This apartment is unlike anything else because its in a part of town that never has any rentals, NYC’s industrial zone by Long Island City. The area isnt what you’d expect when moving to New York, but I think its really cool and there are little cafes and restaurants popping up by the train which takes you into Manhattan in Just 10 Minutes. The place is also the entire Floor of the building.

@@aburks4life Its way to expensive nowadays. its the only reason why I left NYC and now reside in texas. I was living in the bronx and paying 1450 for a 500 square foot one bedroom apartment that had issues. the building superintendent was nonexistent and the landlord took his time to take care of work orders for the building. Parking is nearly nonexistent in NYC as well. Here in Texas, I pay 1200 for a 3 bedroom 2 bath 1200 square foot apartment and have a designated parking space. a 2 bed 1 bath will run you a grand. NYC as a whole is going back in time to the 80's where gun violence was extreme and rampant much like today. I was born and raised in the lower East Side and it breaks my heart that I had to leave NYC.

I used to work at citifield as a bomb dog handler a couple of years back. I wouldve have loved to live in the industrial area in Long Island City if they had a one bedroom apartment with a reasonable monthly rent. its rare to find a place like that anywhere in NYC. The only places you probably can find a one bedroom apartment is probably a basement apartment in Queens somewhere (whitestone, astoria, flushing).

It looks like an old converted office. I'd live there over one of those grey and white box apartments that could be anywhere from Dubuque to Dubai. It's quirky, but the price is good and so is the commute. It beats that 3 bedroom yesterday that had closets so narrow that you couldn't even use them.

It's interesting how the concept of a "view" and what makes a good neighborhood differ from place to place. For me, a view is looking out and seeing nobody else - just trees, grass, and no buildings. I would go insane living in a city with so many restaurants, people, and traffic. I'd feel claustrophobic. Yet, I bet people in the areas these apartments are in would think I live in a much too quiet, remote, scary place. LOL

It shows the differences in locations and prices, and to me the respect some areas have for older locations by just not tearing them down to modernize the area. History in how it looks and been changed for our time. Plus the so big difference in cost of living. It not only makes you see what the beauty of the city is and the Ins and outs, but the economic situation to live there, (plus the areas commuting issues). I have rented such apartments, in such neighborhoods, for the low price, of course, and then upgraded the unit at my own expense. Typically parking is easy in such neighborhoods, but I’d only buy/park a junker since vandalism and theft is also an assumed cost. As for a deadbolt, they aren’t expensive or difficult to install. The bigger issues are landlord approval for modifications and personal security in a city that is notoriously hostile to people having any legal right to self defense.

I used to live there, the half basement (illegal!) of one of the few residential buildings in the area. This was in the 1980’s and early ‘90’s, before LIC became trendy. It had a very strange layout, not intended for an apartment. The only rooms that were “obvious” as to purpose were the kitchen and bathroom. Nothing new or even nice so far as appliances, paint, floor. There were three high half windows in front. You looked up and saw the trash cans. The back room had three huge windows and a door with access onto a cracked, cement patio and weed-strewn weathered stockade fenced-in back yard with a scraggly locust tree. The bathroom was minuscule, a “wet bath,” tiled top to bottom with shower head at chest height on me; I’m 5’5.” The kitchen consisted of a truly vintage refrigerator, motor on top, a skinny stove, three burners front to back, built in skillet beside it, and oven without a pilot light. You had to use matches to light everything! It had a large, single deep sink with double hinged, accordion type cover. Lighting consisted of bare bulbs dangling from the ceiling. The walls and floor were disgusting, greasy, yellowing, chipping paint, and ugly brown and green chipped tiles on top of three layers of linoleum, beneath which was cement. But there were five rooms not counting the bathroom, a long skinny hallway. The rooms had antique doors with antique crystal doorknobs. The sink was vintage 1900ish. All mine for $95 month including gas and electric! All it needed was A LOT of work! I started by cleaning the front room and bathroom and lived in there for two months until the rest could be at least cleaned. The roach problem was solved fairly easily. The source was the trash cans which I convinced the landlord to move to the opposite side of the stairs where there was no apartment. He was worried someone might see in, that there was an apartment, so I tinted window decals for a car, cut them to size, and problem solved. I could see out; nobody could see in. Eventually, I got some friends to help. We painted, polished, scrubbed, enameled, installed ceiling or dangling lights, stripped off the tiles which proved to be dark blue and a very pale green! Large portions of the linoleum were in good shape, so I left a lot of it, strategically using furniture (from the street, my grandmother’s old apartment, used stores) to cover worn areas. The bathroom got two curtains on tension rods, one to separate the shower area and another to give the entire room a door! A small, plastic child’s school chair to make hair washing easier, a shower hose, and plastic shelves for linens behind a privacy screen in the hall finished it off. Heat was never a problem since it had steam radiators minus the safety/conservation valves. The furnace was behind the hall wall, a bit noisy, but it didn’t bother me. In fact, being half basement facing the street kept things remarkably quiet despite the numerous industries going on. The patio, or what remained of it, was broken into cement chunks and I built a raised flower bed for marigolds. A lot of work with a borrowed push mower gave the weeds a semblance of lawn. It looked better after some of the grass came up. A few years, I grew tomatoes, beans, and leaf lettuce. A pair of lawn chairs, a table, and two beach umbrellas made it nice in summer. It was never anything but a poor person’s apartment, but it was cozy and comfortable. Two years after I moved out, the top floor burned and the building razed. Too bad! Fixed up and made legal, that place would probably get $5,000 today!

