tree, and those exact knives they start with. They're like 20 bucks on Amazon for the 3, great for starting. I think the main thing that gave me grief was my hand wanted to tilt so my finger wouldn't follow the spine of the knife as it came out of my hand, so it would come out and like twirl diagonally.

This reminds of the kinds of things I'd do during the boring down times while helping my dad around the house. I'd take screwdrivers or files and try to throw them so they stick in the ground. Got decently well at it, it usually would only take me one or two tries per item to stick them.
