Bandcamp fits my mental model of music consumption better than all the others. I grew up playing tapes on a Walkman, walking to and from school, and got paid in CDs for my highschool late night data entry gig at a video rental store. Buy an album, put it on my music player (now a phone), play on headphones. Ace. Huge selection now, for lower prices than I paid for CDs in the 90s, and the artists get a bigger slice of that purchase than the old school model. Bonus: I can find weirdos who still put those albums on casette, along with the digital download. And sometimes they even make bespoke, one of a kind art on the casette!

I do like Bandcamp a lot. I used to put out albums on tape but it was a lot of work for not a huge amount of return. Now, if I could find a tape duplicator...

For a business that would presumably rely on customer loyalty, it's a puzzling move for them to do something that essentially says "This is a good moment for you to go and find someone else to distribute your music". Good businesses try to minimise friction, minimise the number of times a user thinks "Hmmm, if I'm going to have to upload everything again, maybe I should shop around".
@StephenMcLeod2 ай бұрын
One may suspect that is why we are suddenly hearing about this 'requirement' three years after it was introduced. To give little time to shop around.

I also got an email that they will delete my tracks (I only uploaded one track) after December 1st. I took the risk and didn't take any action and until now nothing happened to my track. We will see if they are really going to delete my track, because my guess is they won't because it's a lot of work for them as there are probably a lot of users like me, who just uploaded a track for fun and they don't care what's going to happen to it. I'll give an update if something changes. Update: My track unfortunately got deleted😒

Business....means sucking the lifeblood out of you, it's not that they want to, it's that they have to in order to keep their investors happy. So, an idealistic business that seems too good to be true might just be that. Idealism and business do never mix in the long run. From BF deals that are actually BS deals. Unfair pricing schemes. Ever changing legal banter in front of every commercial move you make, you know you are basically Fd the moment you sign away precious, hard earned cash. Especially the words free and perpetual have lost all their meaning when it comes to the "art of the deal" in an ever changing business environment. And when a company tells you this is a better deal, then the one you had slam down the phone down as hard a modern phone allows you to do. Any company that claims to have your best interest in mind.....do I need to go on?
@StephenMcLeod2 ай бұрын
Oh aye, definitely. No ethical consumption under capitalism etc. That's partly why it's important to call out the BS.

This kind of crap pisses those of us with practical legal backgrounds off, the most, it seems … especially those of us from countries with actually good/decent consumer legislation … You could always sell your soul and go into ‘business’, yourself … Though, personally, I’d rather sell my soul at the crossroads in Georgia for some sick music skills 😈🎻 …

This is so hostile from amuse! I have 2(!) uploads, very amateur stuff, shitty quality, "produced" and uploaded there in 2017. "Royalties" in these 8 years are around 2(!) USD. So, what I am saying, I did it for fun and didn't expect it to "work for life", _BUT_ one of those two songs got this takedown notice for missing metadata. Interestinglgy, it is the one that "earned" me these 2 bucks. However, I provided the exact same amount of data for both my uploads. What you said about "unspecified metadata". Yeah, this is a scammy way to get me to pay, by taking down my most "profiltable" song.
@StephenMcLeod2 ай бұрын
Hostile is the word. The fact that they aren't specifying what metadata is missing is especially damning.
