Today’s song… what can I say? There’s just nothing else like it. I mean it’s dark, it’s moody, it’s theatrical rock. Listening to it takes you on a heart-pounding sonic journey deep into the shadows and then back into the light. Total Eclipse of the Heart by Bonnie Tyler written and produced by the great Jim Steinman is epic in size and scope. The 1983 #1 hit is punctuated by a raspy, larger-than-life vocal performance from Bonnie Tyler who lost her voice some years before and had take throat surgery not knowing if she’d ever sing again.. she also had a huge hit that typecast her as a soft country rock balladeer… then she got a chance at singing a 7-minute song about Vampire love that would go onto become one of the biggest #1 hits ever…but it pissed Jim Steinman’s other constant collaborator Meatloaf off who felt the song was his for the taking… It’s a compelling story of a song that still moves the needle coming up next.

Hey music junkies, Professor of Rock, always here to celebrate the greatest artists and the greatest songs of all time. it you remember when you had to rewind or fast forward for several minutes on your walkman to try and hear the next song instead of clicking a button that takes a millisecond… subscribe below right now. You’ll dig this channel of nostalgic interviews and song stories. We also have a Patreon you'll want to check out, where you’ll get full interviews and special features.
So it’s time for another edition of our series The New Standards. This show takes an in-depth look into songs that transcend genre, decade, and fads - songs that are monumental touchstones in our culture and society. On previous episodes, we have covered Careless Whisper by George Michael slash Wham, Time After Time by Cyndi Lauper, and Don’t Stop Believin’ by Journey.
But today we are breaking down a big-time hit from 1983. A song that not only ruled the charts but captured the souls of audiences everywhere… It's the #1 hit, Total Eclipse of the Heart by Bonnie Tyler from her fifth studio album Faster Than the Speed of Night.
Bonnie Tyler, born Gaynor Hopkins in South Wales, grew up listening to the music of Janis Joplin and Tina Turner. At the age of 17, she answered a newspaper ad for backup singers at a local club and began singing almost daily in Welsh clubs and pubs from then on. From the get-go, Tyler had a naturally bluesy and raspy voice. However, her six-night-a-week regiment as a club singer led to her developing nodules on her vocal cords. So in 1976, she underwent throat surgery. It was a success. And after a four-month recovery, her voice came back stronger and more like Rod Stewart than ever.

Although I was firmly entrenched in "hair bands" in the 80's, I did own this album and would play this song often when my buddies weren't around. One day, one of my friends came over unannounced and my mom let him in. He walked in on me jamming the song while belting out the lyrics into a broom handle. Without missing a beat, using a flashlight as a microphone, he seamlessly busted in with the backup vocals. Good times!

This was my wife's and I song when we first started going out together. I enlisted in the Army, and while I was away, I heard this song on the radio. I wrote her and told her that I thought about us every time I heard it. She heard the song and from that moment on it became our song. Now, every time we hear the song, we remember the pain of being apart, and we kiss. We've been married now for 36 years.

My 25-ish daughter and I were sitting in a local biker dive bar on a week-night, debating where to go next because none of our friends had shown up, and the jam of local bands was cancelled due to weather issues. Everyone was lost in their own conversations, but suddenly, Total Eclipse of The Heart came on the jukebox. Before the first verse was finished, every person was singing. Bartenders, bikers, bouncers, strays that wandered in looking for a quick beer, and my daughter and I, all singing our hearts out. Arms were wrapped around total strangers, people swaying to the music. As the last notes faded away, everyone seemed to come out of the spell that Bonnie had woven, and they resumed their conversations as if Total Eclipse had never swept them away. One of my favorite memories.

How the heck can this song be 40 years old this year? It feels like only yesterday I heard it for the first time. It's beautiful, unnerving and totally iconic and nobody will ever sing it like Bonnie in my opinion (yes, I'm old enough to remember it being released and seeing the video on "Top Of The Pops", which I was an avid fan of when I was in Comprehensive school). Even though I loved Meatloaf too I'm actually so glad that it was Bonnie Tyler that sang this song - it just wouldn't have meant the same if Meatloaf did it and it wouldn't have anywhere near the same feeling and intent.

When you hear an epic, powerful song with moments of quiet solitude, it's possible that it was written and composed by Jim Steinman, who also wrote many Broadway show tunes.

This brought back memories of me sitting by my tape deck stereo, listening to the radio with my hand hovering over the "record" button so that I could capture this song. I was 13 and didn't have money to buy the album or single, so the radio was all I had, and I would absolutely RAGE when the DJs would talk over the end of the song, their voices maring those last plaintive notes of "turn around bright eyes, turn around," with just the piano and the sound of the wind. I can't remember how many times I actually yelled at my stereo, "Shut UP, the song isn't over yet! ARGHHH!" Good times. :D

In 1983, I was 16 years old. I was just starting to emerge from a shell of shyness, and I fell in love with Bonnie Tyler and A Total Eclipse of the Heart. At the time I thought she was a beacon of beauty and class. I couldn't get enough of this song. Jim Steinman was a genius. A true maestro. Every composition of his has so many layers of special sauce. (I'm actually a theatrical composer.) Every chord change, every leading tone he'd set up, he'd knock it down with unexpected intensity. Just once before I die I wish I could compose something that had the quality he put into every composition. My favorite rock composer. RIP Maestro.

