Check the dentent spring in the transmission. Those usually wear out and cause popping. $20-$30 fix; if it still happens, you have synchro issues.

Isn't pop out caused by a worn pilot bearing or synchros? That wouldn't be hard to repair. you'd just have to tear into the transmission

Usually. He's going to have it completely rebuilt and then probably the same with the new one

The sycro kits with the bearings are a great option. Replacing the bearings is a good choice if in there. I have a bad input shaft bearing in my YS1. The thing to note on that is there is shaft tolerance specification. Check the width of your old bearings vs new. If same, no issue. If different, take to a machine shop or trans shop to have them check the tolerance.
