I’ve had a 2210 since the mid ‘90ies and picked a 2203 up last Saturday. Had the 2210 recapped. Since then it barks again like in the early years. The 2203 has a lot less gain, but the same agressive bark. It needs boost, I’m using a Schaffer-replica and an OD-808 for that. Still think the 2210 comes really close. I still like the ease of the 2210 as opposed to of the 2203 with boost pedals. Might need to test an SD-1, that was the best 2203 sound I ever heard. What they both do best is bark. No other brand barks like a Marshall.

I'm pretty sure in this video I was running into a 4x12 with Celestion G12EVH speakers, that amp LOVES those speakers. Id say the most appealing thing about the jcm800 is that most guitarist will want to use a pedal and that amo design is probably the best suited for that application. And you can still use the cold clipper circuit in the amp if you just want to use all pedals with your amp. Paired together with the classic cathode follower and driver stage into el34 output probably makes it the best amp ever IMO. Most people who need/ want more gain will go for a 5150.
@TheGuitarNerdShowКүн бұрын
True - but sometimes I prefer driving a mid gain rig such as an 800 with a pedal to an amp with more tube drive on tap. All depends on the application I guess. Thank you for watching!

Great video - i just bought a Jube studio and while i love the functionality, part of me wonders if i should have gone with the 800 for that thinner more classic marshall tone. Thank you so much for your kind words! In that regard, Watchin' You just happened. Then I had to pause and figure out the riff real quick cause I've never played it but grew up a Kiss freak so that riff's etched into my brain LOL!!!!! With regard to the 'lil 800, you can turn it down fairly low, especially in 5 watt mode but you'll probably need to hit it with a drive pedal. That's ok, though, that's how most people use an 800 for that type of sound. Thank you for your kind words!

Great video. I've owned a custom built 50w jubilee for the better part of 11 years now and it's been my main stage amp. I've played several 800's but never gotten the chance to spend a meaningful amount of time with one in my studio or the stage but my impressions are that the 800 sounds and feels similar to my plexi clone I used to have after Kurt from Granger amps did the push pull cascading gain/Jose mod. It's a more raw and unpolished marshall sound compared to my jubilee with a bit more sag and splatty low end/lower midrange. The jubilee is fun though because although it does have a more polished and buttoned up structure (like the 800's better mannered brother), the amp set to the crunch mode in the clean channel delivers that more raw and open uncompressed sound of the old circuits that I actually enjoy better than the amp's main lead channel. I like that the lead channel gives me a good amount of gain that I think the 800 would maybe need a pedal to achieve, I still prefer running the jubilee on the crunch mode with a pedal. Edit: I see you have a quad cortex too over in the related videos. I recently captured some jubilee profiles of mine. @TheGuitarNerdShow6 ай бұрын
There’s no additional tube, but I believe there IS an additional gain stage - in the older Plexi style amp, unless it’s got the cascaded gain stage mod (aka Randy Rhoads mod) the signal passes through one half of V1. With the Roads mod, as in the 220x the signal passes through both sides, one after the other, enabling the extra preamp drive. This is as it was explained to me by a couple well respected amp techs/builders. But still just the three 12ax7’s. Thank you for watching!!!

Have a 2203X and a 1990 Jubilee 2555. Both are fantastic amps and have that "Marshall" sound. You did an excellent job describing the differences. I generally play the Jubilee at home because it sounds great at a MV of just under 2 and the EQ is very responsive. Additionally, as you point out, it's basically a 3 channel amp with Clean, Crunch, and Lead modes. I can achieve any tone that I am looking for with the Jubilee. The 2203X is more classic Marshall roar. For cranked tones, the Jubilee needs the MV at about a 7 to really shine, but the 2203X does that between 4 and 5. The 2203X is a much louder amp to my ear. But in my 8x8 space, there is not a lot of opportunity to crank these amps. For recording, I use a Suhr Reactive Load IR and it does an amazing job in getting authentic cranked Marshall tones without forcing everyone, including the cat, to need to leave the house. GREAT video and excellent playing too! I subscribed!

