@@metalplasticelectronics354 The pump teardown makes the video. It shows that attempting to repair an LG Direct Drive motor isn't worth the effort. The rest of the video I could work out. Thanks. PS: At least you could get to the pump easily. My Australian version of the 1481S4 doesn't have a nice cover like that. Much harder to work on. As I've already replaced the Vario motor on it, I know the Direct Drive motor would be a pain. Alas, I am the second owner, so I don't think they will cover it on warranty!

Thank you for this video! After suffering for months with the noise we replaced the pump in our dishwasher. Your video made the repair easy and approachable. I want to add one small bit of information about the new part that tripped me up for weeks that seems obvious now that I know. When I went to LG to find the part number for my dishwasher model that ends in "s", LG kept giving me a part for a dishwasher model ending in "w". Sad to say it took me weeks of second guessing myself about the part number until I figured out that the "s" is for Stainless and "w" is for white, same part number for whichever color you have. I have a stainless finish. If this comment helps just one other person, I'll be happy that it's not just me. : )

Mine was the same motor, only it had another, smaller hose attached, right after the large hose, shown in the video. It was relatively easy, I just had to attach the smaller hose, first: it attached to a short rubber hose, attached to a rigid plastic tube -- there was virtually no play in any of it. I found that it was much easier to turn the machine upside down, to gain super-easy access... Twisting myself on the floor, was terrible, and I could not access one of the large hose clamps to move it back where it belonged, until I rotated the machine so the motor was on top. Turning the machine upside down, made the whole thing sooo much easier. Thank you, I could not have done it without your video. Mine had long Torx screws (used by my installer) securing it in place, on the sides, not on the top, like most are secured. I had to adjust the levelers, so I could lift it up, to align the screw holes in the doors with the screw heads, to remove them (installer had them driven in at an angle). The screws were covered with push-in plastic covers, on each side -- they just pry off, with a fingernail, I found a replacement pump motor (looks OEM), online, for $72, delivered. It is amazingly quiet with the new motor running. So glad to have it working normally, quietly, again. Cheers!

Only 2 years is horrible. And I don't know if LG realizes it, but their customer service is going to destroy their brand name. LG knows they have a problem with the pumps. Having their customers waste time is not going to help anyone. A few years ago LG would be a top appliance pick. Now I don't really think they would be at the top of the list.

@@metalplasticelectronics354 Thanks for the video. It's very well done. I have a similar model, LDP 6810 that is 3 years old. It's making the same really irritating noise. The noise is present during the entirety of the wash cycle and changes pitch as the motor cycles up/down. The part is under warranty (10 year) but I'm sure the labor charge will be at least $250. I'm a wrencher and repair my AC unit, motorcycles, cars, etc. This looks like a fairly simple job. so I'm hoping I can find a pump for a decent price. I'll post a follow-up comment to help people with the LDP series.

Just wanted to thank you for this amazing video! So well done. Simple, concise, to the point and just downright enjoyable to watch. What's even better is that my LG dishwasher is all good to go now after replacing the pump assembly. Just wanted to note for others with a similar problem I experienced with this same model: my issue had nothing to do with the noisy motor/bearings issue, I was getting the HE error code. Everything functioned and sounded fine, but my dishes were soaked, and the heat was not turning on. I figured I just needed to replace the heating element, but finally figured out (after numerous dead ends and hours of research) that this model has a combo pump motor/thermistor/heater and you can not just replace the heater. Purchased the combo assembly on Amazon and replaced it just like you showed, and now everything is good to go, no more HE error and dry dishes! Bummer on the replacement cost, but dishes are nice and dry again and now there is no need to replace the unit. Also wanted to note that I tried getting LG to replace on the 10 year motor warranty since it's a combo along with my issue (heater), but LG refused and wanted to charge $350+ w/ tax to send someone out. Anyways, thanks again for the amazing video!!

