From back when groups would meet on streets and street corners and practice singing. Everything from choreography, to background vocals were practiced over and over, then they would try to get their acts into clubs, hoping to be discovered by an agent. Many of the groups of the 50's and 69's got their start this way.

I was 9 years old in 1959 when this song came out. I loved it... still do. The music of that time and the following years was amazing. I hope young folks don't get distracted by the sound quality for Heaven's sake! PLUS having a black group perform on American Bandstand was a BIG DEAL for us! I hate the antics they were made to do... just to fit in and seem "unthreatening".

Twon; want to know how I got into Doo-Wop? I was about 12 and saw the classic movie “American Graffiti”; a classic from the 70’s, set in the early 60’s, great movie, but the entire movie has music playing in every single scene, and each song is better than the rest; this song was in it. I Highly recommend that you watch it; the music, the cars, the clothes and the stories; PERFECT ❤️❤️❤️💎💎💎💎

Great to see you're reacting to some real oldies! You should also react to Nat King Cole. Known as the man with a Voice Like Velvet. Suggest...Unforgettable, When I Fall In Love, and The Very Thought Of You. They were recorded back in the early 50's. Appreciate your willingness to explore these early songs and artists.
@mikecaetano3 жыл бұрын
Maybe shoulda opted for the studio version on this one, although chances are, given the campfire in the snow get up, they were lip synching to it. That piano and that guitar with the slight reverb and the shbop shbops give this song a mystery feeling to this day. Try listening to this one at night sitting on the porch or spending time with a significant other. The Flamingos added those parts. Frank Sinatra recorded this song a decade earlier and even then the song was written a decade before that. The guy introducing the song was Dick Clark, host of American Bandstand, who still lends his name to the New Year's Eve show on ABC, iirc. So you could say he was the Ryan Seacrest of the 50's and 60's and 70's and 80's, but he came across much much cooler.

There are lots of good doo wop ballads that you could do. The Platters were the kings of that, and a couple of good ones by them are "The Great Pretender" and "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes", the latter, like this song, being a remake of an old classic song. Another good one is "In the Still of the Nite" by The Five Satins.

One of the grestest doo wop songs of all times......The only black group in the 50s bigger than The Flamingos were The Platters....btw.....The host introducing is Dick Ckark and as you hear he says this song is old and is being remade in 1959......i did resesrch and the original version was done in 1934....lol.....so this song is almost 100 yrs old.....doing my research i listened to many versions of this song and hands down The Flamingos are the best and thats not even debateble.....as for the clip i love seeing old school performers doing their hits in their prime but on this occasion i say you should have opted for the audio version because this clip the sound is almost warped.....it kinda distorts the song.....but the vocals are so on point it still shines thru the distortion
