Subnautica has been on my list for a long while! Produced by Unknown Worlds and set in the tropical waters of Planet 4546B, you must survive incredible odds, crafting, building and exploring to solve the mysteries that lie deep below the waves.
This song was an interesting one for me. I set out to write a silly song full of fish puns but it ended up being something a lot more personal, there's a lot of meaning in the lyrics down beneath all the fish stuff.
I actually wrote this one a year ago! It took a long while to come to fruition, last year was a busy year! So I apologise for the year old meme I also snuck in there... I didn't have the heart to cut it.
A huge thanks to SquigglyDigg for returning to the channel with her awesome vocals and also her advice in putting this one together, I don't think it'd be here if it wasn't for her input!

That was very intentional! It's a song about realising that just because you don't achieve one thing, it doesn't mean you should give up, because you might end up using those skills in succeeding somewhere else. In Subnautica you play a space explorer forced to find a home in the ocean instead. In my life I dreamed of being an actor or an animator. I never managed to make a career in either, but I used those skills and found a home on KZbin. This song tells both of those stories. :)

I'm aware this song is a Subnautica song, but if you'll pardon the pun, you really went a lot deeper with it than that! As someone who's had to deal with and overcome a lot of trauma in my life that has resulted in oddly specific triggers I have needed to work on (as they were fairly specific and very common in media and life), this highly resonated with me, not just as a song about a game I enjoy, but as a song that can also be read as overcoming and pushing past trauma. Just like it said, you can't live your life in silent running, and that hit hard. I've been trying to push past what I struggle with instead of avoid it, and this song touched me in a very personal way. Been a fan of your music for a long while now, but this is the first comment I'm leaving, because of how this song felt to listen to. Here's to pushing past the waves of life.

It was hard to wave my home goodbye, looks like the waves are my home tonight. As a kid I dreamed of space, now I'm finally awake in the wake of the waves. Never thought I'd have to find my place alone But now I know there's no waves like home As a kid I dreamed of space now I'm finally awake in the wake of the waves. I'mma be honest, this is my favorite part of the song. I love Squiggly's voice. I also love the part about the "Sharks 'stead of peepers" and "Everybody has to dance with a reaper". That whole section reminded me of one of my favorite songs called "Other Side (Grass is Greener)" about how the grass isn't always greener on the other side. Some people have challenges you can't imagine, even if they don't show it. So rather than wanting to live someone else's life, live yours the way you want to and face your challenges.

Hey, I wanted to let you know that the reason I love your work is that you go all out. You don't just sing the song, you do EVERYTHING, animations, text that fits the theme, dressing for the theme, it really makes you unique, helps you stand out. You didn't have to edit it so you were in the Seamoth, but you did, and it added to it. You didn't need to dress in the doki doki uniform and make your own 'doki doki you'm but you did, and it added to it and made it more engaging. You put that extra effort in, it shows you care, and it really sells me on your work.

As someone who's played Subnautica, this is such a good song. It really resonates with the feeling of needing to face your fears or you'll never get anywhere. I really loved how you flipped the genre of the game with this song. You took a game that's based around benthic horror and survival, and reframed it as a story about building a new life after being plunged into someplace alien. A lot of us feel we have it rough when we're kids, that we are always following someone else's rules and we think that going out into the world is where things change for the better. We're not necessarily wrong, but entering the world can feel like crashing onto another planet, we carry only fragments of the world we knew with us, and we have to use them to build a life for ourselves in a place that's no less difficult to live in. We have our own reapers to fight who want to take us for everything, and where a place doesn't already exist for us we have to build one for ourselves. No matter how sturdy our shelter is, though, we still have to leave it for the waters to stay alive. Beautiful work, I've become an instant fan of your creative vision and look forward to seeing what you have yet to create :)

i cry *every time* i hear this song, man. hits home and makes my heart ache. very honest, yet comforting and encouraging overall vibe & lyrics. its like a conversation with a loved one about pushing through your trauma and fears, to enjoy the beauty of life and your own creative power. ive always loved the ocean, but am also extremely scared of it. using subnautica- an alien ocean where youre alone and have to learn with little guidance- is absolutely *perfect* to dive into this topic. (get it? dive? heheh. [is boo'ed off the stage]) a huge thank you to everyone who worked on this masterpiece. i revisit this song often and it really does help me keep pushing onward 💙

It's always a good day when another Stupendium song shows up! I really, really like the lyrics in this one. As an unapologetic lover of puns who also has a fondness poetry, I think you found a way to blend them fantastically here. And, of course, it's always lovely to hear SquigglyDigg on any track, but it sounds like I owe them special thanks for helping this to come to life. I'm really glad it did. Even if it took a year, I'd say it was worth it! I hope you have a wonderful day, and thanks for the amazing song!

