Thanks for the explanation! My 2000 GMC Sierra's manual transmission ran dry about 10 years ago and I was able to limp to AutoZone in 4th gear because it was the only one that continued to work. I filled it with synchromesh fluid and was able to drive it again, but it had developed a whine in every gear except, of course, 4th....and now I know why. It also has a loud rattle whenever the clutch is disengaged at idle. I've been told that's the throw out bearing making noise. I've lived with it ever since, so I guess the old saying holds true - "GM vehicles run bad longer than others run at all."
@TigerHoover2 жыл бұрын
Is it still running and making the noise? Same thing happened to me last weekend in my 2000 silverado. Same exact symptoms as you. Debating on replacing it now.
@JohnGeldreich2 жыл бұрын
@@TigerHoover Yeah, it's still on the road and still making the noise. I figure I'll drive it til it dies, then replace it. With truck prices what they are these days, I'd much rather pay for the repair.
@TigerHoover2 жыл бұрын
@@JohnGeldreich Hey, thank you very much for replying. Your original comment was from two years ago, and they still really help people out (like me). I agree with what you said about rather paying for a repair. I filled mine back up with synchromesh too. Interestingly, I called a bunch of transmission shops around town and a lot of them wouldn't consider rebuilding the transmission. I was told by all of them it's because it's old, the design is a pain to work on, and it's cheaper to go with re-manufactured. I'm debating buying a re-manufactured one and installing it myself, although perhaps I wont be in too much of a hurry since yours lasted so long.
@JohnGeldreich2 жыл бұрын
@@TigerHoover Yeah, I think remanufactured is probably the way to go. Lots of shops have no idea how to rebuild a transmission. As for what you do in the meantime, you should find out why it ran dry. In my case, or so the shop told me, a couple of bolts had worked loose on the top near the gear shift and compromised the seal. They said they just filled in the gap with gasket maker and tightened the bolts down. It's held ever since. I changed the fluid again maybe 3 years ago, and today, because of this conversation, I decided to crawl under and check it again. Still full. Good luck!

There's also another noise associated with gearboxes that I only become aware of after installing a heavy duty clutch in a 4x4, it's called "rollover noise" or neutral gear chatter. Apparently it's common in sports cars and some 4x4s straight out the factory which creates warranty issues. Apparently it causes no damage what so ever. It is however annoying. Thinking it was an input shaft bearing at first I decided to remove the gearbox and have it fully rebuilt to replace all bearings (because I'm thorough) it turns out my gearbox (through proper maintenance and use) was like brand new. I'm now left with neutral gear chatter.
@whosthatturtle20782 жыл бұрын
My 6 speed jetta does the exact same thing after replacing the duel mass flywheel with a single mass.
@magicoddeffect2 жыл бұрын
That noise is, from what I understand, the power pulses of the engine causing the gear teeth between the input shaft and countershaft to chatter back and forth between engaged and disengaged, just across their backlash distance. When you're under power in either direction in gear, that backlash is taken up because of the force pushing all the gear teeth into mesh.

Does the noise disappear when pressing the clutch pedal?

@smatt9993 - Thank you for mentioning "rollover noise or neutral gear chatter!" I did not know this was a thing and was thinking an input shaft bearing was bad. I have a 1989 RX-7 with 47k miles that has had a loud growl in the trans in neutral with the clutch engaged (pedal up). The noise completely goes away with the clutch disengaged (pedal down). The noise has been present since new, the past 34 years (original owner), but the trans works great. I changed to Redline MT-90 synthetic fluid and it quieted down a bit but the noise never went away.

