this video explains how to use the voltage gauge in your dashboard to know the condition of the battery especially when you have a no start condition it is in the place of a multimeter you can use this to see the proper voltage we should be around 12 volts if it's 10.5 volts you need to get a boost,

Joe i have a 98 chevrolet silverado 5.7 crank no start - I already change the fil pomp - ckp sensor - Distribuidor cap and rotor - and yeast wont start.

What if it stabilizes just over 14v? (15/16 maybe) Just got a new O2 sensor put in and voltage sits just a bit over 14 now, which wasn't the case before the replacement. Also, thanks for taking the time to share this!

That's okay usually it'll be around 14.3 14.6 that's okay as long as it doesn't overcharge or undercharge

Great video! my problem is my gauge is going past 14 to the next bar, would that be 17. so it is overcharging. my gauge needle will end up in at 14 but sometimes goes down to 10 then back again to 16 and then to 14 evencucally. what do you bad alternator?

Will guage fluxuate when driving, 12.5 then up to 14v. 2017 rs camaro. Batteru check indicated good but nedded charging, the car sits alot

I got an old 93 p30 Chevy motorhome that won't start. It's got all new batteries (three of them) and it just clicks when I turn the key. The voltmeter on the dash is reading 10-10.5 and I'm not sure if I wired them correctly considering there are three batteries. Could that play a role in the no start? both auxiliary batteries connected and are 6v each

If each battery is 12 volts they are supposed to be connected in parallel reason being you want more current if each battery is 6 volts they are supposed to be connected in series because you want More voltage equal 12 volts

My car reads 11.6-11.8 volts but still starts fine. It shows this in the mornings after my car sits for 12 hours. How manys volts is to low after the car has been sitting overnight? I drive a 2018 Cruze and it has an AGM battery.

You're looking for around 13.6 to 14.5 whether it's been sitting or not sometimes the belt is loose but then you would be relying on your battery try putting all the lights on and accessories and putting the RPM to 2000 see if it goes up sounds like a regulator

@@Joeelectronicschematicsforauto The 11.6-11.8 reading is when I turn my key to the on position but after it starts it will charge between 14.2-14.8. Is the 11.6 reading normal when the key is turned to the on position but the vehicle hasn't started?

@@markjou9799 if the engine is not cranking that means the alternator is not being activated by the belt if you are in the on position then you'll read 12 volts because engine is not being engaged once the engine is being engaged alternator is turning then you should have 14 volts

What if you have a dead battery then jump it and the needle goes past 19?

Also, what is the logic of the gauge numbers. 0 redline - 14 center - 19 redline..

That's just like the RPM that tells you the voltage when it is in the red zone it is being overcharged you want obviously your alternator to be in the 14 volt range now this depends on if there is a compensator associated with the alternator I might be a little high on a cold day and I might come down

Horrible! Why didn’t start the car to see if the dash needle on the battery would show that the alternator was charging the battery or not?🤯🥵

What if when I start my car it's at about the 14-15 range but when I drive even just for a little bit, it slowly goes down to the 13 range and when I park and leave the car for the next day, it's back up to the 14-15 range. Is that still considered normal or is there a bigger issue at play? Also thank you for this video it did answer some of my questions!

Some cars have Smart alternators where they only increase the voltage when accessories are on and when you don't have accessories the voltage goes down that's enough to put a strain on the battery the most important thing is once it's at 14 volts should stay at 40-volt will you put all the accessories on if it's the old Star alternator old style now put on the accessories and see if the voltage stays the same that's the first thing I got back to me then get back to me

good stuff, hmm , seems like i am ok . but - I noticed the needle go below 13 while driving long distance. Does that point to the alternator or could be a connection.

my '02 S10 cut out while i was driving today (i had been mobile for a good 20 minutes), and it wouldn't start fully. when it cut out, the battery light came on and the gauge is about halfway between 9 and 14 on the gauge. at first, the truck would just BARELY start, but it was weak and would not keep running. tried it a few hours later, and it only tries to start. thoughts?

Sounds like your alternator kicked out and you were left with the reserve capacity charge on the battery which you couldn't start it's not a week battery but you have to first charge the battery and then measure the voltages and the current out of the alternator at $2,000 RPM with all accessories on

If there's no check engine light or anything like that also it could be a loose belt although alternator or a pay attention or bad tensioner

@@Joeelectronicschematicsforauto turns out the issue with my truck was the fuel pump, which was a $245 part. It was either that price, or less than half of that for the cheapest one. Just wondering if buying the more expensive one will be worth it.

@@toddinthemiddle it depends if you want to spend more money on a high mileage car and how much mileage you think you can get out of it if it's $100,000 miles and it's only the first fuel pump that was changed that you know of I would go with the more expensive one these are electrical fuel pumps
