He is clear and concise and absolutely knows what he is talking about. He even messaged back and forth with me to clear up a couple of questions I had. The absolute best well videos on the internet!

@@terrybalentine4117 no need for ground. Pump is metal in the water deep in the ground. Green wires never existed until 1995 on pumps. It only helps for lightning strikes. & even then the pump will melt internally. Can't handle the 1.21 Gigawatts lol

I had a quick question for you. I was taking a shower started to lose water pressure. It was storming out side, took off the cover of the pressure switch, the contacts were closed and it sounded like the pump was running. I pulled back the contacts thinking they would maybe stay open, but when I let them go they stated closed with the pump engaged. I didn't want to burn the pump so I disconnected the switch for the switch which shut off everything. Have any idea's what or why I was getting no pressure on the switch and no water. I can't check it until morning, hopefully the rain and lighting will stop. This all started after the lighting hit and shut of the house power twice rapidly. God bless, Raymond

My water was out this morning so I saw your video and went to investigate and found that ants had made a little colony inside the pressure switch cover and dirt, etc was preventing the switch from closing. So I turned off the power to the well and used a can of air spray to blow everything out and used some sandpaper to clean off the contacts and thank the Lord I have water again.

I flipped the breaker off for my pump, took a piece of fine sand paper and cleaned the build up on the contacts (black ? carbon looking). It worked. My pump is still running and it's been over a month.

This was my problem. Pressure tank was low on pressure (23PSI). It felt light so it wasn't flooded. I pumped it back up to 28PSI then checked my pressure regulator exactly as you showed and it worked. My contacts were open. I closed them and the pump kicked on. My son -in -law just called me . It is Christmas morning . He lives about 30 miles from me. His water stopped in his well system and asked me what to do . I suggested check the breaker , tap on the cover of the pressure switch , then cut the power and check the pressure switch . He had it replaced in January , 2021. He said it looks good . I then checked your site and I am extremely impressed. I knew most of what you have described, but you have it explained in great detail which is excellent. I am going to see your video to him . Man , for what its worth, i want to say thanks for all your efforts in making these videos. We lost our house in flood and our pumphouse and bladder tank was broken off and washed down river to who knows where. Everything else is still here and hopefully still operated properly. Unfortunately we have been toting water for all our needs for 2 years now from about ½ mile using a handcart. Honestly i have been a little overwhelmed due to my lack of knowledge/experience with wells, and otherwise should have been able to get our well up and running along time ago. My Dad taught me how to work on pretty much EVERYTHING ELSE under the sun but unfortunately I lost my dad right at 2 years sgo too. With all this said its thanks to your videos that I now feel confident enough and have a much better understanding of the workings and functionality of our deepwell. per another video from someone else I luckily had a capacitor and tried it first but that wasn't the problem. this guy is a life saver. the other video also said start with the pressure switch. i did but not thoroughly. I almost gave up but found this great video. Left power on and tested with plastic cover. Fried a thick layer of insect material out to find bugs were defiantly the culprit. Headed to venmo now to tip as the well guy was gonna charge 300 dollars just to show up tomorrow. thank you.

Hi! You’re attention to detail about well tank systems is fantastic. Just bought this house this past October, it’s my first time dealing with a well water system. Yesterday I replaced a bad PVB valve for my lawn sprinkler system, I was manually testing out the zones when after 10 to 12 minutes everything cut off. I went inside and there was no water at all. I checked the tank and did your 3 tests: tank is empty of water. The contacts are open under the switch cover. Tank has about 34 lbs of pressure using a tire gauge to check (the pressure gauge on the system must be bad as it reads zero). I am much more knowledgeable about this than I’ve ever been after watching two of your videos, but would feel more confident trying to troubleshoot and repair if we could speak in person. - Nick and family without water. But, this video helped me diagnose what my issue was so that when I called for estimates I didn't have people showing up with 9 million dollar quotes. Thanks for a great video!!!...our pump which we use to pull water from a pond to a frost free faucet for filling water troughs for horses, 1/2 HP Utilitech Convertible jet pump, stopped working and it would only hum and sometimes would not even do that. Given that it was installed by another person several years ago in a concrete tile sunk vertical in the ground for freeze prevention, the space to work on it for me (6' 1") was daunting. I followed the format of checking voltage etc and ended up removing the capacitor and checking....a local electric shop confirmed the bad capacitor and although it was a different type, it did fit in the control box.....well, the motor still hummed. I confirmed again voltage to the motor, but this time I also checked in the control box and I got reading of 125 volts in three areas and 20 volts in another....it turns out the switch which converts from 115 to 230 for this model had some blackened wires when closely inspected (no small feat in the confined space of the concrete tile), and after I unscrewed the switch and further looked, a bug of some sort had apparently shorted out the wire. I cleaned the switch and tried again....now 125 volts across all contacts and a running, pumping pump!!.........I would have never thought a bug could have caused this problem. Removing and replacing the pump with all the connecting elbows to work on it out of the space would have been such a hard task.

