The band's style incorporates characteristics of melodic death metal combined with the melodies of traditional Celtic music. The band is Swiss, but that "Irish" sound in their music is influenced by Celtic culture. The Celtic tribes covered a fair bit of Europe back during the age of the Roman Empire, so it doesn't necessarily have to be Irish to be Celtic. Eluveitie actually have a lot of songs where the lyrics are sung in ancient Gaelic, the language used by the Celtic tribes. Also, that weird instrument is a hurdy gurdy, which dates back to medieval times. The crank handle turns a wheel across the strings, with keys on the instrument adjusting the notes. It creates a sound that feels like a mix between a violin and bagpipes.

they're from switzerland, actually eluveitie means something like "the swiss". also, the official latin name of switzerland is "confoederatio helvetica" not that it matters. :) btw, that instrument is called hurdy gurdy. you could also try their newest song "aidus", but honestly, this band exists a long time, so they have a number of great songs.

@@ImFrancis325 Loved your reaction! Your face! That was exactly mine when first introduced to Eluveitie with Rebirth. A few more Eluveitie songs for you to try - their recently released 'Aidus', an earlier song with the previous female singer 'Call Of The Mountains' (quite different to what you just heard, but still great) and also a collab they just did with pagan folk group Faun called 'Gwydion'. I think you'll like them all!

The word 'eluveitie' comes from Etruscan graffiti found in the vicinity of Mantua, dating back to around 300BC, and has been interpreted as being the Etruscan form of the Celtic '(h)elvetios', meaning 'the Helvetian' which presumably refers to a person of Helvetian descent living in Mantua.

For Celtic folk metal try out Cruachan or Skyclad. More broadly from folk metal - Thyrfing or Fintroll or Falkenbach. Then if you want some Indian folk influences- check out Bloodywood. Other than that I’d be curious to see you reach to Therion - something classic like To Mega Therion or maybe even something from their new album.

That was me too when I first heard this! It was my introduction to Eluveitie. A phenomenal song and great reaction from this guy. I agree, he should try Aidus next and just to throw a curve-ball at him, maybe The Call Of The Mountains with their equally brilliant previous female singer. Also, they did a really cool collab with Faun recently called Gwydion. Hope he does that too.
