This is the first time I've seen a kind of podcast where it isn't a one-sided interview, but rather an actual conversation between two people who have chemistry. I like it.

Nathaniel, for you, at this point it seems that traveling constantly (and especially during winter) is already your default comfort zone. I think staying more in, enduring the bad weather, maintaining and nourishing connections and not escaping to make "new fun memories" would be the "out of your comfort zone" experience nowadays! I would be interested in knowing what you'd learn from that!! 😊 (or I'm just projecting my own experience 😂)

haha, I think you have a good point about that, Nathaniel is always changing and doing stuff, kinda like me, in a way, he's like living my dream life, because I always had to move, but yeah, sometimes staying is a challenge.

This is so incredibly relevant to me right now. I'm 25, moved to a new country where I don't have any friends, I don't yet speak the language, and I'm doing my PhD in a lab where my experience is a bit different from what the main research topics at hand are. I definitely feel distant from everyone and everything right now. Thanks for this!

I’m not in my 20s anymore but I know that when it comes to loneliness, one of the main issues is admitting it because it comes with some shame and then, there’s the taking initiative to figure out ways out of the loneliness. There’s nothing wrong with being on your own but we all need each other. There are definitely different types of loneliness and we have to be willing to figure out how do you address the type of loneliness that you have. It takes vulnerability, a willingness to do something about it and patience because you might not always get it right. But keep trying to pursue ways out of loneliness to get to your joy and connecting with like-minds 🤗

Nathaniel, when you talk about needing more stimulus, going outside of your comfort zone constantly, not being able to be at ease with downtime but at ease with going across the world, getting bored often- it just reminds me of myself and others who have ADHD. I’m not sure if you’ve ever been told that you may have it or were already tested for it, but the feelings you’ve been describing in this episode are what a lot of ADHDers share. As we lack dopamine and have poor executive function due to our brains being built differently, we crave exciting adventures or anything that gets us stimulated. It’s painful for us to relax because it requires us to sit in our racing minds that won’t shut up while it’s not even a struggle for neurotypicals (granted they’re not stressed) to relax. I’ve been watching your videos for awhile, and I’m not sure you’ll even read this, but I thought I’d just share my input in case you do and this potential discovery helps you on your journey. Whether or not you choose to identify with having ADHD, these struggles and feelings you describe are valid, and I think it’s okay to follow your path of extremes and many lifestyle changes if that’s how you operate best. Everyone’s unique at the end of the day and as long as we are accepting of ourselves and others in our differences, life truly becomes a beautiful thing to explore and be content with.

Agree!! I'm older now and my ADHD that I had growing up has definitely chilled. But, reading your take on Nathan's need for stimuli and constant adventure describes me perfectly all through my 20's & 30's. It's just now in my 40's that I can 100% relax and feel grateful for my past adventures while appreciating the contentment in my solitude. But, everything in moderation. I've found the perfect balance is accomplishing at least 1-2 goals per day (beyond the everyday stuff, like work, cleaning, ect) so that if I choose to reward myself by relaxing and not trying to take on too much I no longer feel the guilt that often comes with that. It's funny, as someone older now, my first instinct in listening to you and Lana (I subscribed to her channel yrs ago & find her to be an elegant, beautiful old soul) is "what can I learn from these two people about life at that young age"...but I'm glad I watched because you offer a great perspective to any age group. And, loneliness, boredom, finding balance doesn't discriminate - we all feel it at any age. It's comforting to know this and have it be so relatable. Loved this conversation. I think that yes loneliness can be an idea in our head, but it is also a biological mechanism that's naturally installed in us, much like hunger and thirst. It is a way for our body to tell us that we need to go get more of XYZ thing, or else the system is going to fail. So I try to use the feeling of loneliness as motivation to take action.

I feel like anybody who’s ever watched your vids prob also watches Lana, and vice versa lol. Inevitable collab! Edit: This is pretty much one of the best “podcasts” or discussions I’ve ever listened to, it’s so timely with where I am in my life right now, on the subject of loneliness, i find myself yearning for more of these types of conversations in life, so ironically it made me feel lonely too, lol. But as I get older and more aware, I think part of life is embracing the highs and lows as they come, and try to just find peace in the middle. I think if we live the right way, we aren’t perpetually always lonely or happy. Both feelings are so fleeting, we want one to end and the other to last forever, but that could never be the case, so I’m trying to embrace both and try find peace being in the middle

Nathaniel Drew, that recurring loneliness you feel, I have that as well-- no matter how many friends/activities I'm surrounded by. I really enjoyed both of your thoughts here and your vulnerability throughout this episode. This conversation has felt oddly validating, these are discussions I haven't had mirrored through others and its nice to hear that we are not 'alone' in these thoughts. I haven't figured out where my recurring loneliness stems from, but perhaps its a somewhat natural part of our existence, perhaps its the meaning we tie to it that can make it painful... thanks for these rich videos!

I understand wanting to have someone there at certain times and have explored why I feel that way. I thought back to when I traveled to Australia with my boyfriend at the time. A little bit after that trip, we went through pictures. He brought up things that I totally forgot about and I brought up things he forgot about. Those resurfaced and sparked many more good memories from that trip. Memories comprise much of the happiness we get from life and being with someone provides a witness to our own lives and we see how we affect their lives. On a deeper level, that gives us a feeling of satisfaction, accomplishment and purpose. We can have those memories for ourselves and still conjure up these feelings but maybe the fear might be in forgetting those memories when we're not sharing them with someone else.

I had a question for you, while listening to you guys, i felt like it opened up a layer within me too! and the question came up for me was, what if i for a few moments remove the mind from trying to understand what this loneliness is, but instead just explore it from not a mental perspective, or trying to figure out perspective, it becomes goes so much more deeper, and becomes such a deep observation within myself... amazing, have always loved the episodes!!!