Hi! I forgot to add in my comment that I have a shallow well. I have a jet pump(flowise), I primed my pump by removing the psi gage, reaped and put back, check the air pressure and tried to hold the lever to restart my pump. It is near impossible to get the pressure to 10, it shuts off or I couldn't hold it any longer! Thank you for all your insight!!! I learned more in 10 minutes than I learned in 10 years being on a well. This pump and tank I purchased a year ago.

I measured the voltage across the center two wires. I had 70 volts. I measured 245 volts across the outer two contacts. With the power turned off, I used a quick spray of brake cleaner followed by some canned air to make it evaporate quickly. After cleaning the contacts and turning the power back on i measured 245 volts across the middle two wires. Thank you for sharing your video. I hope this adds a possible troubleshooting step for anyone that already knows how to use a multimeter safely. Flicking the switch may make it work for a while, but if it's dirty the contacts should be cleaned so that you get a lot more time. I realized after the fact that it was probably 7 or 8 years since I cleaned the contacts. So I should try to do it every 5 years from now on. Anyway, thank you for an excellent video!

I’ve been trying to learn a lot about well systems as my well pump stopped working yesterday and I knew next to nothing about it. Haven’t solved the issue yet, but the knowledge is useful. Here’s my situation: Well pump stopped working, I thought maybe it was the pressure switch. No breakers were tripped, but I was the second person to take a look once I got home so I’m not sure what it looked like right as it stopped working. Replaced pressure switch because it was old and I figured it was the issue, but now see that there’s juice to the control box and the pressure switch, but the pump isn’t kicking on. The bladder tank seems fine, so I’m not sure if the issue is down in the actual pump. Going to work on it some more today to see if I can get water, but any extra advice would be great. Trying to avoid calling a technician out unless absolutely necessary. Great channel!

It could be a pump that's dieing, or you have a dry well due to a leaking toilet. Turn off well breaker for 1 hour & within 15 minutes of it being off look behind each toilet in their tanks & see if any are empty. A leaking toilet can leak for weeks w/o you knowing. Also look for leaks in the yard/near well & underneath the house. If the pump is old 15+ years it might be bad, call a well company. But you can check the toilets first & fix it if you find one leaking

Great videos so far! I've had about a week long well saga. We are new owners of a cabin that is about a 10 minute drive from any connectivity, so I'm currently in the woods trying to learn what I can before returning to troubleshoot. Our issues began with a sudden influx of heavy sediment about a week ago after rains. We had to leave the cabin that way to return to work for a week. Upon return the color had improved and so we ran the well for several hours, with gradually improving clarity. Finally we decided the appearance was acceptable and proceeded with adding bleach per our health dept disinfectant procedure. During this time of running bleach water to our cold water faucets we suddenly lost pressure. We realized this as the toilet tank wouldn't fill after intentionally flushing it several times to bring bleach water to the line. From here we removed the well head and can visually see water flowing about 8 ft below surface when the pump is on. Is this normal?? The pressure gauge on our tank will build to 20 when we close all lines exiting the pressure tank but will immediately drop to zero once our first spigot off the pressure tank is opened. No water outflow. It is interesting to me that the pressure will develop to 20 even when the power to the pump is off. I'm going to head back and test the switch. Any comments would be appreciated! I know its tough to diagnosis from afar but its awesome that you are helping so many.. Thanks

Pull the pump line up & out, that leaking at 8ft down shouldn't be happening, probably a cracked pipe. Be cautious bc a cracked pipe cam finish breaking once you pull it up, so tie the wire to something big kinda as a safety factor incase it gets away from you it won't suck everything down the well & lose it all. Have 2 people there when you do this. 1 persons job is to always hold the pipe. This will explain the heavy sediment issue too. It's just been running & circulating water & mixing everything up. Once you fix the leak at the 8ft area, everything else will return to normal. 99% certain

After leaving the first comment I proceeded to call a local well drilling company and they actually had an on call technician come out who confirmed a broken line. Unfortunately what he thought would be a 30 minute fix has not yet been resolved. He apparently tried pull up what was broken but was not able. So he indicated the need to dig it out. Thanks again. Hoping this fix stays less than $1000 and fixes our sediment issue!

