The first ODR-1 had different potentiometer characteristics than the later versions. We had changed the manufacturer of the pots because the quality was not great. This means that a direct comparison of the line positions is not possible. Nevertheless, both versions can make the same sounds - only the pot positions are a bit different ;-)

That was a really good demo. I love the way you explain things and it's fantastic to see someone not only talk about, but demonstrate how component variance plays in to things. So many folks, even high profile demo guys are lead by expectations of the visual positions of knobs rather than tweaking by ear and many products get either misrepresented or discounted because of it. I've had a few vintage ODR1's & they vary a LOT. Most versions are pretty great sounding. The only issue is that the build quality isn't great which is why you see a lot of the ODR1s rehoused. I actually have an XTS Imperial which is basically a really well built ODR from a company that does a lot of the Nashville rehousings for folks there.
@thepedalzone4 жыл бұрын
Thanks, man! I'm really happy to hear you enjoyed the demo. Yeah component tolerance can play a massive role. I was surprised for sure. But it was easy to obtain the same sounds once you took the visual aspects out of the equation 😊 I don't know about the old ODR-1s, but my new ODR-1 BC feels built like a tank. I'm definitely not nervous about putting that on a board and gig with it.

My pleasure, man! I'm really happy you enjoyed it. Bot the Mini and the BC are great. You of course get the Bass Cut switch in the BC version, which the Mini doesn't have. Nobels ODR-1, especially the modern reissues with basscut, is one of the most hyped pedal available today. It was an alright pedal made in South Korea back in 90s, and there're literally, tons of other pedals to do what it does. Tim Pierce is a great guitarist but just like any other established pro-youtuber performers, his thoughts and verdicts on some instruments, if not everything he mentions, are really biased and personal. And for those looking for less-drive and more booster related usage, remember ODR-1 prefers single coil guitars and mid forward amps such as Marshall. Those booster seekers for higain amps such as Mesa rectifiers, they may not find ODR-1 works for their setups.

I just picked up the mini. It’s along the lines of what I expected it to be. I grabbed it with the intentions of using it for a secondary drive sound on my recordings where I currently use a Moog MF Drive. For high gain sounds it really isn’t great especially with humbuckers, it has too much low end which puts it into fuzz territory so get the bass cut version if that’s what you’re looking for. However, it shines for octaves, lead lines and low gain sounds. With bass it really sounds good. I have a Charvel PJ IV which has a built in preamp, if I turn the active circuit off and run the odr with a little gain, spectrum cranked and output cranked it really gives the bass a good modern overdriven tone along the lines of periphery and other modern metal (djent) bands which is perfect for my music. So far out of the many overdrives I’ve found it will be staying on my board where they usually don’t last long. My Moog so far has been the sound I always gravitate back too and never get bored with. Overall if you’re looking for a great overdrive pedal the Nobels is a great buy, get the bass cut version if you’re looking to overdrive humbuckers or run high gain and also I always add, if you can get your hands on a Moog MF Drive do it you WILL be able to find a sound in it for you. It does a perfect clean boost, it has A LOT of gain on tap so it can do a variety of amp sounds, it has a switchable cutoff filter and with paired with an expression pedal can do a really neat dirty wah, it’s capable of a variety of fuzz sounds and it works great on guitar and bass. Hands down the best money I’ve spent on guitar gear thus far and I’ve spent A LOT on guitar/bass gear over the years.

Just got my first ODR styled pedal last week and I am such a fan. Was able to finally snag a Browne Amplification Protein with an ODR style side and a bluesbreaker-esque side. I always thought before that the ODR was just a different style of the TS styled pedals, but it's honestly so different. While it can accomplish all the things I've used the green pedals for, it does them in such a way where I don't have all the gripes I usually do. The diodes in the feedback loop of the op amp deliver soft clipping, the diodes to ground offer hard clipping.

Awesome! Thanks for clearing that up

I had one of these and liked it but not quite enough. I had no idea there was a bass cut switch in there. Listening closely to this, it sounds like the guy who had it before me must have turned it on.

7:08 - Actually, the Ibanez TS has a symmetrical clipping circuit vs the Boss SD-1 which has an asymmetrical clipping gain circuit.
@Sushi_Dinner3 жыл бұрын
Not only component drift, pot tapers could also be different. This is probably why guys like Guthrie Trapp say they prefer the "lower gain of the original vs the new".

The ODR1 hasn't been a secret for well over 15 years now. In fact, its one of the more reviewed ODs on YT in the past 5 years.

I honestly think it’s nice it’s getting attention. It’s a great pedal. Like I said in the beginning of the video “... this pedal is very popular in certain circles. I just rarely see it in the musical circles I move around in”. So this video was about introducing this pedal to my followers, which mainly move within the indie/math-rock/post-rock genres 😊👍

Tempted to get one! They do sell it for cheap. But I wonder how it compares against the mighty Timmy...
@elektronautno4 жыл бұрын
It knocked the Timmy off my board (and I really like the Timmy). I found the ODR-1 has a bit more high end sparkle, but you have more control over the lows on a Timmy.
@thepedalzone4 жыл бұрын
I've never tried a Timmy actually, so can't say.

The old one is over 30 years old and electrical components will invariably deteriorate over time; resistors and capacitors will drift in value and this will result in variations of sound characteristics, sometimes very subtle and sometimes very noticable, but it's always present with older gear and I think goes a long way to explaining the 'vintage mojo' that some old gear seems to possess. Whilst I agree they sound subtly different, neither of them sounded better than one or the other in my opinion. To my ears, the old one sounds brighter with perhaps a little more presence in the mid-range, but nothing that playing with the spectrum knob on the new one couldn't approximate. Good comparison! Just as a personal anecdote for anyone wanting to purchase an ODR-1 - I've owned 2 of the BC models and they both sounded different. The first one I had sounded very compressed and seemed to roll off a lot more of my guitar's natural high frequencies. The one I currently own sounds much different. The spectrum knob really opens up the high-end when pushed past 5 and the sound is nowhere near as compressed. Both sounded great, but both were different!

Have you ever heard of using a crossover for two overdrives to fit the low notes & the high notes?
@thepedalzone3 жыл бұрын
Yes. I have a demo of the KMA Audio Machines Tyler on my channel, and that's exactly what it does. Parallel frequency splitting. Great for applying different distorted flavors to your highs and lows, or as a clean blend for your low frequencies or as a unique sound design tool. Highly recommend it.

I had no idea about the bass cut on the reissue odr-1. I opened my battery compartment, and I swear mine does not have it .
@thepedalzone4 жыл бұрын
The version with the bass cut is completely new. They released it at NAMM this year. The model name is ODR-1 BC. So if your ODR-1 doesn't have it, then it's not the new Bass Cut version 😊

Great video! Does anybody know if you can run this pedal using a standard 9v adapter, or do you need to use an 18v adapter?
@thepedalzone4 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much! You can easily run it on standard 9v. That’s what I’m doing in this video. It just accommodates up to 18v for extra headroom, if you want that

Hey Stefan. Your videos are fantastic and my go to when deciding on a new pedal. Keep up the great work buddy. On another note, have you ever listened to the band American Football..? A lot of your playing and pieces remind me of them. They're a killer band worth checking out. Cheers
