I am from Biloxi. Thebuilding between Lamuese and Main St on the railroad is the old Barq's factory. The facade of the building is different. There use to be an open truck dock where 18 wheelers could back in and load up. The building was sold and the new owners added the current facade.

I heard Barq's is similar to the NOLA's RB but supposedly a bit different. The reason the door is boarded is because they are turning it into a museum and probably postponed work due to corona.
@NOLADEEJ4 жыл бұрын
That would be great if it becomes a museum!

I was there last fall and there were carpenters working on the building. I know locals started pushing for it to be a museum a couple years ago.

Love it! I was born in 1957 in the old Biloxi hospital and grew up in Ocean Springs across Biloxi Bay from Biloxi and grew up drinking Barq's. Always knew of the debate on where did Barq's really start so this was very interesting and informative. My father and uncle had a Texaco service station with a drink box and we went through a lot of bottles of coke and barqs. I appreciate the blue label bottle in the video. Those were mixed in with the non-colored labeled bottles that we would sell and the blue ones were always special. We use to take Tom's peanuts and pour them into the bottle and have root beer and peanuts! One of the Barqs family lived in Ocean Springs and would keep a Barqs truck parked out in front of his house. Not sure who that was. Again, really enjoyed the show and for answering the question of where it originated!

I discovered Barq's root beer when on family vacation as a kid in NC and it became my favorite root beer. We would bring cases of Barq's as well as Cheerwine home from our trips as we did not have them in Florida where I live. Still have my folks pick me up some Cheerwine when they go up there as it's hard to find still in FL.

I thought the difference was the New Orleans water. I grew up in Bay St Louis, I was told a building that still stands near the depot was the original Barqs location.
@NOLADEEJ Жыл бұрын
There was a place in New Orleans that made Barqs and there was a slight difference in taste. Those bottles had red lettering instead of blue to denote they were from the New Orleans plant.

Back in the 1980's when I worked in Houston, I would go to the ground floor of the office building where I worked and purchase a Barq's to sip in shade of a large live oak tree next to the building. On a lark I wrote a letter to Sonny Barq and told him my story. He wrote me back with a coupon for a free case of Barq's. Nothing finer than a fresh shrimp po'boy from Parkway Bakery and Tavern and a cold Barq's.

Hi, buddy! I enjoyed watching your video, but there's a whole lot more to the Barq's story. There was a great deal of litigation between Barq's- Biloxi and Barq's- New Orleans over the years prior to litigation between Barq's- New Orleans and Coca-Cola in regards to bottling rights and brand ownership.. Also, there was no mention of the Robinson family connection, Cascade Bottling Company, Barq's-Baton Rouge, or the Barq's Bottling Company plant in New Orleans, which was located 1/2 block off N.Lopez and Bienville Sts. in Midcity. I had many friends in the neighborhood, and also friends who worked at Barq's-New Orleans for many years. I worked one summer there myself in 1980. There were many characters and many stories in that neifhborhood. It was a fun time in which many elements of old New Orleans still existed. Sadly, the places and most of the people are gone now, but there are many memories which still bring a chuckle to me this very day!!!

I just thought about red creme soda vs. brown creme soda .. New Orleans vs. Biloxi. I liked the New Orleans red better. When health problems were associated with red dye, the New Orleans creme soda was bottled clear for awhile. Creme soda sales plummeted, since people were used to their "red drink " A substitute red dye was used, and creme soda sales returned to the level prior to the color change. Also, in the 80s, Barq's-New Orleans put out cola, lemon-lime, grape, and orange soft drinks. The grape and orange flavors were particularly good, but to me, there was nothing more delicious than having an ice-cold, 2 liter creme soda right off the line. It was particularly good since summer temperatures occasionally reached up to 120°F in some areas of the plant
