A year after the insurrection at the Capitol on January 6, 2021, and the success of Republican-led dismantling of voting rights by legislatures across the country, many have accused the Republican Party of imperilling democracy in the United States.
According to a recent Ipsos/NRP poll, 64 percent of Americans believe that democracy in their country is in crisis and at risk of failing. Yet political partisanship continues to rise, dominating discourse about government. While many blame former President Donald Trump for polarising the country, world-renowned scholar, author and political activist Noam Chomsky says responsibility largely lies with the GOP.
“Republicans have just become a denialist party. This precedes Trump. When President Obama was elected, Mitch McConnell, Senate leader for the Republicans and maybe the most influential person in the party, [...] said straight out that the Republicans have one goal, make sure he cannot achieve anything.”
“He's doing exactly the same thing now,” Chomsky says of McConnell and Senate Republicans.
“When Joe Biden was elected, McConnell said very explicitly, our goal is to ensure that he can achieve nothing. We'll harm the country as much as possible, and we will then blame it on the Democrats, and we'll come back to power. That's not a political party. That's a radical insurgency. No interest in democracy.”
This week in an UpFront special, Marc Lamont Hill speaks with Noam Chomsky about the state of democracy in the US.

@@gyrene_asea4133 In theory. Because that public channel created fear of capitalist party win, so all the progressive and conservative socialist small parties votes, giving the victory to the centrist socialist party, to a party majority seats position. A clear government manipulation over the public channel to force fear and win the elections with majority to govern alone without opposition small parties control. A type of issue that american citizens can only dream about having.

He never denied anything that happened in Srebrenica. He's explained many times before he almost never uses the word "genocide" to refer to anything because to him the Holocaust was the ultimate example of a genocide and if it's not close to that then he calls them atrocities or war crimes. It was refreshing to hear an interviewer really interviewing someone. The questions were not meant to lead the one being interviewed into giving a predetermined, desired answer. The interviewee, Noam Chomsky, clearly described our political situation with among other things, the Democrats having abandoned the workers and the Republicans having nothing to offer except culture wars and attempting to stonewall any attempts by the Democrats to achieve reforms. This is meant to enable the GOP to say that the Democrats can not achieve anything while the country falls apart. Why does it take a FOREIGN news service to clearly speak the unvarnished truth and not our own?

There are the obvious ones to ignore out right like the American Fox News network pundits, but I generally find people who make money to have public opinions to be in a bad spot where they need to have very black and white interpretations of complex situations so that laymen can understand, so I just generally read many things instead, rather than listen to people boil things down. Also I said he had a problematic opinion of Cambodia, not that he denied it. The greatest disparity of wealth between the rich and the poor in modern times occurred during the Obama administration, conversely the lowest unemployment rates for blacks and Hispanics in American history occurred during the Trump administration, and wages grew highest within the lowest wage earners. Now with president* Biden the gains for wages to the poor are being eradicated by the worst inflation in the United States in 40 years. As for abandoning parliamentarian politics it was Democrats who first failed to approve Reagan’s SCOTUS nominee Robert Bork based purely on politics, breaking 200 years of bipartisan appointment of qualified candidates. When the Republicans finally tried to return in kind it was the Democrats who first abandoned the filibuster when approving federal judges. Even now the bulk of Democrats support abandoning the filibuster entirely, but due to only two U.S. Senators have been unable to do so. Chomsky’s mind is crippled to the point of complete irrationality due to his bias against the United States and individual liberty.

This is overall a good interview, but the interviewer does exactly what Chomsky is saying cannot be done right now due to the intransigence of the Republicans, and that is say that both parties are equally responsible for today's problems. After Chomsky makes clear that Republicans intend to destroy the country, explicitly, the interviewer interrupts to say that Democrats are equally to blame. What can you do with that US "both-sides-ism" kind of thinking? Americans always seem to think that there are always two sides to culpability and that isn't always the case, certainly not with today's Republicans.

@@patriciahopkins8348 change the political system. Abolish the winner takes all seats in all levels of power. Adopt a 100% party list proportional parliament system in all levels. Germany: Liberal socialists Conservative socialists (communists) Centrist socialists Liberal capitalists Conservative capitalists (fascists) Centrist capitalists. 16 years of Merkel government coalition: Centrist socialists + Centrist capitalists. New german government: Liberal socialists + Centrist socialists + Liberal capitalists. As you can see, in a multi-party system, you dont need to make or full left coalition or full right coalition... As you can see, in germany neither the communist party neither the fascist party, are invited to form a government coalition. ;) They have their proportional votes seats, with their right to vote and propose laws, and to vote the government annual budget. They have the right to have a voice and to represent the citizens that have that ideals. But the majority, dont let them be government. Both communists and fascists (texas), are noisy minorities that no one does coalition. Germany shows that we can make socialist+capitalist coalitions. Meanwhile in USA, both 2 parties are under black mail form the extremists of all sides to be able to reach the 50%+1. naw, Trumps just scapegoat for people not paying attention. Its been happening since before Trump. He's just a more flashy example of it.

The problem of USA political system are "the winner takes all" the seats. Both parties are under extremism blackmail, that minorities, that make the difference between winning the election or not. Winning all the seats or loosing all the seats. USA, because of the winner takes all system, are far away from being a democracy. Its a system that blocks small parties to exist, only allowing useful vote on the main chronic 2 winners. 2 elected wings by the down 90%, full controlled by the same eagle, the top 10%. The illusion of choice.
