In this week's addition of Topic Tuesday I discuss:
-Why are there no spinning kicks in Taekwondo poomsae?
-Addressing Ramsey Dewey's recent video: "A true martial artist is a fighter, not a good person"
Ramsey Dewey's Video: • A true martial artist ...
Jesse Enkamp's Video: • This Is NOT Karate

Very interesting, Paul. Thanks for the informative response. I had no idea that Savate was an influence on karate! Seems like there is a fair bit of overlap of approach between Savate and Taekwondo with regards to kicking. How much influence do you think Taekkyeon brings to Taekwondo? Is it a broad cultural reference to Korean-ise TKD as an extension of karate, or are there direct applications brought from it to TKD? Ramsay's videos are interesting - but he has a very strong sports emphasis. He seems to want to strip things back to pure sports relevance, at the expense of other things that people may benefit from through martial arts practice. I'd be surprised if Ramsay used poomsae (he was a TKD practitioner) for meditation through movement, for example. Maybe that's part of the beauty of martial arts - there is something there for almost everyone. Thanks again👍

If you look at what martial art written in Chinese charaters which are pronounced as wu shu or wu kung, the wu charater was actual made of two other charaters. These two charaters showed us the original idea of wu that generally known as stop fighting. So wu shu or wu kung really means the art of stop fighting in Chinese. In my opinion that philosophy inflenced Karate a lot because in old days all these Ryu Kyu masters could read Chinese more or less. Korean Taekwondo funders all knew how to read Chinese I guess. So the moral is a great part of the martial arts from that region.

What about Hwa Rang Do? Didn't Tae Kwon Do come from Tang So Do and Hwa Rang Do was the old foundation of all Korean Martial Arts.

Hi Lately I’ve become interested in watching MA movies especially by stars like Donnie Yen and Jackie Chan, and some highlight clips from Bruce Lee. Just wondering who your favorite MA movie star is ? And favorite movie?

I’ve been training for about a decade, and recently have been trying to isolate and train by balance because I find it is lacking. Seeing how I’ve found very few recourses on how I can do that, my question for you is, how do you improve the balance of yourself and of your students?

Kicks are used since humanity is born. Despite the common thought, kicks are very useful in a fight, the middle and high ones too, but they're often used in the wrong way on the street, because many martial artists use them in a sports way. I can say the same for spinning kicks, or punches also. In savate, many spinning techniques are used after other techniques, just like a combo. Kicks have many advantages compared with punches but there's a demonisation from the side of the self defense circles.

Could you suggest any drills to help me stop telegraphing spinning kicks during sparring. I am looking at possibly doing an AAU competition and this would be helpful. Thank you.

Yes, but doesn't karate came from kung fu, and doesn't kung fu have kicks. But doesn't Korea has another martial art teakkyon, teakkyon is older than karate, and maybe it influence teakwondo.

Most of the Chinese systems that influenced karate are southern systems, which feature very little kicking. It would be interesting if some northern systems made kicking contributions, but I have found no evidence for it. It’s an interesting question. We don’t really know much about Taekkyon, what you see today is largely a recreation of what people imagine it might have been. No evidence has ever been supplied for linking Taekkyon to Taekwondo.
