Sweet Smell is my favorite Criterion so far. It has amazing night photography by James Wong Howe. Also some incredible one-liners delivered by Curtis and Lancaster.

Nice pick-ups. You got a lot of the essential noirs there. Two that are apart of the Criterion Collection that you didn't pick up here but should are Leave Her To Heaven, which is probably the greatest color noir ever made & the other being Moonrise which people often overlook in the collection but it's so goid, truly one of the great underrated noirs, it really deserves more eyes on it.

Great episode, with one of my favorite genres! Some little notes- -The Roaring Twenties is half noir/half fast-paced gangster film driven by Jimmy Cagney’s rat-a-tat-tat machine gun-style of talking. The guy was a former vaudeville tap dancer and it shows in how fast he can talk. Great film. -Ace in the Hole is definitely noir although it takes place during the day in an arid, desert area of the Southwest. One of my favorite endings in film. -Jules Dassin made the English-language films DJ mentions before being a victim of the Hollywood/McCarthy blacklist and heading off to France to make Raffifi. He then kept making films in Europe for the rest of his life, although some were English language films during this later period. Raffifi is half heist/half noir and all awesome. -Asphalt Jungle is similar to Riffifi and Kubrick’s The Killing. Monroe has a small but integral part as a femme fatale. - Gilda has one of my favorite Glenn Ford performances. Also, Hayworth’s song “Put the Blame on Mame” is dynamite. - Sweet Smell of Success and Ace in the Hole go really well with A Face in the Crowd. Curtis’ greatest performance IMO. Lancaster’s character is one of the coldest bastards in film. Pick this first. - Fury is a great choice. Just brutal. - Ministry of Fear has a great Ray Milland performance. - Kiss Me Deadly is one of the most batshit crazy noirs you’ll ever see. You will literally not know what is going to happen from moment to moment. Maybe save it for the end? - Gaslight is a great example of Victorian Noir. It’s where we get the slang term “gaslighting” from. - Eddie Muller is the head of the Film Noir Foundation which restored “High Tide.” - The Wrong Man is the most realistic Hitchcock and a great example of the rise of docu-realistic filmmaking in the fifties. Also, the only Hitchcock based on a true story. - High and Low is based on an Ed McBain 87th Precinct police procedural novel “King’s Ransom.” Great choice. - sorry for the lengthy comment but I love this genre so much.

Wow, Grace looks stunning in this video, like Veronica Lake in black and white. She has the timeless classic Hollywood noir look. You look like Chico Marx, I think it’s because the hat is too small.

Hi guys, nice video as always! If you read this comment I want to specify that the italian film in the radiance box set is not "Witness in the city", that is the french one. The italian one is "The facts of murder". Maybe the confusion is due to the fact that also in "Witness in the city" there are some italian actors", and curiously there is also an actor who is also one of the protagonists of "The facts of murder"!

Really entertaining video, DJ and Grace! I've seen all 20 of your selections except for "High Tide," which makes sense since it is the most obscure title. Based on your choices, you are in for a really fun month. There are already a lot of great comments from folks who beat me to the punch, but I will add a few things. "In a Lonely Place" is Eddie Muller's favorite film, and the backstory of director Ray and actress Gloria Grahame would make a crazy film noir itself (a case of truth being crazier than fiction). Also, Burt Lancaster's character in "Sweet Smell of Success" is based on the infamous New York City newspaper columnist Walter Winchell, who had the power to make or break careers. It's a great film. "The Breaking Point" comes from the same Hemingway source material as "To Have and Have Not" but is considered by some to be the better film. "Rififi" contains what just might be the greatest heist scene in movies. And director Jules Dassin was an American, so it's not pronounced as if he were French. He also was married to Melina Mercouri, who starred in "Topkapi." Rita Hayworth's real last name was Cansino, so she was actually a brunette who found fame as a redhead. I'm particularly fond of a little comedy called "The Strawberry Blonde" with Hayworth, Cagney and Olivia DeHavilland. It's available via Warner Archive, and I think you both would enjoy it. Happy viewing!

An interesting Joan Crawford noir double feature could be "Mildred Pierce" & "A Woman's Face". Also, "A Woman's Face" is another George Cukor noir.

Asphalt Jungle is amazing. Monroe is barely in it though. I didn't care for in a Lonely Place, it felt silly. Unfortunately, Gilda and The Lady from Shanghai are terrible and it's not because of Rita Hayworth. She's actually great. I would take a look at The Killing by Stanley Kubrick, Gun Crazy and The Big Combo by Joseph Lewis. All GREAT.

my 8 favorite noirs in no order are Vertigo, Kiss Me Deadly, Touch of Evil, Out of the Past, White Heat, The Lineup, The Night of the Hunter and Shoot the Piano Player. In a Lonely ;Place I know has its fans and Eddie Muller has it as his all time favorite noir but it would not even be in my top 35. I'm a director myself with one film that is heavily influenced by noir.

Every climax in a hall of mirrors (think Enter the Dragon and John Wick 2) owes a huge debt to Welles and Lady from Shanghai. Rita is spectacular and good contrast with Gilda. You’ll have so much fun with them. She sings in both films. Love it.

Super great picks for your noirvember selections. It's too hard to pick a favorite from your ten selections, I bet you two will also have a really tough time ranking favorites from those ten selections. My least favorite is RIFIFI and BTW, Dassin is American who emigrated to France during the McCarthy era. I've all the films mentioned except for one reserve WITNESS IN THE CITY which I never heard of. Word of Advice: May sure your version of TOUCH OF EVIL is the reconstructed version. Prior versions leave the majority of viewers confused. It is a great film. Good Noirvember to you both and have a drink or two from me with Eddie. BTW, Loved the B&W look and outfit or were you just still wearing your Noir Halloween Costume 😀

As you said, there are very few film noirs in the 60s,perhaps because it is so much associated with black and white photography ,although there was one very good one,Harper (1966) with Paul Newman and Lauren Bacall, and another late take on the genre is Robert Altman's The Long Goodbye (1973) .

I’ve seen Elevator to the Gallows, Rififi, High and Low, Maltese Falcon and Ace in the Hole. Maltese Falcon is the gold standard of Noir, but Elevator to the Gallows and High and Low are both incredible. I wouldn’t consider Ace in the Hole to be noir, but it’s a great movie too. Rififi is more of a heist film, but has elements of noir and is top-notch.