Thanks, now I know where to look at on my w202! It makes a very interesting whine which I thought to be from the supercharger and the bypass valve(and thought it was normal). Yesterday though, I noticed that it's actually constant, just harder to distinguish when I'm on the gass. In neutral it's still there and directly related to speed, so it's gotta be a wheel bearing... @BYUI AutomotiveVideos Thank you for sharing. Very educational video and extremely helpful to get closer to diagnosing a loud knocking sound I’m experiencing only while in 5th gear. I have a 1999 F250 Super Duty 4WD with the 7.3 turbo diesel V8 motor and the ZF6 transmission. Everything sounds normal and all shifts are smooth until I shift into 5th. Even though it shifts into 5th smoothly, once the clutch is fully out it sounds like an M60 machine gun while accelerating in 5th. As I reach the speed limit and let off a bit the rapid knocking sound quiets down a little but once accelerating again, ie passing a vehicle it gets loud again, and I mean real loud. I’ve ran it through these series of tests, all starting the same, steady speed of 75MPH with 5th gear engaged. Here’s the different tests and outputs: 1) If I accelerate hard, I have no slip at all and the torque is incredible making accelerations extremely quick, but the rapid knocking sounds get extremely loud, head turning loud, duck and cover loud from people even remotely close to my truck. 2) If I completely let off the skinny pedal, while leaving the clutch engaged (essentially engine braking/coasting with clutch out and still in 5th), the rapid knocking sound gets quite a bit quieter but nowhere near silent. 3) If I push the clutch in while leaving it in 5th gear (coasting with clutch in), the sound completely goes away. 4) If I push the clutch in, pop it in neutral, and let the clutch out (coasting with clutch out and in neutral), again the sound completely goes away. Would that mean it’s the counter bearing for my 5th gear? Any help appreciated and thanks in advance. It’s so bad I try to stay off the highway to just avoid 5th.

@DrivelineMaster Жыл бұрын
At 3:21 you state that while driving in 4th or direct drive that if the noise goes away the problem is related to the counter shaft bearings. I disagree. The front main shaft bearing that is supported inside the input shaft. This bearing is the culprit for a noise that goes away when driving in direct drive on a RWD transmission. The counter shaft is still spinning at a high rate of speed and can still make noise however the noise can diminish because no load is going through it. Pushing the clutch in stops the counter shaft and noised can go away.
@UniquelyDiscovered11 ай бұрын
I get a whining noise in neutral, but when I press on the clutch pedal the noise goes. I also get the whining noise when driving in gears 1 and 2. Do you think it’s the input shaft bearing only? Or the output shaft bearing also?
@DrivelineMaster11 ай бұрын
If the noise is heard and the vehicle is not moving it can't be an output shaft bearing. That said, if the transmission has a bearing noise and it's going to be repaired you should replace all the major bearings. Input shaft, output shaft and counter shaft. Nothing would suck more than replacing the input shaft bearing only to have one of the other bearings start to make noise 6 months later. Also replace the blocker rings if there is no other major hard parts that are worn. It should go without saying but all the gaskets and seals as well.
@UniquelyDiscovered11 ай бұрын
@@DrivelineMaster ok thanks. I did buy a used gearbox because my old one was crunching in gear 2. I suspected it was the synchros. So this used gearbox I received came with lots of water in it as it was delivered on a pallet and it has been raining a lot, so probably got soaked whilst in transit. The gearbox was in good working order but when it arrived, I fitted it and as mentioned previously, I hear the whining noise on idle, and when driving in 1st and 2nd gear. Do you think the water damaged the input shaft bearing? Or could it have damaged the output and counter shaft bearings too?
@DrivelineMaster11 ай бұрын
Absolutely the water damaged some if not all bearings. Anything bare metal would have started to oxidize or rust almost immediately. The seller should have shrink wrapped it to prevent the entry of water.

@raygale4198 Жыл бұрын
Bearing noise is usually a constant noise, gear roll over noise or gear chuckle can be a slightly choppy rattle type noise as the main shaft and layshaft gear teeth chatter back and forth. Try changing the gear oil for fresh correct weight oil first, gear oil does wear out of grade over time. Fresh oil often dampens the gear chatter down.

Actually the main shaft bearing is in that blue plate in the middle, not where he's pointing at in the aluminum extension cover where the gear lever is. There is a small bearing on the output shaft that serves to keep the output shaft centred but doesn't take any thrust loads (from the helical gears) like the main bearing.

Great video. The second big question is how much noise is tolerable - at what stage is it worth taking out the transmission and repairing it? Have an old motorhome, and yes I have sensitive ears in general to mechanical noses. I am well aware that a bearing often can run for a long time making noise. Just changed the wheel bearing on a trailer that made a clear and obvious humming sound, but after checking the bearing race and balls under a stereo microscope the damage was rather minor. The other side will stay on for some time before catastrophic failure occurs. Often I think we change bearings for our mental health - it's not fun listening to an upcoming failure.

In an older vehicle you can have gear contact wear as well, first thing I'd do is change the gear oil and see if the situation changes, gear oil does break down over time allowing tooth to tooth contact.

