I think that Altman was suggesting AGI could be framed in terms of ability to perform all economically valuable cognative tasks (so, not requiring physical work; but, of course, it's all a matter of definition at this point, with several alternative definitions that have been floated).

Great critique! Life has a small area of clear objectives, we all know this! I find this every day when I use FSD: getting to destination comfortably, faster, without interfering with other drivers, etc. as humans we have an infinite number of desires but reality forces us to compromise. The terms of this are different for each other! We most of the time select things we didn’t like at the end. Let’s go back to the first question: who am I?

Definitely. And as a matter of fact, people every day make choices where the goal is not only fuzzy, but completely undefinable. They themselves would not be able to define it. They will just "know it when they see it." This is a Platonic problem and my guess is that it is not solvable. Western philosophy hasn't, after 2500 years. And since AI has and will ever have the disadvantage of not being embodied, it will be limited to the kinds of problems you regard as simpler. There is no living being, down to a bacterium, that is indifferent to its own existence; whereas every day I shut down my computer, to which it has no aversion.

I don't agree with what you are saying about ARC. The ARC challenge gives you a very small amount of data points to infer the objective function, it only has 800 examples between the training and validation sets. You can't do simulation to generate training signal either, so no alpha go style approach is valid here. The test set is private with only 100 tests and according to them they are substantially different from the ones on the public set, so the usefulness of synthetic data will be limited, the whole point of ARC is to demonstrate superior generalization. The model is supposed to be able to do pretty big generalizations at test time to beat it. o3 is able to do it because after training it leverages it's prior knowledge about the world and about the ARC-AGI public dataset to generate many different chains of though that iterativelly explore the space of solutions until it finds one that works, if I understood it well it does a kind of tree search over these chains of thought, similar to alpha go but without needing a simulation.
