I used to work on noise canceling hardware and algorithms as an electrical engineer, and your description is spot on. Without simplifying is further, you've described the full core principle. Maybe one additional thing I'd bring up is that these work best on actual "noise". These devices will do a much better job filtering wide-band noise of an AC, computer fans, even noise inside an airplane. Filtering out highly harmonic sounds, like the sounds of a human voice is generally much harder, and those sounds will not be attenuated just as much. That said, these algorithms get better by the year, and so does processing power. Thanks for the video.

I'm so glad you posted this video! I've have these headphones for two years, and they are indeed a blessing, because my air conditioning is the level of a jet engine. BUT the Logic DAW has huge latency with the headphones' bluetooth, making keyboard playing impossible, so I was resigned to never use them while composing. So I was surprised when you said you were using them while composing! As a result of this video, I tried to figure out how you were doing it, and thanks to my stupidity, I realized that I'd missed the fact that the headphones CAN be used without bluetooth, with a cable you can plug in. Just hooked it in, and now after two years I can compose with these things! Your video has helped tremendously! Thanks!

Yeah, there's definitely a lot of good options out there. These would probably be in the top 10 or so of current choices. A lot of it is also personal taste when it's solely about listening pleasure and not about mixing. In this price range you'll find great options across all major brands.

I know this video is already several months old but I just discovered your great channel. I also own the very same Sony headphones. The noise cancelling is indeed amazing but as you said they are not "neutral" in terms of sound and are on the "bassy"/"boomy" side. I just wished to say that - for the people who are using windows - you can use "EqualizerAPO" with its interface "Peace Equalizer" (free software), It features a couple of presets for these headphones and does a great job at making the sound much more balanced (I'm using the "Sony WH-1000MX4 - Oratory 1990" preset directly avalable for download from the software) It brings the Sony much more in line with my other headphones (Audio Technica ATH-M50x)

Hi Anne-Kathrin, you mentioned that noisy places make you angry? I'll bet many musos/artists are the same. I am. Been in studios/on stage since my mid teens. now 73. like you, I love silence/isolation. I think as one ages, this condition intensifies. I hate going out, even to shop, now. The noises out there are chaos to my hearing. some 50yrs "cloistered" in a studio really unprepares one for the hussle and bussle. If the place is too big, like a music/sport venue, I just will not enter it. If I'm mixing/mastering, I stay in, get food delivered and sleep a lot so my hearing is as top notch as it can be. I have about an hour b4 I lose my objectivity...........ANY hearing loss at my age, will delay finishing the project/s. cheers. j.

"The charging cable is a bit of a joke... Sony... Look at me..." --- I've noticed many BluTooth audio devices all provide an extremely short charging cable with the odd USB micro B connector that NOTHING ELSE uses. I have a Bushnell Wingman audio speaker with the incoming USB charge port at the top with a cord barely long enough to reach the table top surface of a nearby laptop to charge it. Maddening.

@Funky Monk Not sure what you mean but I don't have a single device that uses this very same charger cable (USB-C), not even my SONY camera (which uses yet another pretty random cable that is way too short). At the very least they could use a more common cable, then it would be less annoying.

Great review! Love your approach (also the very gentle battering on the developers, haha) here again! Interesting those extra gadgety functionalities of your Sony headphone. During watching I thought to myself: Sony couldn't have a better reviewer than you, sales will certainly soar:) Looking forward indeed to a new headphone that enables a flat producer sound to mix to in conjunction with the noise-cancelling. Music can tire me enormously sometimes. All depends on how tired I am or not. In the car for example, I usually do want to hear the sounds from my car (hoping no bumper accidentally falls off) and those of others. I have this idea that if I am driving a car with very loud music I am not so aware of how I drive. E.g.: when I turn up the volume for an energising song, I find myself stepping on the gas more than financially viable... (no realtime experience in this regard though, thankfully).

Would love for developers to get on that - noise cancelling plus good for mixing. I've only tried one noise isolating pair by Sennheiser that comes close but it's $2000 plus a headphone preamp, so not really financially viable for the average user.

Really like the 770s for tracking! However, when I switched to the 880s many years ago my mixes audibly improved and my ears relaxed a lot more due to the semi-open back design. Thanks for the info Anne. I have XM3 version and for years now they are what I prefer to listen to music on. For work calls I use the Bose NC700 because I find they are better for call quality and noise cancellation as it pertains to that particular use case...but for listening to music...the Sony's are better (especially in a noisy environment).