Interesting video, I've got a LG dishwasher only 2 years old that had the same failure so it's clearly nothing they are interested in fixing. The interesting thing about how the pump installs is that the motor is on top when everything is assembled. It's not water dripping in, it's spraying UP. Not enough to leak on the floor, but enough to destroy the bearing over time. This part is clearly designed to fail. I've no pictures of the work, but I did disassemble the motor and replaced both bearings (and have extras in case they fail again.) I also de-rusted the top motor lid (Evaporust) and painted it. I smoothed the shaft and re-assembled with screws. Shaft wasn't as bad as yours, I suspect your hard water and age damaged it more. I used high temperature valve grease (won't damage seals and holds up to the hot water) all around the bearing and shaft on the outside of the motor, and liberally on the seal and shaft as well to help minimize water intrusion and damage. I also added a thin firm rubber disk that was about an inch in diameter on the shaft that now shields the bearing and motor from the rest of the pump assembly. I've no illusions that this will last longer than it has so far, but it saved a bunch of money. 608 bearings are common "skate board" bearings, but beware of cheap chinese bearings. You don't want to be replacing them next month too. I suspect the detergents will break down the grease I put in, but I had to try something. Considering LG has not changed the design of this pump at all in years, EVERYONE that has an LG dishwasher will eventually run into this.

Only 2 years old, that’s horrible. It’s not a long lasting seal but should last longer than that. If you don’t mind, what model number is the dishwasher? I wonder if they though they could fix there warranty problem by turning the pump and motor over. Trying to keep the water out of the bearing. Instead of redesigning the pump to use a longer lasting seal. I don’t see how any of them could last 10 years. Unless it’s never used. That rubber disk should save the bearing, great idea.

When it first started making noise, I checked, and the only way to use the warranty was to have a LG authorized service center come out and work on it. The labor was even more expensive than the pump. Lately, I've seen a few people say that LG will send them a replacement pump. I think what has changed between when I asked and now is the very bad publicity LG is getting over their refrigerator compressors.

Hi I just subscribed your channel. Good video and good job!! Just curious, for LG dishwasher LDF5545ST (and mine which is LDFN454HT), other than the ABT72989206 "Pump Casing Assembly", any other parts that would be easy to break? I'm not sure what models the pump will fit. LG Parts has a pretty good sight for looking up the parts in their appliances, their prices are too high though. I think the diverter motor is another common problem with the dishwasher. I had to replace that. And I may have to do it again as I just replaced the motor and not the seal. I'll regret doing it fast instead of doing it right. I don't mind too much if a design problem pops up in something. What I do mind is the company not standing behind their product. LG knows they have a problem with the pump and motor. So it should be automatic, call them, give them the serial number and they should give you the part. But it seems they do everything they can to make it difficult. And thanks for the sub.

The main motor on ours had a 10-year warranty. The motor is part of the pump assembly. But I would have had to use an authorized LG repair center to get the warranty. And the labor is not under warranty, so it was cheaper to replace it myself. It wouldn't surprise me if LG dropped the 10-motor warranty on later models. If the pump seal didn't leak there is no reason for the motor not to last 10 to 20 years.

I ended up taking the pump and motor apart for the video so didn’t try. I was pretty sure they wouldn’t be too keen to replace a pump assembly that had been torn all apart. These big companies are so hostile to repairs being done outside of their authorized channels. But I learned a bit about LG design skills or lack thereof. I expect LG will have to replace almost every one of those pump assemblies. Don’t see really how any of those pump seals could last 10 years.

A couple of comments have said that LG agreed to supply them with the pump assembly. They didn't have to have an authorized service company come and change it. I think it may be the bad press LG is getting over their refrigerator compressors that has changed how they are handling the pumps. If it's making noise, LG knows it's the motor bearing going bad.

I spoke with them last week and didn’t have a lot of confidence in their feedback. They kept asking if it was the water filling or too much soap, or anything but the motor/pump. Thanks for your video and comment. They have been very helpful.

Very good! Thank you! Our LG dishwasher started making this noise and now the pumps on Amazon are like $175 bucks. So we are able to get this free from LG but need a service tech to call it in?
@metalplasticelectronics354
@metalplasticelectronics354 6 ай бұрын
There have been a couple of comments from people who have been able to get the replacement from LG. But I don't know how hard they had to stay after LG to get it. When I first looked into it, it appeared that to get it replaced under warranty required an authorized service center to come service it. The service call alone was more than the price of the pump. So that's why there is a video. Since that time LG has had a PR disaster with their refrigerator compressors, so that might have changed things.

