@@twelvecatsinatrenchcoat true but I have a feeling that even then he is kinda "unknown" to most people. Like...if he doesn't get to lead his own thing, then at least give him a recurring memorable role in a franchise. I know his GOTG character reappeared in Captain Marvel but obviously I mean more than that. I just want people beyond film buffs to recognise him because he really deserves it. He has so much range. He even gave his bit-part in the frikking Eragon movie gravitas. Good god, I just love Djimon Hounsou

Fact about Gladiator I like to say. They filmed it in Malta and asked the government if they wanted to keep the Rome sets as a tourist attraction. The government, for some reason, said no. Later they changed their mind when they saw the sets and asked them to keep them but at the point they'd just been built cheaply. Scott said if they had wanted to keep them before they would have actually been built properly. To this day I bet Malta is kicking itself it doesn't have the Gladiator Rome tourist attraction

Great video as always guys! Random fact: my Dad is a retired zoo veterinarian and is actually well trained on using tranquillizer guns and darts as it's very necessary in order to protect the public but also animal lives. He also used to teach courses at universities to vet students and government workers on immobilization as in most cases authorities will shoot and kill animals that pose a threat. Maybe my Dad should look into being a sniper next, hahah!

Richard Harris story! I saw him as King Arthur in Camelot in Toronto in or around 1985. He was great (despite his ... let's say workmanlike ... singing voice), but the moment I remember best was when the sound system in the theatre started crackling and popping for like 20 seconds. Harris paused whatever speech he was making, looked up into the rafters, and said something like, "Are you quite done with your fiendish trickery, Merlin!?" That brought the house down. It was the kind of unpredictable impromptu moment that can make live theatre such fun. Also, like Mason's love of the Minigun Moment, I have an affinity for Barrages of Flaming Arrows, and I hold Gladiator responsible ... It was the first time I'd seen such a thing, and it was life-changing. Not really, but I liked it. Edit: Sorry I sent a duplicate of this to your gmail, but I don't know whether you read YT comments. And really, why would you?

Kevin Spacey was cleared of all charges. Armie Hammer's case never even went to trial because the accuser's own lawyers dropped her as a client. She refused to sign her own testimony affidavits. Elmo's puppeteer's accuser completely recused themselves and dropped all charges. Woody Allen and Soon-Yi Previn have been MARRIED for TWENTY SEVEN YEARS now and they have two children. Trevor Bauer proved in court that his accuser deliberately tried to frame him by counter-suing for her text messages to be made public instead of asking for any financial judgment (even though her accusation cost him literally tens of millions) Are you folks ever going to figure out that the media will always act like these people are monsters even when they're absolved? You cancel them IMMEDIATELY at the drop of a hat, then just ignore it when they spend years and decades battling to prove their innocence.

13:01 when I first watched this movie as a kid, I was expecting the Gaul to be Proximo. An old gladiator coming back from retirement, with a mask, it must be the old guy who's sort of a mentor for Maximus, right? But no, it was just a random old bloke... also, if _Gladiator_ was made today, the Gaul would be a cameo, like he takes his mask off after Maximus put him on the ground and its Hulk Hogan, or Kirk Douglas, or some other old actor that people would be like "oh, I get it!"

@@twelvecatsinatrenchcoat Gladiator is far, far, far, far, far more inaccurate than black cleopatra. Switching someone's race is wrong, but re-writing 1800 years of history to shoehorn in a fictitious coup that restores the Roman Republic in the second century is waaaaaay more incorrect. I *hate* it when lefties re-write history to make it conform to their childish worldview, and there is no better example of that than Gladiator.

I love the idea that they had a vet on sight with tranquilizer darts for the tigers. As if that would do anything hahaha. It can take between 2 to 10 minutes, or even longer, for a tranquilizer to kick in. The tiger would need 10 seconds at most to cause some serious problems lol.

Unfortunately, being currently 26 I was never able to see this absolute masterpiece of a film at the cinema. But that opportunity presented itself a year ago at a special screening, and it was a visceral fucking experience to say the least. The opening battle on the big screen might actually be one of the best on screen battles of all time (with D-Day from Saving Private Ryan).

Don't want to be that guy but I'm gonna be that guy. The marcomannic wars were a defensive war against a coalition of germanic tribes who invaded roman territory so Marcus Aurelius wasn't really an expansionist warmonger.

2:10 (maso's comedy voice) I tell you what Ridley Scotts been trying to bloody capture the magic of gladiator am I right? *badumtiss* Kingdom of Heaven more like Kingdumb of Heaven, Last Duel more like Last Gruel, Napoleon more like Napooleon! (for the record I really like KoH and actually think the directors cut is better than gladiator. But MAN is he chasing a white whale with trying to hit the same critical and commercial success with these historical epics, especially when he blames millenials using their phones for a film failing to blockbust).

Not sure whether it was Lawrence or Ben on edits this week, but the edit was fire. I loved the dual-wielding sword-shaped sticks. The headpat shortly after was also a nice (and not inappropriate) touch. Had it been a sword I would have said "That's cool!" but it wasn't so I didn't.

Lol, you guys don't even know the name "Marcus Aurelius" (Richard Harris.) He's considered the greatest stoic philosopher of all time. He's the best part of the movie, many of his lines are taken from the real, actual 2000 year old book by Marcus Aurelius: the meditations. Not only that, many of Russell Crowes lines are also taken from that book, to imply he was quoting him. "what we do in life, echos in eternity!" "Death smiles at us all, the best we can do is smile back " "Nothing happens to any of us that we are not fitted by nature to near." -most of the big moments in the script were lifted directly from 2000 year old philosophy texts. -thats cool. That's what you should have said in "that's cool." 😂

@@Dorian_sapiens stoicism is a philosophy that has been around since before Christianity. Whether or not it is currently a popular meme on social media is not really relevant in its long-term history. That's kind of like saying Buddhism is a dead meme, and good riddance. memes were never really the point of those schools of thought.

In high school, we watched this gladiator movie, and Robin Hood: prince of thieves in our history class. And for an end of year project, my friend and I, in one setting, made a “death battle” video between the titular gladiator, and titular Robin Hood. Robin Hood won because he had ranged attacks and was able to deal damage before the gladiator got close.