The point you mention about how in doing one thing and living in the present, the one thing becomes everything is so profound to me. I feel that I am constantly trying to do 500 things at once in the pursuit of having everything. But lately, I've been realizing it's okay to feel fulfilled by one thing for the time being. I can move to something else if I want to later. I don't have to put pressure on myself to do everything all at once and your discussion of this really solidified this realization for me. so thank you!

I have friendship loneliness. I love my boyfriend but because I'm still new to the country I'm in I can't just go hangout with friends it's been a little more difficult to keep in touch and to make friends. You have to be very intentional with keeping friends because for me at least it easy to forget them until I need them. Which is honestly a little selfish.

I am really enjoying this format of podcasting and I Love Lana, so happy to see you both collabing. I wish I could be there to add my thoughts and experiences as a 35 yr old who is currently re-experiencing some of this. I can relate to Nate as well as Lana. Honestly I have learned so much from needing what Nate is looking for but instead of him on the constant move, I have dived deeper into myself through learning more about myself through things like Astrology. I have been studying it on my own leisure and I can't help to be curious what Nate and Lana's natal charts are because I think if Nate reached out to a great Astrologer, he could find some answers. It could be very validating to learn from it. Also I mean sometimes the deeper core part of what drives someone to accomplish more and more is the feeling if not feeling enough. it's like a double sided coin both beautiful to have that ability and desire to accomplish great things but also maybe slowing down enough to not identify as a accomplishing making machine. Diving deeper into our subconscious fears is a journey and very courageous thing to do as well. just a different way to be a seeker, a traveler, a courageous and hard working person or whatever. Great episode! I needed to hear this today!

Yeah loneliness is a very tricky feeling, i found the exploration of it here fascinating. I think, however, it's possible to shift your focus from the feeling into being appreciative of what you have/your surroundings. Focus on your passion and it could be a good idea to find either local groups or online groups of people interested in the same thing to build some deeper connections, because it's the deeper ones that will satisfy the desire for connection.

Welcome to Sweden! Discussing loneliness here is both bold and completely natural. We are raised to be individuals here, like islands. To walk away from loneliness despite it being ever-present. I think there are many conversations to be had about the mentality of scandinavians. I often touch on these topics with my international friends and there are both similarities and big differences in the way we were raised. I'll leave you with a quote from a famous swedish author, Hjalmar Söderberg (from the book/play Doctor Glas), maybe you've come accross it before: “People want to be loved; failing that admired; failing that feared; failing that hated and despised. They want to evoke some sort of sentiment. The soul shudders before oblivion and seeks connection at any price.” Enjoy your stay! I can recommend Uppsala if you ever get sick of Stockholm.

This was a great conversation since I believe that a lot of 20-30yr olds genuinely feel this way. But also hearing this out loud, makes it sound incredibly self centered and first world problems at a level. Yes we are looking for “growth” but it sounds like two people who have the luxury of doing exactly what they want and feeling bad about not having deep friendships while at the same time outgrowing people who are not as “curious” or have the lust for life as they claim to have. I would have liked if that was acknowledged. Because I think this is purely a rich millennial problem. Woe is me I get to travel and do exactly what I want and I don’t have what I think is meaningful connection because I get bored with people. I don’t think meaningful connection can be achieved if we keep outgrowing people. Although this is true in cases where interests diverge, I think it should be emphasized that it’s important to sometimes just be friends with people for the joy of watching them become something else. Everyone doesnt have to be evaluated through the lens of how can they contribute to my growth or how I can benefit them. One of the great joys of friendship is to just exist in company with no agenda. And you may outgrow them for a time and then reconnect back with a new vigor. And I think that’s how deep friendships are actually formed over many years.

Lana seems to be confronted with herself when she is being stimulated. the coin is about confronting the unsettling parts of ourselfs.

this is very true, im not sure why you haven’t got more likes! i think different situations makes each persons vulnerability to be exposed to themselves, so it’s about finding what situations do that, and then doing those things more

I think you’d really enjoy a book “Flow” by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. You’re talking about a lot of things in this conversation that he is touching upon already in first chapters. For example: the difference between pleasure and enjoyment and why enjoyment makes us feel happier.

Guys you are very young, just chill. Listen to Ester Perel about in-depth stuff. Don't get indoctrinated and pressured by society and what society asks of us to do. Definitely, the life truth is that you can only have 1 to max 3 best friends, large groups are good time friends and not necessarily people who will dig deep with you when things really get thought. There is no longer a feeling then when you are surrounded by the wrong people or in the wrong relationship. Stay true to yourself and always listen to your heart, be on your own journey and try not to hurt others along the way.

This seemed like a very typical conversation between an ENFP (Nathan) and INFJ (Lana). Did you guys take the test? 😅

their differences are very puntual with their mbti types. The need/want for spontaneity that Nathaniel portrays I believe has a lot to do with the I(NF)J vs Lana I(ST)J

I didn't want to be intrusive, but I think they should definitely date. I mean there's chemestry, also they described each other when they were talking about what they're looking for in a romantic partner. C'man they should give it a shot.

@nathaniel.. u need more acceptance and good enough mindset like lana… not always shoot for perfection and greed to explore everything. I have been through that, just accept and listen to that , sit with that feeling. It might point to something else deeper. U need shift in perspective that it is not the only way to be content.

They talk both so openly about loneliness but don’t even mention or ask or inquire if they’re helping alleviate that loneliness, If they want to be friends, if what they’re doing in that very moment is how they address loneliness and explore it more..?
