That was a really useful video and cleared up quite a bit of my Fusion understanding. One thing I would mention is that it took me a while to understand the importance of making sure you are clicked in the right node for types of changes. I would see many tutors saying "just do this and adjust this" but without emphasising the importance of the right node being selected. Thanks again.

I think Vito would be mad if he ever saw your video since you are removing Confusion Some basic stuff about Fusion Select a node and press F1 to open the manual at the right page for that node, it works for almost every node, unfortunately the ones that this does not work for are usually the ones you will find almost no info online. On the node the white square is your output, triangles are input. The yellow triangle is the background, the green triangle is the foreground and the blue triangle is the mask, if you work with 3D there is a lot more colors. A node's output can be sent to multiple other nodes, you do not need to duplicate it, although sometimes duplicating it will make things easier. Try to keep your flow going one way, usually left to right or top to bottom, that is personal preference but it makes things easier, your flow can look like a spider web if you want. Also you can use nodes to write things on your flow. When playing back you can see the nodes working, if a node turns red you know something went wrong with that node specifically, now you just need to figure out the problem. Renaming nodes with F2 is important, most KZbinrs show you basic flows with a few nodes, but when you start having over 10 nodes things gets confusing if you have not renamed your nodes.

All very good tips. As you said, nodes arranged neatly so the composition can be easily understood later. Being an English speaker, a left-to-right layout is intuitive to me. I place my MediaIn to the left and the flow to the MediaOut to the right; anything that is merged is placed above the main flow, visually representing what is going on. Speakers of other languages who read and write right-to-left may find arranging their nodes the same way easier to follow. It is the connections between the nodes that is important. I also like to keep my flow tidy by right-clicking an empty area of the node editor and selecting both Arrange Tools > To Grid and Arrange Tools > To Connected. Sometimes your connections will go to the wrong input. When connecting, right-drag the output; when you release the button over the node to which you want to connect, a menu list of that node's inputs will appear; select the input you want. When you say "you can use nodes to write things on your flow" I think you're referring to a Sticky Note, which is a text field you can place in the editor to leave notes to yourself or a collaborator. Also there is a tool called Underlay, which is a bounding box you can use to group nodes to organize your flow. For example, if among other things you are replacing the sky in your composition, you can group those nodes with an Underlay, change its name to Sky_Replacement and color it blue to keep it separate from other nodes where perhaps you are compositing in various elements. One last thing, which I learned from Casey Faris: Each node does exactly one thing. This sounds basic and stupid, but it's important to remember for new users. Don't make Fusion more complicated than it has to be.

Don’t forget the little switches at the bottom left of each node that allow you to preview the output of each specific node to one of the two preview windows. Particularly handy when it gets more complex.

Yes, unless you are doing very precise detail work and need as large a window as possible, having the two windows is very beneficial. I usually have the current node (whatever effect I'm working on) in the left viewer and the final MediaOut in the right. If I need to reference the original media, say for masking, I'll sometimes have the original in the left viewer and the working node on the right. From the manual: To load specific nodes into specific viewers, do one of the following: - Hover the pointer over a node, and click one of two buttons that appear at the bottom-left of the node. - Click once to select a node, and press 1 (for the left viewer) or 2 (for the right viewer). - Right-click a node and choose View On > None/Left View/Right View in the contextual menu. - Right-click the control header of a node in the Inspector, and choose View On > None/Left View/ Right View from the contextual menu. - Drag a node and drop it over the viewer you’d like to load it into (this is great for tablet users)

Alex I love it! Fusion is so scary. I currently just do some little scribbles on adjustment clips to animate on videos, but now I see the logic a little more! Thank you, I requested a video like this in your community section. Great analogy! Finally Nodes make a bit of sense......though if I can do it in the edit page then I'm 100% doing it in the edit page. I'm a video editor but never mastered the graphics side of things. After Effects at least resembles an NLE so it's easier to navigate my way around it if I use 3rd party templates. Davinci fusion templates look like a messy orgy of transform nodes and media inputs leaving me very confused and tired. This makes lots of sense though. Thanks!

Nicely done! Next show something branching out in two directions and rejoining the flow (text with a reflection for instance). It's the equivalent of pre-comp'ing in After Effects but it's where the beauty of nodes make things much simpler! Congrats on the 126K 🔥🔥