Lyrics: [Verse 1] We make plans Think we know where we're going to go But fate's hand deals more than the cards it shows You could dream about the stars You could crash and fall apart What's important is what you do with your time below So you're out of your depth? So you're lost at sea? If you want to learn to swim then you've got to be You may think that it's enough Just to keep your head above But you've got to swim down if you want to breathe It's a strange new world and you must survive Who says you need a map to thrive? Scan the wreckage for the parts Use the parts to build a path Doesn't matter how you fall if you land the dive Habitat creating It can be habit making So shake it up You've got to do a little cavitating Can't build a shuttle if you're huddled in the rubble Yeah you've got to make some bubbles Get a lungful 'cus the task is waiting [Chorus] It was hard to wave my home goodbye Looks like the waves are my home tonight As a kid I dreamed of space Now I'm finally awake in the wake of the waves Never thought I'd have to find my place alone But now I know there's no waves like home As a kid I dreamed of space Now I'm finally awake in the wake of the waves [Verse 2] You know I always thought I lived a pretty wild life And I'm living here with all this pretty wildlife It's survival of the fishes and it's high tide And on the food chain my link is now a mile wide Crafting from my raft is an impractical reality With every asset I amass subtracted from my salary I know this package holiday was packaged with some tragedy But actually I'm cracking on my back to the fatalities I never thought I was born an explorer But now I'm one with the fauna and flora I never thought much of seafood before but Tonight we're having steamed clams under the Aurora You know the universe has plan for you So just relax and maybe snack upon some lantern fruit I'm a naturalist, you couldn't hold a candle to 'Cuz underwater candles really aren't the lamp to use [Chorus] It was hard to wave my home goodbye Looks like the waves are my home tonight As a kid I dreamed of space Now I'm finally awake in the wake of the waves Never thought I'd have to find my place alone But now I know there's no waves like home As a kid I dreamed of space Now I'm finally awake in the wake of the waves [Verse 3] Everyone has a Leviathan coming But you can't live your life in silent running You know it's gonna get cold outside Break the ice, let the sun in As the path gets darker and deeper You might find there are Sharks 'stead of Peepers You may just wish to huddle with your Cuddlefish But everybody has to dance with a Reaper I need to keep my grip somehow I'm in some really deep ship right now... I need to keep my grip somehow I'm in some really deep ship right now... I need to keep my grip somehow I'm in some really deep ship right now... I need to keep my grip somehow I'm in some really deep ship right now... [Chorus] It was hard to wave my home goodbye Looks like the waves are my home tonight As a kid I dreamed of space Now I'm finally awake in the wake of the waves Never thought I'd have to find my place alone But now I know there's no waves like home As a kid I dreamed of space Now I'm finally awake in the wake of the waves

I know lots of people have mentioned this, but this has been one of my favorite songs since I discovered and started binging your work, and when it hit me personally this morning, felt that it might be appropriate to add to the chorus of stories. I've been scrambling to salvage my life since 2011, and in november of 2020, it all came crashing down again. I've spent months trying desperately to cling to every tiny scrap of stability and familiarity I can, while trying to slowly build myself up a platform to take some big, terrifying steps forward. This morning, during some work-related driving, it hit me that I am in the middle of this song's message, and I've got to stop hiding in the wreckage to build my shuttle and find my way home. Thanks, Stupes.

Ever hear a song so good that it makes you want to buy and play the game it's about? I did, and I'm glad I did, because now I finally get that line about things getting 'deducted from my salary'. This is top quality work, no two ways about it. The lines about landing the dive and dancing with a reaper really stick with me even six months after I first heard the song and finished the game, and I still come back here every now and again. So...thank you.

Ironically I really found comfort in Subnautica and your music when I didn't have a home. When I was kicked out by my mum's new husband I lived with a friend for a little while and he introduced me to Subnautica. I almost cried when my first base was exactly how I wanted it to be. Every song about missing home or making a home (pardon the pun) hits really close to home for me. Your song is beautiful and it made me tear up. Thank you for sharing it with us ❤

Stupes, I want to say that I am eternally grateful for you introducing me to this legendary game which I have already racked up 7 days on.Thanks so much, and I needn't say this song is a banger, like all of the tracks you make. The mixture of clever references only players will get and the fish puns alongside this song's deep (no pun intended) meaning makes for a great listen. One thing I really love about your works is that whilst they have many references that show a deeper understanding for the game rather than just going with the aesthetic sthetic, they are also very easy to grasp.I haven't played the games more than half your songs are based on, but I enjoy them immensely regardless.Once again, thanks for introducing me to this wonderful game that I am having a great time playing.I look forwards to your next song. As a side note, I am also very grateful you made a song for a Rachet&Clank game. That series was my childhood and is (in my opinion) criminally underrated. I wish you all the best for your future songs. 🧡

There's something very soothing and reassuring about the subject of this song. The idea that not everybody succeeds at the first shot at a career/lifestyle, what matters is how you adjust your expectations to your reality, and that you "land the dive", so to speak, no matter how you fall. Being in my mid-20's and a little over halfway through college, I'm still at a crossroads in life and I expect that things are going to look very different for me 5 years from now than they do now. Whether I'll still be on this path at that time, or if I'll be finding my own home in "the wake of the waves", remains to be seen. But people like you, and songs like this, give me confidence that it doesn't matter either way, as long as I can figure out how to make my own way in the world that I am satisfied with.
