Someone needs to clarify something for me. They look through, what Columbo says, “all the unsold photographs from yesterday.” When they don’t find Leslie Nielsen, he asks, “What about the photographs you DIDN’T sell?” Didn’t they JUST look at them? Personally I think Falk blew the line but Barbara just rolled with it. Either way, it’s one of my all time favorite scenes. Well, at least tied with about 30 others.
@StormKidProductions2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I imagine the line was "the photographs you DID sell"
@JustWasted3HoursHere2 жыл бұрын
Also, the second time through the photos, weren't they supposed to be looking at negatives? Those definitely were not negatives! But yeah, Falk embodied that character and I think you're right about him blowing the line.
@Maninawig2 жыл бұрын
No, it is a legal matter. Remember that in two party concent states, she would need to ask to take someone's picture before she does it, making her method an illegal invasion of privacy. What Columbo was slyly getting at was "OK, we went through all the pictures you had a legal right to take, now let's take a look at the candid shots you weren't supposed to take." It was a question of trust to show that he wasn't going to bust them. He used the same trick with the shooting gallery guy, expressing how he couldn't shoot the water from the dock as a way to destroy any leverage he might have had to collect a bribe. In both cases, he showed his experience dealing with carnivals as a police officer, but that he isn't a corrupt cop wanting to throw his weight around (for bribes or info)
@JustWasted3HoursHere2 жыл бұрын
@@Maninawig Interesting, though I thought taking pictures in a public area was more broadly allowed, like if a celebrity is walking through the mall a person can take pictures of them without their permission as long as they don't interfere, etc.
@Maninawig2 жыл бұрын
@@JustWasted3HoursHere there are three things at play: taking pictures of scenery is OK even if you catch someone in them. Taking a picture of a celebrity is OK as they are a public figure. However, purposely taking a picture of a random person is where people will get in trouble. In this case, her job is to literally take pictures of random people and try to sell them, which is an invasion of privacy that can be escalated to extortion as the contract/permission should come first. If you are interested, had Columbo needed to use one of the candid pictures in court, he would most likely claim "it was a misfire" as if her subject sneezed. There is no law against missing your shot with a camera.

The amusement park was "The Pike" in Long Beach, California. It was demolished four years after this Columbo episode was filmed there. It was also used as a setting in dozens of movies and TV shows starting before 1920. "Just one more thing" about this episode is that it has the inimitable Vito Scotti as "Salvatore De Fonte." He displays his extraordinary talent here just as he does in the five other Columbo episodes in which he appears. Peter Falk and Patrick McGoohan were very close friends and, I think, neighbors for a long time. McGoohan appeared in four Columbo episodes, two of which were part of the series' original run (like this episode.)

It’s so hard for me not to laugh at everything Leslie Nielsen does after Airplane

True story, but that part almost went to Christopher Lee. Lee was unavailable due to already working on '1941', so they got Leslie Nielsen for the role.

Just don't call him Shirley.

I'm quite the opposite. I never warmed up to his comedic roles. I much prefer him in his dramatic roles, including this and another Columbo episode and the movies, "Forbidden Planet", and "The Poseiden Adventure."

Columbo got lucky that there was a photographer taking pictures of people visiting the amusement park. Is that a normal practice for peoples pictures to be taken at random in amusement parks in America, or just a story writers plot device so Columbo can get the evidence he requires?

Love Columbo's acting, writing & directing. ... But somebody dropped the ball on sound for this scene. Bad ADR, followed by a 'woosh' as he sweeps his arm. 6:44

The actress who played Joyce in this scene is not even mentioned in the closing credits which is unbelievable..

I haven't verified it, but an earlier post said she was in the opening credits. Barbara Rhoades was already a well established actress when it was filmed.

@@jedgar63 I looked in the opening credits but didn't see it there either (although that was a while ago). I could of missed it but I doubt it. I have the entire Columbo box set and will dig it up sometime and check it again..

@@robertwheatley9153 I just watched the opening credits. She is in the second group after Leslie Nielsen, with Vito Scotti.

Buy them as a package. They are fairly cheap as boxed sets. The copyright owner is still making money from Columbo episodes after 35 years.

It feels so real that's it's almost funny that nobody seem to be recognising Leslie Nielsen on the picture ;)
