I don’t think it’s because of physique inflation. I think it’s more about the fact that almost anyone can achieve a six pack with a certain amount of diet/cardio, and on top of that it’s more temporary. Building a good bit of muscle has more staying power. On top of that, you’ll look better when your lean. Last, you gotta have some performance capability. You gotta be able to do some things that are unique, whether it’s on the calisthenics side of things, or just having some big lifts.

Let's be honest here, 6-pack is just for bodybuilders for showing off low body fat%. It doesn't mean their core is strong. As a runner and a cyclist, I have stronger abs than 99% of bodybuilders even though my body fat is in a higher, healthier, more practical range around 10-18% depending on the season. When you do cardio with good form you are always engaging and bracing your core to keep yourself in an aerodynamic position (cycling) or in a very upright and efficient posture (running). When you train for long distance endurance sports like cycling, running, swimming, etc. your body gets used to storing extra fat for times when you run out of carbs and need fat for fuel. This excess fat is a good thing because it is majority brown fat (healthy fat) and not visceral fat (unhealthy fat).