First, love the information on your channel. Second, length on the length, it is ONLY too long if it is long because you repeat yourself, which I have NOT seen you do, so chill on that topic. You are spot on. The air pressure setting on my tank needs work to be set right. Looking online is frustrating as you get many strange ideas by people that likely have little to no experience with home water systems.... Appreciate your way of explaining this. Now, for a bit of background, I am an engineer that designs and engineers solutions to major pumping and other problems in refineries, power plants, and chemical plants. I understand fully pump systems, but each in the field is different as each is designed for a specific purpose. Home systems, although obviously the most common pumps people will ever see, are completely overwhelmed with ametures giving poor or incorrect advice. Much appreciated your direct method of explaining things.....

Thank you for this video, it's 1:19am CST right now. Water stopped working, found poor contacts at the switch. Had 240v on both sides, couple of flicks and restored water. You're a life saver! Will be replacing switch tomorrow.

I do maintance and repairs for my landlord, we've had so many water issues lately..most of which I've fixed myself, one being putting 2 new swiches and guages, , because we have 2 wells ..a well on each side of the property. I actually had issue today that I fixed, but I came across your vid when I googled something. I'm glad I found you, yu did a good job describing how these work.

Thanks for the video ... came home from doc appointment to a house with no water .. My Wife was on the phone calling to have someone come out to fix it .. I went on pc found you off the bat .. 2 hours later water was back on .. the switch was bad little spring was missing .. thank you for ur help .. my 1st time working on something like this

thank you for the video! mine is for a irrigation system. When i checked the contacts i am getting a spark and im still not getting water. the contacts are staying closed. can you recommend what i should check next?

I like to thank you very much for your detail explanation. We woke up to no water and after watching a few minutes of your video I was confident enough to check the electrical component and found a small lizard trapped dead. I used the plastic cover to separate the connections and with a wooden stick (Chinese chopstick ), removed the lizard

Just wanted to say thank you, well stopped working all of a sudden this morning so I found your video and went out and moved the contacts/points and the pump kicked on. Must have been a spider or something between the contacts. But I think I will get a extra pressure switch just in case. Thanks for the great video.

I've searched your channel and other sources for why my switch stays stuck on. For some time, I could tap the box and it would shut off. That tells me the relays are bad. However I had a leak in the water line that fed the switch so I had to fix that first. Fixed that and now the switch won't shut off at all. I saw where it was said the pump may not be reaching pressure, but I doubt that since the tap thing was working. I tried light sanding the contacts at the same time I fixed that leak. Always a bad idea to try and fix two things at once. I'm going to now check that there isn't some debris in the water side of the switch, then replace the switch entirely, if the cleaning doesn't work. You do a great job on your videos! Thanks for being there!

Definitely check the nipple below the switch. It may be full of rust. It's possible that you could have a metal fitting in pump that has corroded a hole in it & leaking out some of the pressure. If u turn off the pump breaker and see the pressure drops to 0, there's Definitely a hole in the fitting at the pump (or cracked plastic fitting). Normally once a pump is 12-15 years old its worn down internally and harder for it to build pressure. Hopefully this helps

​@@h2omechanic Wow! I'm amazed that you would reply so fast! I cleaned up everything I could on the switch and still have an issue. The "nipple" is actually a small 1/4 line that feeds from the side of the pump housing. It is definitely clear, as it sprays out plenty of water. I replace the entire switch. No change. Before trading out the switch, I adjusted it to put in higher pressure. I have a 20/40. It went above 40. The pressure does not drop when the breaker is off. It certainly doesn't go to zero. I'm suspect of the tank and what might be involved there. I bought this house a year ago and it has been fine. I don't know how old the system is.

I could clarify... my pump is above ground and draws from a cistern. That is why the pressure feed is a tube from the pump housing to the pressure switch. It's about 16" long. If I put in a new system, should I be concerned about jumping from a 20/40 to a 40/60? most of the pipes are copper. It is a 40 yr old home in Mexico.

Initially, I was certain the pump was good. I had it rebuilt a year earlier. I also judged that the gauge would show full pressure or even more than full. After talking with someone else, I replaced the pump, gauge, and pressure switch. It's fine now. I'll accept that the pump was bad but hate that it was not something I could physically diagnose.

Thank you. This gives me somewhere to start with my trouble shooting. Multimeter says there's plenty of juice to the pressure switch, but no spark opening and closing the contacts. I think the next step is to see if there's power at the well head. Looks like I'll be watching some more of your videos!