In my mind, this will always remain the the song I shared with my girlfriend in my senior year of high school. It highlighted the timing a lot of critical decisions and changes in my life, and in many ways, the emergence of the person I would go on through life as. I can't hear it today without being taken back to that time, and recalling the conflicting forces and emotions that would shape my future. It wasn't all good... nor was it all bad, but I can't listen to this song without a certain recollection of the heartbreak and tumultuous times that it marked in my life.

Rider, it was cool to hear your perspective on the song. I was four when it came out, and grew up singing it in the car on road trips. I never understood the melancholy until I was older. The song that was for me what total eclipse for you was, and I’m not proud of it, Marilyn Manson’s Tourniquet. Oddly enough, it conveys similar emotions, but delivered with a jaded cynicism.

Well, DUH!!! I have only heard 2 other vocalists in my 60 years on this planet that can match Ms. Tyler or even exceed her range and power of the pipes! Care to guess whom those 2 would be???? Here is a hint. M. C. And M. R. Go!

Total Eclipse is also the centerpiece of Jim Steinman’s musical “Dance of the Vampires” which is a huge hit in Germany (Tanz Der Vampire). Meat Loaf sang part of Total Eclipse (Turn Around Bright Eyes) plus other songs from Tanz der Vampire on his last album Braver Than We Are.

Brother, Casey Kasem was certainly a legend with his show American Countdown. The little tidbits we'd get of songs and the long distance requests were always something to look forward to on Sunday's. You might not be doing a countdown, but I love the deep rich backstory of the songs and bands you do, and all the great guests you get on your show to interview. You, in my opinion, will go down as a legend for the media age we live in today, that gives life back to the music I grew up with.

MASSIVE JIM STEINMAN FAN! I love how you do your homework on these videos and talk about more than just the singer and the charts, but also the life of the song, the writers and producers, the tours, the videos, and anything else you can think of. One item you missed is that Jim had a tendency to recycle melodies throughout his career. You caught the one how the melody for Total Eclipse was originally used in his college musical, The Dream Engine, from 1969. But he also used the song in his 1997 musical, Tanz der Vampire, which was originally produced in Germany and directed by Roman Polanski. It's evidence that Total Eclipse was always about vampire sex, where, in the original production, Count von Krolock (played by the late great Steve Barton) seduces Sarah (Cordelia Zenz). The musical rivals Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera in terms of bringing to life a 19th Century horror story, but it's more gothic, more sensual, and as with anything Jim ever did, more over the top. The American version flopped because producers insisted on getting a big name, and that big name was Michael Crawford, who insisted on making it funnier (Mel Brooks' The Producers was the big thing on Broadway at the time, and Crawford insisted on putting a joke or two into every page of the script, ruining Steinman's gorgeous masterpiece). As for the song, the repeated "every now and then" in the Tyler version is replaced with "Manchmal in der Nacht" (sometimes at night), but the translation of the lyrics reflects the exact same spirit as the song did in 1983. Another fantastic video. I watch every day!

It’s true the first cut is the deepest & this one cuts deep. I think I can speak for all the 9yr olds at the time, when I say Total Eclipse coupled with Out of Nothing at All, and then Time after Time, were too much for us and they left a mark. I remember hearing them every night on the clock radio thanks to my now deceased, older brother who slept on the bottom bunk. The song claimed it’s rightful title as Greatest Ballad of all time & has been undisputed champ ever since. . Thanks for going deep on this one.

Wow it was about vampires in love, I'd never have guessed that, but damn she powered that song like a lightning bolt, the music and her singing it, is what created a massive monster hit that still rocks in 2023.

This will always, always be one of my favorite songs. It's so HAUNTING. The video is utterly bonkers 😅 but the song itself, damn. Doesn't get any better, no matter what decade we are in.

This song came out during my senior year in high school. I still remember crying my eyes out & playing it over and over after a breakup with my boyfriend. Heck, a year later while in college, me & my friends in the dorm still blasted it through the halls occasionally - usually when someone else was dealing with heartache. Every time I hear it, it's like I'm transported to almost 40 years ago - seeing my 18 year old self back in my bedroom distraught over losing my boyfriend. Her voice and the whole song just goes through my whole body. It's so intense. Thanks for the great details on this song, Bonnie Tyler and the writer Jim Steinman too. P. S. My Sony Walkman, that I used from 1983 to 1987 while at Purdue, was the best thing to listen to music while trekking across campus. Kind of wish I had kept it!

Bonnie is powerful when she hits the high notes, but when she goes low in that final chorus and sings, "Nothin' I can do," it sends a chill down my spine.

I have always loved Bonnie Tyler. That voice just tears at you as you listen, communicating pain, pathos, passion and longing. She truly made Total Eclipse what it is. Nobody will ever come close to what she did with the song. I liken her to the Joplin of the 80’s. It’s that same driving raw passion in both voices.

I remember this song. Bonnie Tyler killed it- she had such a powerful voice. Didn't know about the song's background until now.