Marie Katherine, The most bizarre aspect about Long Island City, no one and I mean, *no one* would dare walk around certain industrial parts of that neighborhood before gentrification. The flyovers and 'professionals' now tripping over each other to live in LIC, mostly because of the amazing skyline views and it's closeness to Manhattan, would not have ever attempted to live in LIC in the 1960s, 70s and even 80s! What's sad, the original residents, who were mostly working class and lower middle class, the residents who lived through the harassing hookers at Queens Plaza, the crime and other nonsense, are the people now being pushed out of their old neighborhood by the outrageous rents and the absurd real estate taxes for those who bought low. All these long time residents and 'old timers' are the ones who made the neighborhood livable. The Yuppies and wealthy flyovers haven't a clue about Long Island City and it's slow long road to gentrification. *The $10,000 a month LIC rental luxury apartment Cash showed awhile back was absolutely laughable!*

I'll assume that this is within a ten-minute walk to the train, but is there laundry anywhere close by? The small living and dining areas have no windows, and I'm guessing that you go through the narrow kitchen to get to the bathroom. Seattle used to have a neighborhood that looked like this one. It was an older mixed residential and light industrial in the South Lake Union area. It is pretty much gone, the victim of redevelopment. South Lake Union was home to blue collar workers until redevelopment began in the 1990s. There is a stubborn reminder of what the neighborhood looked like. When driving toward downtown Seattle you can catch a glimpse of a lovely Orthodox Christian church, onion top spires and all surrounded by new big box apartment buildings.

Years ago I moved into an apartment with a wardrobe in the bedroom. About a year later I had a problem with bedbugs. I was getting bitten all over my body, and some were quite large and lumpy. One day after trying to save the wardrobe because it was falling apart on me, and I couldn't afford another, I threw it away. A couple of days later I noticed the bedbug problem had ceased, and no more bites. The bedbugs were hiding in the wardrobe. I vowed to never buy another wardrobe after that experience, and I never did. Yeah, that landlord has to get rid of that wardrobe.
@Spilledperfume1
@Spilledperfume1 2 жыл бұрын
A new wardrobe that you bought for yourself wouldn’t have that problem. It’s the fact that it was there when you moved in. Years ago someone gave my sister a table for her apt that they no longer needed but didn’t want to throw away. A few days later she started to see bugs in her apt. She threw out the table & got rid of the bugs. Apparently the friend had an issue with bugs in her old apt & didn’t think to mention it to my sister.

I really like this little apartment. I wished the rents would come down tho. Soon, no one is going to be able to live inside. But still, I like this place. It's cute and vintage. But I'm claustrophobic so I'm wondering how long I could make this work? No grocery stores nearby isn't a problem as long as Amazon Fresh is available. Houston, we have a problem. There is only one little closet (with the up top space for a suitcase) in the entire apartment. Now, it is cheap enough to afford it on your own and then make one of the bedrooms a walk in closet. The kitchen is fine for me, I don't use it anyway..lol. I like the fancy building across the street with the restaurants on the lower floor. Since I did not see a place for laundry or a bong store, I am disheartened. I like the squirrel and the possibility of putting a painting on the living room wall to add pizzazz!!! LOL!! Thanks for the video....xoxo

I grew up in that section of Queens and its crazy to see how much it has changed since I was a kid. I remember riding the bus to school in Astoria and Long Island City back in the early-mid 2000s. I left in 2007 and moved back briefly in 2014 for college and left again in 2015. It does bring back memories, but I wouldn't live there now especially with the city being way to expensive and the crime being through the roof.

I love when people use inflammatory titles to describe our city. NY has millions of people that means someone lives and is willing to live in every corner of it. There is no setup we haven’t seen. The annoying railroads where you walk through every room in your house to get to the front door. Or the tiny bathrooms with a shower over a toilet. I saw a makeshift loft in LIC btw, that you step in through the front door and are immediately in a kitchen with just a sink across from a fridge, and then maybe 6 ft away was a loft bed up in the ceiling with a ladder leading to it. People are willing to live all kinds of ways to live alone and be able to afford it.

I'm Bulgarian. And whether I watch you or Enes Yilmazer, American homes seem to lack the room that I find super important - the hall. That's where you walk into your house/flat, take your shoes off, leave your coat, collect yourself, and choose a room to walk into. In my world, the fact that someone can open one door and walk from the living room straight into my bedroom feels like lack of privacy. My room is my fortress. And so is the toilet. I wanna use the toilet when I'm two doors away from other people, not one.
