I have to confess, I was always calling myself "the enemy" at school, liking all the Modernist Soul and Rock'n'Roll revivalist bands, but didn't mind a bit of Goth, and ended up having a few Goth friends. Most of the friction at school, if any, to my mind, was based on anti-Thatcherism, denying wanting to let someone work, or some of my fellow Southerners being their own worst enemy. After growing up listening to mostly country music, big band and early 50's rock, I was introduced to ska in college in the early 90's. I still love it. Getting into ska is about as close as I came to 'rebelling' in college. I bought a bunch of ska CDs including this one. No Doubt was really awesome!
