Wow. I've never been so offended by a Caravan of Garbage video. I appreciate James and Mason's perspectives, but sometimes I feel they should just stick to talking about movies, and not the more important stuff. The thing that I specifically took umbridge with was when Mason perpetuated the misconception that the Gobots are a Transformers knockoff. They're not a knockoff! Toy robots that turned into vehicles and other objects were just a trend in early 80s Japan, Bandai and Takara were just 2 companies taking part in the trend. Gobots even got imported to America first in 1983!

Fun fact: In Biblical tradition the story of Noah, found in Genesis, was originally known for leading to the first ever crop harvest. However, due to the flood all crops were blue. This led to the Book of Genesis and thus the story of Noah, getting the working title Blue Harvest, which just so happens to be the same working title of the original Star Wars

The leading theory as to why so many different cultures throughout history have some sort of flood myth is cuz most cities and civilizations were built around rivers for agriculture transport access to fresh water etc. Rivers can overflow and flood, and that would be their world as they knew it, flooding. Over time, as myths tend to do, the stories were embellished and mythologyized

As someone who grew up with religion, going to church, and in a religious family, I loved this movie purely for the fact that it was willing to imagine what the reality of a fantastical story might look like. There's actually a very simple explanation as to why stories of a great flood are so prevalent in ancient literature and myth: the earliest cradles of civilization were all built along river valleys where flooding was a common and devastating occurrence. These stories would have been passed down as warnings to future generations and become embellished over time. As a point in favour of this, ancient Egypt is notable for not having a cataclysmic flood myth because the Nile was incredibly predictable and reliable in the timings and severity of it's flooding and was seen as calm and a life bringing force rather than one of potential world ending danger. It's the same reason why snakes are a regular feature of early myth: venomous snakes appear in many areas of the world and are, generally speaking, incredibly dangerous to people who don't have access to modern anti venom treatment, as such, embellished stories of serpents are a logical result of warnings against dangerous animals

Because while people were just as smart as we are now (if they had the right environment anyway)... their knowledge beyond their own experience was basically non-existent. The scholars or 'elite' might of course have had some more knowledge about the world and the way things work - especially in certain civilisations - but the general person was basically a moron. Their tiny little slice of life and what some local 'wisemen' told them was all they knew and if they experienced a bad flood they can understood 'what if it didn't stop?!'.
@Alkeeros

To further the snake point, I've heard the theory that it may also be related to how our ancestors (pre human) lived in trees and snakes were one of the most regular, dangerous predators. Fascinating stuff

9:50 No, Ben, it _IS_ Abraham that God instructed to kill (his son, specifically). Yes, Maso confused it w/ that King Soloman story, but in that story God _NEVER_ tells Soloman to kill the baby. Soloman himself *proposes* cutting the baby in half in order to ferret out who the real mother is. It was a clever ruse.

This lore sounds wild what the fuck
@itayeldad3317
@itayeldad3317 Ай бұрын
@jackiechan5815 i mean. it makes sense in context. It's Solomon's early days of rule and he just asked God to make him a good judge. So the next day, Two prostitutes who supposedly live In the same room in a brothel comes to him for a trial. They both gave birth around the same time. One mother's baby died shortly after and the other lived. Each claims the baby that lives is hers. With one claiming the other switched them inher sleep after the death. Solomon proposes the cutting him in half as a 'compromise', but he never actually intends to do so. He just watches the women's reaction. One accept the judgement, and says its only fair both of them will have dead children. The other pleads with the king to not kill the baby and says she'd rather he'll be raised by the other woman than die. By those reactions, he concludes the actual mother is the one who wasn't ok with her son being killed

Darren Aronofsky is my favourite director, but not because I think his films are particularly great, but I just love to say his name so much. if that bit in Donnie Darko is right, and the words "cellar door" are the most beautiful words in the English language, then "Darren Aronofsky" is a very close second.

This video explains so much. For one, I now understand why my grandma came home after viewing this in the theatre and going "I don't remember reading _that_ in the Bible."

I'm blown away by the fact you used clips from The Chosen to represent the feeding of the 5000. I love that show and love when people refer to it when not even actually talking about it. Also "look it's more about the vibes" is actually a legit argument in Biblical scholarship

Maso's B2 bomber point is pretty irrefutable proof that either: God doesn't exist, God doesn't have teleportation abilities (at least with inorganic matter -- could be like Terminator time travel rules), or that God hasn't seen Dial of Destiny yet and thus the idea has yet to occur to him/her/them.

Such a pedantic comment to make but the so called 'bible thumper' at 15:02 is actually a pretty thoughtful and nuanced theologian called Tim Mackie from The Bible Project, they make cool stuff over there

For the record, the whole world wouldn't have to flood. It was THEIR whole world. The Bible isn't a story about all of humanity. It's about the personal histories of the people who wrote it and their relationship with God. For example, anything happening to native Americans wouldn't be in the Bible, since Middle Easterners wouldn't know anything about them and God is unlucky to be like "hey by the way, these people tens of thousands of miles away"
@milliondollarmistake

on the other hand the humans who wrote the bible didn't include native americans because those humans didn't know the americas existed

Not to be a jerk, but there isn't a similar version of this story in Islam. There is this story. Noah is recognized as a prophet of God in Islam, since the religion builds and expands on the Torah and New Testament.

In the Bible, God promised Noah he wouldn't flood the earth again. Normally I never do this, like ever, but I'm actually pretty proud to say I wrote a book a few years ago called Year 47 about what would happen if God broke that promise. It's a survival horror western. If that interests you, go give it a look-see. If not, cool. Love you.

All I can picture now, is God raising his hands in anger about to send a flood, and off to the side Noah points his finger at him with a side eye, going "Heyheyhey!". Then God slumps down grumbling.

In regards to the Deadpool question: In the comics, there is actually an 'evil' version of Deadpool that was made from discarded parts of the original Deadpool. A fan (I think) went around collecting all the parts Deadpool had lost in fights (an arm here, a leg there etc) and kept them in their freezer. Then DP found them, tossed them all in a dumpster and went on his merry way. The parts them thawed out, the healing factor kicked it and all the parts glommed together to form a new Deadpool.

Science Trivia! Noah's boat was too large and would have sank due to the wood flexing and water intruding. This was a problem with real ships that were smaller in construction. In addition, floods leave a layer of material sorted by the moving water. If we had a global flood we would expect to find a global layer of flood graded strata dated to the same event. We have found no such layer.

And there were, you know, other civilizations at the time... like just before the flood and just after, and there doesn't appear to be any disruptions to their civilization.

....and having breeding populations reduced to such a small number would create genetic bottlenecks. It is a problem facing cheetahs in real life. ...and we don't have enough water in the atmosphere for that kind of a flood. ...and we would have to turn the planet into a pressure cooker to hold that much water in the air, so everything is already dead and we don't need a flood. This list goes on and on. There are lots of aspects that don't really work.