I watched this video before dropping off my NSG370 for a rebuild. Although two different transmissions, very similar in mechanical design. I isolated a humming noise to either the transfer case or transmission with the vehicle on jack-stands via mechanics stethoscope and also ruling out driveline by removing front and rear driveshafts independently. Following, I rebuilt the transfer case and the noise continued. The noise was through all gears but more prominent in 4th, 5th, & 6th. The noise was also consistent with clutch disengaged or rolling in neutral. I told the transmission shop I was 99% sure it was the main output shaft bearing and sure enough it was toast.

Only thing different is the aluminum single mass flywheel; rest of clutch is oem. Some chatter is expected with a lighter flywheel but the car was making the same sounds before on the oem clutch kit. Basically everything except the input shaft bearing and countershaft bearing(i think) was replaced because they swore that it wasn't the problem. I'm at 3k miles and the sound has not gotten quieter. What if the noise only occurs when the clutch is disengaged(in neutral) but goes away when the clutch gets applied(depressed) at idle?
@opticFPV5 жыл бұрын
I want to know this too.

Do you mean with the pedal up (clutch engaged) in neutral ? And the noise goes away when pedal is depressed / pressed down? If so, I feel it is the input shaft bearing that is located on the front area of the transmission.
@cjagz5 жыл бұрын
@@byuiautomotivevideos2254 when the clutch pedal is pressed to the floor in the neutral position, the noise goes away. When in neutral, if the clutch is not being pressed to floor, noise persists.
@cjagz5 жыл бұрын
So this would be the Input shaft bearing??

Chris Jagz that’s normal in Zs.. could be the pilot bearing but say hello to your noisy car. My Z does that as well.

I get like a slight vibrating / rattling sound in 3rd gear and 5th gear however I can manipulate the sound if I move my transfer case shift lever. Any inkling as to what that could be?
@gliderarts35732 жыл бұрын
normal... He could be harmonics it could be the vibration of the cylinders firing through the flywheel....

So, if there's a whine in operation / in gear, that goes AWAY when i depress the clutch pedal (and when coasting in neutral), it's likely to be the output shaft bearing ? (is that the rear main bearing?). Would it be a surprise if it happened AFTER the rear main bearing was replaced (I assume that's the output drive bearing)?

Thank you for the video ! Trying to understand as I am bot a mechanic. I do have a knocking noise only when in 5th gear on a motorcycle . The possibility is to be the main shaft bearing ? Thank you !

Question? 2012 srt8 challenger. No noise while driving or in neutral, but in idle(stop) theres a noise that sounds like rattle spining sound coming from right side of the gas pedal area.
@nathan00campbell5 жыл бұрын
what about a jingling noise in the shifter its self, in all gears. slightly in neutral. louder with a load especially at lower rpm, again in any gear. but almost goes away when coasting... there is only a slight vibration in the shift handle. no more so than your cheek when you hum. its acting similar to a tuning fork. if you squeeze the knob hard, it muffles it but not completely. there is no unusual noise from he trans its self other than chatter when lugging i to much.
@epica21544 жыл бұрын
What if you have a clunk sound as you release the clutch as if the input shaft is slamming into the output shaft? Too much input shaft backlash?
@crimmy8384 жыл бұрын
possibly trans mount

So if the clutch is engaged in neutral the chatter I'm experiencing is likely the impute shaft bearing? Reversely this noise goes away with the clutch disengaged
@markholub974 жыл бұрын
1:26 incorrect. It could be the needle bearing between input and main shaft.

I have Nissan diesel D21, 1992. I recently had its gearbox 4x4 chain replaced. Now 4x4 works perfectly fine. The mechanic replaced the clutch also. I have seen few oil leaks on my rim coming from front axles. I can hear a sound when I accelerate and its stays also in neutral. Until the car doesn't stops. What can be the reason?. I don't want to get gearbox opened again. Mechanic says its gearbox. Just want to get help from experts.

Will the slave cylinder make a noise when in neutral if its going out. or could that be a throw out bearing?

I didn’t seem to see any diagnosis for a reverse sound? What bearing can that be

I have an intermittent rattle between every gear, under load, shifts fine. TOB makes sound clutched in intermittently. I noticed a good amount of play on the clutch fork, I think the bolt supporting the clutch fork in the housing may be lose? Ideas?