@AnneKathrinDernComposer 2 жыл бұрын
Interesting, I've seen a few comparison videos that mention this slight discrepancy as well, saying the SONYs have better sound quality but the Bose have better noise cancelling for phone calls, specifically on the mic. I haven't gotten to test the Bose on that aspect so I can't tell myself. Really happy with the call quality on the SONYs as well though - it filters out my air conditioning perfectly which is usually the only noise going on in the background when I make calls.

I always mix with closed back headphones. Audio Technica ATH-M50. They sound really good and I know them quite well. No noise reduction, but they are very practical. I also use metering and a spectrum analyzer when mixing so that provides me with additional visual information so I can get the mix right.

I'm sure they're great but generally I wouldn't recommend mixing on closed backs. Those are usually designed for tracking, open backs and semi-open backs are normally designed for mixing (and also much healthier for the ears long-term). Relying on your ears with the right tools would be better than relying on visual information (especially since the visualizations in a lot of plugins aren't 100% accurate) but I understand we all have to make compromises at some point. But if you're ever in the market for a new pair, I'd highly recommend getting an open back pair. When I switched from the Beyerdynamic 770s to the 880s many moons ago, my mixes audibly improved by a lot because so many things were audible and clean all of a sudden; things that I couldn't hear at all before on the closed backs. I've only ever tried out a few closed backs designed for mixing, but those were the expensive Sennheiser kind in the $2000 range with a proper preamp - but that's not really a good solution for most people (and unnecessary, they really didn't sound $1700 better than the cheaper models).

@@AnneKathrinDernComposer I have been recording and mixing since the mid 70s with monitors and a wide range of headphones including open backs (AKG, Sennheiser, and Grado models). Open backs are nice but are typically bass shy compared to closed backs and are not useful as I often mix in a noisy environment. YMMV. Currently, I really enjoy mixing on the Audio Technicas, but also use Sony MDR-750s and a paid or Sennheisers. The bottom line (no matter what monitors or headphones you use) is how well your mixes translate. And I strongly recommend checking your mixes on a spectrum analyzer. They are extremely accurate and will not only allow you to visualize your mix, but also easily compare it to reference tracks. A great free option is Voxengo Span.
@AdamElteto
@AdamElteto 2 жыл бұрын
@@TonyThomas10000 Different experiences for different people, naturally, but I would say the "bass shy" often actually means more accurate frequency response. In addition, it is always a great idea to use calibration software. I do see the generally, a lot of mixing and mastering engineers when they verify mixes/masters with headphones, they use open backs. The point about mixing in a noisy environment is very valid, though. There are even engineers who swear by mixing/mastering with IEMs. In those cases, some kind of calibration software and room/monitor emulation are strongly recommended.
@TonyThomas10000
@TonyThomas10000 2 жыл бұрын
@@AdamElteto It really depends upon your familiarity with your headphones and how they translate. I can listen to a mix on headphones and also check the spectrum analyzer and know how it will sound. I also use Toneboosters Morphit and Waves NX that has calibration curves for my Audio Technicas. I often check on monitors, earbuds, and other target sources. Comparing your mixes with known reference mixes also helps.

For a few years I've had the Sennheiser HD1 M2 AEBT, which I think is also called the Momentum 2, and there's also a Momentum 3. I don't know how either model compares with the Sony, or if they are still available. They were quite expensive, almost $500 if I recall. I use them for composing, but I usually hook them up with the direct cable and turn off the noise cancelling feature to see how it sounds. I think that gives a flatter response.

I don't know, but my guess is that the charger is short because it charger faster and that you can't use it anyways as long as it is charging. If that is the case, I think it is a smart solution, because I was frustrated that I was not able to charge and use them, but the time it took to figure that out I had 5 hours of use on them without using the charger anymore. So if short means faster charging I vote for the short. 🙂

One of the main reasons I got them! Noise-cancelling actually works even better on lower frequencies than high frequencies. Whenever I'm sensitive to other people's noises (which is every day) I put them on, and any pumping basses, beats, drums, yelling, construction, air conditioning is GONE! :-)

Hello Anne-Kathrin, once again thank you for the excellent and informative presentation. In my opinion, having the best of both worlds combining noise-canceling and accurate frequency response is very difficult to achieve simply because the process of noise-canceling is not perfect and leads to artificial coloration of the overall sound.

I generally wouldn't recommend in-ears, closed backs, or noise-cancelling headphones for mixing. It's fine for composing when it's temporarily noisy but I'd never send anything out to the production without double checking on proper open ear studio headphones that are designed for mixing. There is only a handful of closed backs that I'm aware of that work well for mixing and the ones I have tried are insanely expensive (north of $1500).