Marshall should update the 800 with modern features. My old one doesn’t even have fx loop. All of their new amps should have power scaling, updated EQ, as well as IR outs like all 21st century amps should by now. They need to ditch the cheap small amp and headphones and such and focus on creating better flagship amps instead of riding the coattails of their betters that were doing this before them.
@TheGuitarNerdShow6 ай бұрын
Unfortunately the headphones and all that stuff accounts for upwards of 90% of the Marshall company’s income. That said, they need to do what the new CEO has said they’re gonna do and funnel that money into their amp making and bring the company into modern times, without losing sight of what got them here. I’m optimistic. Thanks for watching.

I know it's not everyone's fav Marshall, but I really enjoy my JVM410H - it has much of the history of Marshall in a single box. As usual, opening up the master addresses some complaints some have; it's not going to sound identical in a side by side comparison, but if you want a versatile Marshall channel switcher it's great IMO. I have other amp brands for other things, but honestly nothing sounds better to me than Marshall's. edit: my favorite Marshall amp? That's my Engl Artist Edition 100 E651, I can get Plexi, JMP, JCM 800 tones.

I would LOVE to have a 900 to throw into the mix, and it’s coming! Just gonna take some time so I can pay off the debts of the amps I’ve already bought LOL! Thank you for watching!

The Jubilee is the better amp choice for players who gig, the JCM-800 is all about nostalgia. It's the same choice between the mini-plexi (SV-20H) and mini-JTM, (ST-20H) the mini-plexi is for the players, and the new mini-JTM is for nostalgia.

Yeah, to get “THAT” JCM800 tone you gotta crank it & even the little fella is pretty darn loud! Thank you for watching!

Interesting! I have the Fender Tonemaster Pro and it has its version of a JCM 800 50 watt head as well as the 3 channels of the Jubilee head. And I have to say, tone-wise, the Jubilee beats the JCM800. But, it does require a bit of coaxing EQ wise to get the sound I want. Of course, as most of us know, there's so much that factor into tone.

For most cases I prefer the Jubilee but there something about that JCM800 tone that makes it a must have for me. Thank you for watching!

Those aren't real Marshall amplifiers in your case, you are comparing two Fendered models of Marshalls not real physical Marshall amplifiers

It really does. I'm still familiarizing myself with it but it's quickly becoming one of my favorites. I love it! In fact, I'm thinking my next video will be Jubilee related so stay tuned! Thank you for watching!!!

The Jubilee Master is how a Master should work. My JCM 2203 is worthless. The amp goes from dead quiet to too damned loud just like that. I have one from 1986, with matching brown grill cab. I love it, but more to look at than to play, at home. I use a Hot Mod V2 in position one to boost the gain. It helps. I'm seriously considering getting a 2555X for my main amp and selling the JCM. JCM's don't have a loop, the Jubilee does. I can't put a volume pedal in a JCM loop to tone down the volume. I could with a 2555x. I really think the biasing design of the 2555x is cool. The wire used is supposed to be superior too.
@TheGuitarNerdShowКүн бұрын
I agree with pretty much all that you said. The 2555X is just a fantastic amp all the way around! The 2203 is great when you've got the place to crank it and let it roar - the problem is most of us don't have that anymore. Thank you for watching!

Marshall came out with the Jmp master volume,before the 800, in the late 70s great sounding amps, Jcm actually😂 shares the same circuit in the early years of the 800
@TheGuitarNerdShow6 ай бұрын
From what I understand the circuit of the late 70’s 2293 is slightly different (and better sounding). But essentially it’s the same amp - I mentioned in my video that the 2203 basically became the JCM800. A late 70’s 2203 is definitely on my bucket list! Thanks for watching!

Not a fan of the 2203. The one's I played had a wooly tone. The 2204 however - to my ears - sounded much nicer. Overall, I prefer the 2555x; it's just easier to live with given the tone control sensitivity and gain at lower volumes.