Thanks for the video ... Does anyone has a video or link that actually shows how the stick direct or push the gear in? I always wanted to know how the stick connected to and how it works... also 1 question, if I am already in gear and I accidentally move it or shake it, will I do any damage to it? Thanks guys

My ford ranger makes a hissing sound when my clutch is pushed in. And when my clutch is all the way out. It gets pretty loud in 3rd gear and 5th gear. And when I'm doing 35 to 65 mph and I pop it into neutral, it still makes the hissing sound until I come to a complete stop. I thought it was my clutch. So o had a shop replace my clutch and it never went away. And then I decided to change my transmission fluid and the sound went away. But only for 2 days. Then it came right back. Not sure why it does it in neutral when I'm rolling though. Oh and also side note, I have been driving it like this now for about 16 months and it's always the same. No worse no better.

The problem where 1st - 3rd are noisey except 4th in my 4 speed In a 89 w100, does anyone know an estimated cost to fix it?
@crimmy8384 жыл бұрын
check your clutch fluid guys, mine was leaking and causing the clutch to be constantly engaged. couldn't get into gear hardly at all. I parked, put it in neutral, depressed the clutch, and pushed the shifter into 1st as far as I could push it and the engine bogged down -> reverse clutch slip. 3oz of dot 4 brake fluid put me back on the road in about 5 minutes.. still haven't bled the lines, but there's no extra play

Watched this many times. Thank you. However, I'm not an automotive person and am not clear on everything you presented. My 1996 Honda Civic started making a noise under the hood. Sounds like a loud flutter. The noise disappears when I push the clutch pedal down. As I ease my foot off the clutch pedal, the noise returns. The mechanic told me I needed a new clutch. I had it replaced along with slave cylinder and flywheel. The noise remains and it is the same scenario. Went to another mechanic who told me I need a new transmission. I had the transmission flushed 9000 miles ago, so I'm assuming it doesn't need transmission fluid. The water pump was replaced at that time. Does anyone have a guess as to what the problem is?

My manual transmission doesn’t have a pilot bearing, but it makes noise in neutral foot off the clutch pedal, press the clutch only about 2inches down and the noise goes away, I think it’s the pivot ball vibrating against the fork. What do you think?

Throw out bearing. My 2013 Ford focus chatters when in neutral and goes away as I depress the clutch.

Hi, thank you for the video. What could be the issue when my car (manual transmission) is making grinding sound when I am engine braking (or even jut letting off gas pedal) when rolling at 15

I have an M-22 Muncie in my 1970 nova ss.just started making grinding niece in 1st but more notice in 2nd but third and forth sounds fine it's a holiday weekend so I'll have to wait but I'm gonna bring it to a transmission place on Tuesday just wasn't sure if you had any idea what it was the grinding crunching noise is quite loud and second first not too bad third and fourth good thank you

I've got a noise while in neutral with the clutch let out. push in on the clutch, noise goes away. however, I have never yet tried putting the car in neutral with the clutch let out while the car is STILL MOVING. so if it makes noise in neutral while moving (without the clutch predal pressed in), what would be the cause? if it doesn't make noise while in neutral and moving (without the clutch pedal pressed in), what would be the cause?

Just had my 5 speed NV3500 fork and throw out bearing replaced. Prior to replacing the pedal was very hard to depress. Mechanic said fork wore out. I replaced replace pressure plate, pilot bearing and throw out bearing about 15000 miles ago. Less than a month from having throw out bearing and fork replaced making a loud screeching noise while depressing the clutch in neutral. Also noticed clutch is getting harder to depress.

hello. I hope you answer my question. I hear a noise in all gears and it starts as soon as I engage any gear and even before I release the clutch and it increases with the car speed and stops when I put it in neutral even if the car is moving so it's not a wheel bearing.I think it might be the pilot bearing but you're the expert. ps . it's more like a whining noise
@AllDudeParty4 жыл бұрын
Main shaft bearing and sounds like output shaft bearing. If you have noises in all gears while driving output shaft bearing if you have noise in neutral with ur foot pressed on the clutch it's a pilot bearing. If you have noise while the car in running in neutral foot not on clutch it's a main shaft bearing. Sorry for the late response my guy but maybe could help someone else

What damage to the gearbox happens when you start your car in gear without putting down the clutch