Oddly enough while I don't agree using these for any music is ideal I actually use Bluetooth noise canceling earbuds from Sony and a very similar model name, and at least the way I assume that it works is probably some sort of phase cancelation. I say that because there is almost like a pressure sensation when I turn the noise canceling on and it's not like it's feeling my ear with rubber or anything... Regardless though, I completely connect with turning the noise canceling on when I want silence... Hi! I found your channel and it's great! I have a question - I'm going to get the DT880 Pro for mixing, but I also need another pair for times there's noise coming from the outside, so I was wondering: 1) Why did you choose noise-cancelling headphones (the Sony's), over noise-isolating headphones (like the closed back DT 770 pro)? How is it working out better for you when mixing in a noisy environment? I've never tried one so I'm trying to understand what I should choose. Also, do the Sony's feel/sound like closed back or like open back headphones? 2) When going to a very loud event - will noise cancelling headphones work? and will the noise cancelling actually protect my ears (in terms of health)? Thank you!
@AnneKathrinDernComposer
@AnneKathrinDernComposer 2 жыл бұрын
Hey there! So generally speaking I wouldn't mix on closed backs OR noise cancelling headphones. It's just to continue composing when it's noisy but I always end up fixing and checking my mixes on the DT880 Pro or the HD650. Noise isolating headphones are nice but not as strong as noise cancelling if that's the feature we're looking for (which I was). Plus of course something like the DT770 Pro doesn't have all the other nice features. Those are really more designed for tracking without having any click bleed into the mic. Noise cancelling will also indeed protect your hearing when in noisy environments. Historically, noise cancelling headphones were invented for people in aviation to protect their hearing and make communication easier. Even the first Bose set was specifically designed for pilots and others working in noisy aviation environments. So yes, they will definitely alleviate any stress put on your ears in noisy environments. Hope this helps!

They don't have to be open back. There's a handful of closed back headphones designed for mixing but most of them are insanely expensive. No - It's not even a cost-saver. It's satisfying a minimum obligation. The cable is short because Sony's product team has assessed that people who buy $350 NC cans are technically-aware, and already have 20 other USB charging cables tangling up the living room. The short cable satisfies the minimum edge-case legal obligation to provide a power-charging cable.

@@OroNZ Yet here I am, not having a single device that uses this very same cable... not even the SONY camera I use has the same charger cable.

Oh, I'm not defending Sony's decision. But as someone who a) buys more USB gadgets than is probably healthy, and b) works with cable and hardware developers in delivering products and services, I'm just outlining the sorts of rationales that go into cable choices. I recommend picking up a couple of 1 m long adapter cables. These cables should have USB-C at each end, with one end having a swappable USB-A adapter, and the other end having a Micro-USB and Apple Lightning swappable connector. AND NEVER LENDING THEM TO ANYONE. Lending adapter cables, mic stand adapter threads or SD cards = throwing them away. You'll never see them again. (This is my third time replying - I'm thinking my replies get deleted because I was putting an Amazon link in them, to show you what an adapter cable looks like. Also... USB-C is already replacing USB-A slots in laptops and peripheral connections due to higher power throughput, reversible insertion and smaller physical footprint. You'll be seeing them everywhere.)

One thing must be said also: LATENCY. In the process of creating inverse phase wave some time is taken and this is a problem when playing a keyboard (for a vst or standalone) I get mad with noises as you. This is why I bought Yamaha YH E700A headphone with Active Noise Cancel. But they can't really be used for production not only because of what you say but also because of this latency. Have you noticed this with your Sony? Maybe yours are better than mine

Another commenter said there were latency issues when composing, but once they plugged their headphones in (stopped using bluetooth), the issues disappeared.

@@LuigiMaesano I use the Sonys with the cable and there is no more latency than any other headphones. I recommend that you double-check your signal path for what might be introducing latency, because unless the Sonys are connected via Bluetooth there is no reason why they would add latency compared to other headphones.

As others have said, I don’t have any additional latency when using the cable. Only when I use the Bluetooth connection, there’s a noticeable lag.

I feel like then I need to provide something extra though for the subscribers and I unfortunately don't have the time to create more content than I currently do.

@@AnneKathrinDernComposer Totally understand the time crunch Anne...and really appreciate the thought around offering extras for members if you were offering it. What about something simple though like access to videos a little early? Or access to Midi files for the demos you are doing on the videos? Member surveys that would allow subscribers to give you priority suggestions for content...things like that. I've seen folks do that quite successfully and given that you are producing things like the midi files for the video anyway...I wouldn't be too much extra time...maybe...? Just a thought but I'm in agreement with Charles on the KZbin membership idea.