Call LG and let them know you can fix it by youself or you have a handyman to fix it, then they will give you an authorization letter and you can order the motor for free in LG part website.

Is there any way to get LG to pay for the part under the "10 year warranty"?
@metalplasticelectronics354

I didn’t try, since I pull the motor and pump apart. But I think have to have one of there authorized warranty places replace it. But that involves paying for the labor. And that seems to be more than the price of the pump from what I read.

My 4-year-old ($1000) LG dishwasher just started doing the same thing and then started smoking. Now, it won't even power on. Your thoughts please?
@metalplasticelectronics354
@metalplasticelectronics354 9 ай бұрын
The noise is from the top bearing in the motor. The bearing goes bad because water gets into it from the seal on the pump leaking. It could be that the bearing locked up and the motor got hot. I'm not sure how good the overcurrent protection is in the motor drive circuit. Alternatively, it could be that enough water seeped around the motor and started arcing in the heater circuit. Did you see smoke or just smell something burning? Either one of those, I'm sure, will blow a fuse on the control board. It might be worth a call to LG to see. They are taking so much heat from the refrigerator compressors right now that they may be a bit more willing to work something out.

The smoke could be from the heater on the pump, from water getting to it and causing a short. If it's not that, then it probably means the main control board is damaged as well. I don't think the motor would smoke without something on the control board shorting. But I'm just guessing now.

@@metalplasticelectronics354 Thank you very much. I'm pretty sure at this point it would make more sense to just buy a whole new dishwasher. I can get my exact unit for $700 (including installation) from Costco. Rather than go down some DIY rabbit hole. Bro! Your video is amazing. I'm all about repairing sealed parts to save $. LG won't send me the pump directly, only to a repair company. And the repair company will want $300 to $400 for labor (two trips plus install). That's 50% of what I paid for the dishwasher... NOT worth it. It's a scam. Anyway, I'm going to try repair the motor since it just started making the noise last week. It may still be salvageable. For the shaft seal, would you recommend silicone grease or water proof grease (two options used for plumbing part lubrication). For the bearing would you recommend white lithium grease or Mobil 1 synthetic bearing grease?
@metalplasticelectronics354
@metalplasticelectronics354 11 ай бұрын
I'm not sure about the grease for the seal. I am a fan of synthetic grease for just about everything. I’ve had great results from several of the Super Lube synthetic greases. I think I would try to put some kind of disk on the motor shaft to divert the water from getting into the bearing. It wouldn’t be too bad to have to change the pump seal every couple of years. The motor bearing is another story. It is horrible how companies behave when it comes to items you buy from them.

I called LG and they sent me a motor assembly part #4681ed3001d, it's a different part than the one you replaced. I guess the part they sent me is the one with the 10 yr warranty. Mine is making the same noise as yours was so I'm going to replace the pump like you did. I'm thinking this isn't the part warrantied for 10 years. There's probably more than one motor.

The pump motor is the main motor that should have a 10-year warranty. Is the motor they sent you around 2 to 2 1/2 inches in diameter? If so I think that is the motor that moves a valve.

So I appreciate the information in this video - I would have appreciated a motor that did not go bad after a couple years of use a whole lot more. I don't want to sound like my grumpy grandpa but they really do not make stuff like they used to. What is the point of a 10 year warranty if it will cost 300.00 or more to have a technician replace the part...

Yes, the labor cost is the killer. When I pulled it all apart and saw what a cheap seal was being used for the pump, I couldn't see any way it would last for 10 years, if it's used at all. These are not cheap dishwashers, and LG certainly should have used a better seal in the pump.

I was planing on trying to replace the bearing. I think I found the correct pump seal. And the bearing is a standard size bearing. I just didn’t notice how bad the motor shaft had been scarred till I had it torn all apart. It’s not a cheap pump assembly, so if the motor shaft is in good shape I don’t see why the bearing couldn’t be replaced. Would of course need to replace the pump seal, or the new bearing probably wouldn’t last but a couple of months. And thanks for the very nice comments. I really do appreciate it.
