True, Chomsky is wise and erudite. But no one can be right about everything and no man should be treated as God. As a guru, or a teacher, yes. But not as God. It is a fact that the current president is not Donald Trump but Joe Biden. And we are in a crisis under Biden, not under Trump. It could be argued that Trump will lead to a bigger crisis, and I agree that this argument has force. And yet, it is only an argument. What is happening under Biden is a FACT. We must never put our own thoughts above fact.

Very interesting and thought provoking. I’m 80 and it’s a bit disturbing to hear that some of “my presidents” chose to contribute to business instead of to quality of life. I’d like to hear Professor Chomsky briefly evaluate the presidents - and - give some opinions on the mechanics of how a pro-business president gets the job instead of a quality of life president. Thinking before writing this, I’m reminded that Eisenhower (upon retiring) uncharacteristically warned about the Military Industrial Complex and how, apparently a really good man, Carter, was the butt of jokes in the media and only got one term. It seems that the only time we get a glimpse of truth from politicians is as they retire and have their last moment at the podium.

The central planners aren't in the government. The rentier oligarchy at the top of wall street (the deep state) does central planning for their private benefit, and they are the employers of politicians. The job of the politician is to deliver voters to the oligarchy by campaigning on whatever gets them elected with oligarchy funding, then do whatever the oligarchy wants, and they are taken care of whether they are reelected or not. "Reagan’s election marked the ascension of deep political forces to a position of sovereignty. Practically speaking, what emerged was an exceptionist tripartite state comprised of (1) a feckless public state, (2) a sprawling security state, and (3) the anti-democratic deep state to which they are subordinated. This consolidation and institutionalization of top-down power was such that US governance could thereafter be described as a deep state system." Good, Aaron. American Exception: Empire and the Deep State (p. 260). If the US had majority rule, i.e. a democratic form of government, we would have a decent minimum wage, Medicare for all, free education, parental and sick leave, legal marijuana, workers on corporate boards, lower credit card interest, not allowing politicians to own stock or immediately graduate to becoming lobbyists, public funding of drug research for public drug patents, and some kind of green new deal, just at first glance at the polls. We have institutionalized opposition at best, not representation at all.

Jeffrey Epstein helped move $270,000 for renowned linguist Noam Chomsky and also paid $150,000 to Bard College president Leon Botstein, the Wall Street Journal has reported. According to the newspaper, and also confirmed by Chomsky and Botstein, the late sex offender and financier had financial dealings with the two academics and had met with them multiple times. In 2018, Chomsky asked Epstein for help with a “technical matter” regarding the disbursement of common funds relating to his first marriage, the Journal reported. Meanwhile, in 2016, Botstein received checks from an account linked to Epstein that amounted to approximately $150,000, the Swiss American conductor and Bard College president told the Journal. Botstein told the Journal that Epstein had designated him as a consultant on the payments and made them appear as if they were fees for consulting work, which Botstein said he did not do for Epstein.

Millions of Americans don't "believe" climate change is real. That isn't stopping the devastating effects of global warming.
@greyleaf Жыл бұрын
This is about the stupidest fucking thing I've read in months. "Unwarranted dread" my ass. If fossil fuel usage continues at its current rate, we will effectively kill off at least 70% of the earth's population by 2100. Most people just choose not to care, or "believe things will be fine" because they're likely not going to experience the full brunt of the effects in their lifetimes. These are signs of selfishness, egocentricity, and negligence, and anyone with this sort of outlook is quite literally an enemy of humanity itself. Even if we completely stop all use of fossil fuels today and never combust a single ounce of oil again, so much damage has already been done that this century will certainly be marked by the most severe natural disasters and famines in the entirety of human history. But maybe you're privileged and don't have to worry about these things. Maybe you can just move somewhere where the effects aren't as pronounced. That doesn't stop it from destroying billions of other people's lives. But yeah, let's all just believe things won't be bad. That's surely the answer alright.

Noam Chomsky made quite a name for himself in his chosen field of linguistics.... Oh wait, nobody knows what he did in linguistics since he spent most of his time on geopolitics and without any formal training at that. He used to rail against those with no university background in engineering, architecture, aerodynamics or controlled demolition for daring to suggest anything suspicious about the government's version of 9/11. And here he is, the world's renowned expert on everything. He said the Bush administration couldn't have done it since "the Bush administration was not stupid." Where to begin?
