Most surgeries that can be performed on humans can be performed on other animals. Putting them under tends to be more dangerous because humans are generally better at surviving trauma, but if it's important enough to one's health or quality of life, it's totally worth it.

I can relate to this pup! I was the youngest in a large family in the 50's and could see nothing but a blur of colors, unless something was within a few inches of my face. I had no idea of how I was supposed to be seeing, so never complained (I was just considered to be a klutz). It was my 5th grade teacher who figured it out, after we had a math test, and the problems had been written on the board. I got every one of them wrong (I used to pull at the sides of my eyes to try to see), but my homework was always correct. He noticed that the problems were written down wrong. I remember the eye doctor, after the exam, telling my mother it was a wonder I was never hit by a car, as I couldn't see one coming (I couldn't even see the big "E" on the chart, just a blur of white). I will never forget the day I got my glasses, the beginning of November 1963, when I got 20/20 sight! It was and will always be the happiest day of my life. Kudos to everyone that helped this pup see again!

quite a few years ago now, our husky / Kelpie cros, Mitzi, went diabetic, she was around 10 at the time. After a few months she developed diabetic catarachs and was blind. We took her to the Vet teaching hospital in Columbia Missouri, and they said they could put new lenses in, she would be able to see again! At the time it cost 3k, which for us was a lot, she was there for a week including surgery, and the day we went to pick her up was the best day of my life! We took her best mate, our Smithfield Kelpie Jess, and Mitzi walked into the room and went straight to Jess, my wife and i were bawling our eyes out, the surgeon, doctors and nurses all starting crying, it was just such a great feeling. Mitzi lived to 16 years, we managed her diabeties, she got a full happy life. We don't always win, but when you do its sensational!

Maybe they couldn’t afford surgery for her and knew that if a rescue picked her up, they would raise money for her surgery? Maybe it was the ultimate love for her? So maybe they didn’t «dump» her, but rather gave her a chance to see again?

A lot of people hand over their pets so they can get treatment. It’s actually a good thing. I knew someone that had dropped their dog off because they had cancer that they couldn’t afford to treat. The shelter treated her cancer. It was either give her up or out her down, both options are hard the the owner

Anyway, cudos to all involved with Hazel's amazing recovery and now living her best life.

I used to view it the same way. then I realized that when people foster they are in a way like teachers, nurses, carers of elders, nanies. they help those in need, but they are meant to teach, help etc others as well. and even though each animal is unique, in a way it is not a one and only love, which makes it easier for both parties to deattach.

It took going to another animal ophthalmologist to find that a large blood clot left from the surgery had caused her eye pressure to go over 70, etc and after four weeks, the eye was removed by our kind family Vet. I am so glad to hear of all of your success. So glad I opted to correct only one of my dog's eyes at the time.