The tone controls on the jube are so extreme you can get those old nasty bright supro tones Page used on Led Zeppelin 1. The eq controls are ridiculous on that amp

Inthis video, the JCM800 20W sounds MUCH better at LOW volume. When cranked, it looses almost all bite and jangle and gets mushy.
@TheGuitarNerdShow6 ай бұрын
I hear that, but at the same time, it gets to sounding more full. Truthfully, I think the sweet spot is somewhere in the 4 to 5 range on the MV. Preamp volume around 6 is also about right. Above that it starts to get pretty mushy - though an SD-1 can help with that. Thank you for watching!

My 50 watt JCM is a chug machine
@TheGuitarNerdShow6 ай бұрын
I used to have a 2204; maybe it wasn't tuned up or biased correctly, I dunno. But mine didn't have much chug, which is why I let it go. I do wish I still had it though, if only for sake of comparison. Thank you for watching!
Looking forward to getting my hands on one of those. Thank you for watching!

Are we really comparing the newer 20W release of an iconic 100W amp capable of 160dB music power output now using the weak trafos to compete with a 100W output of Silver Jubilee?? If so, it is a big mistake. I owns both. They need to roar onstage with MV at least set to 7/10. Now, while 2555X is a lions roar, 2203 is a volcano like f.cking bear willing to rip you apart to pieces and put you together back again just for a while to rip your head off again and again.. the hotter the tubes are, the more fierce the sound!!! 😂
@TheGuitarNerdShow4 ай бұрын
For on stage or amp in the room I agree. For mic’d tone, it’s not QUITE the same though. That said, I’d prefer the balls of a 100w 2203 but for relative tone this comparison is somewhat accurate. Thank you for watching.

@@TheGuitarNerdShow Yep...I have an 86' 2204 and an 87' Silver Jubilee. My favorite is the one I'm playing at the time. They both do their own thing well. If I had to only keep one I would keep the Jubilee because you can play that one at bedroom levels and still get drive and saturation and it has a great effect loop too....whereas the 2204 is just loud or off. ....but oh what a beautiful loud earth moving tone it is🤘 I have never needed a boost pedal for either as both have plenty of gain. The 2204 just needs to be louder to achieve it.

JCM800 is a SERIES, not a MODEL! There are at least seventeen JCM800 models that I can name, possibly more. BE MORE SPECIFIC.
@TheGuitarNerdShow6 ай бұрын
While that is true, I used the SERIES name because the 2203/2204 is what a lot of people think of when they hear JCM800. That said, I did mention in the video that I was speaking specifically of the single channel JCM800 model 2203/2204 variants. Additionally the thumbnail clearly depicts a Jubilee and a model 2203/2204 head. My apologies if that wasn’t specific enough for you. Thanks for watching.

Rectifier still sounds better
@TheGuitarNerdShow6 ай бұрын
I think it all depends on what you're going for. If you're going for the drop tuned brutal chug stuff, then yeah, the Rec is king but even then an unmodified Dual Rec pretty much needs a boost in front to clean up the flubby low end and at that point, either one of these amps will chug pretty mercilessly as well. For anything other than that though, my Marshalls are usually my go to. Also, combining an 800 (or a Jubilee) with a Rectifier is even better! But you've given me an idea: maybe I'll do a 'will it chug' video on one or both of these amps and compare it with my Dual Rectifier. Could be interesting... Thanks for watching!

Your opinion. Sounds great to me as well as hundreds of thousands of others. Thanks for watching.
@doofwop4 ай бұрын
Prefer the JCM800. It's a purer form of the circuit. Don't want any solid state components in my Marshall. More gain can be had with a Hot Mod or hot pickups or a TS to bump the signal up front. I like how the tone stack is more responsive with the Jubilee though. Solution is to have both of these amps I suppose. Not a fan of the grey tolex.
@TheGuitarNerdShow4 ай бұрын
Yeah the 800 is definitely a more pure signal path for sure - not so far removed from a Plexi! That said though the Jubilee surprised me in how they made it sound so good even using clipping diodes. That said though - there's nothing like a cranked Plexi OR JCM800! Just beasts of tone! Thank you for watching!
