"Sh-bop, sh-bop" Sweet! That piano and that guitar with the slight reverb and the sh-bop sh-bops give this song a mystery feeling that persists to this day. Credit The Flamingos with adding those parts to the song, which was written twenty five years before they made the song theirs in 1959. PS. The "most played on the radio" line might be specific to the US. For more sh-bop sh-bops in a similar style, check out Barbara Lewis "Hello Stranger" from 1961.

The Flamingos were one of the early 50's doo-wop groups. They were known for their great harmonies & choreography moves. They influenced other acts such as The Temptations later on. "I Only Have Eyes For You" is their biggest hit but they had quite a few good songs "If I Can't Have You", "That's My Desire", "Golden Teardrops", "I'll Be Home", "Lovers Never Say Goodbye" etc.

One of the greatest tracks of all-time, and one of the few I never get bored of; it gradually creeps up my list of favourite songs every year. The Flamingos' manager suggested they cover this song (which was an "oldie" even in 1959!) because he was convinced that rock & roll was a short-lived fad, and the band should concentrate on middle-of-the-road old songs... 🤣

Bravo my friend, you have gone all the way back to 1959 ,coming to the end of the Doo Wop era. This group had such an influence on the r&b/soul groups of the 60s.Otis Williams of the Temptations said in an interview that the Flamingos and The Drifters were two of the old groups which inspired them.I think that goes without saying, their vocal group harmony is so pure. The lead voice I believe is that of Nate Nelson, what a tenor so pure and soothing. This is a classic example of the perfect voice to sing lead.Since you are on the Flamingos you must do reaction videos to Lovers Never Part and I'll Be Home.Do this ASAP ,you will not be disappointed.Well done.

My father loved this song, he was a good singer who could switch easily between baritone and tenor. But his love for the song went back to its inception in 1934 from the movie "Dames", with Dick Powell singing this to Ruby Keeler while on the ferry. Al Dubin's lyrics are timeless and Harry Warren's melody is so enthralling. My father actually sang this around the house in the early '50s. I will add that this arrangement is probably one of my all-time favorites, due to its dreamy nature. I hope some young folks will learn how deep the talent pool is, and if you have a gift, use it.

@@darrylevans4401 Are you done soiling yourself? The Flamingos were a Doo Wop group from Chicago, no matter how much of a childish incoherent rant you decide to scream. My point is that this song transcended a genre, in much the same way The Platters version of Jerome Kern's "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" (written the same year as the original version of "I only Have Eyes For You").. But again, continue to scream, stamp your feet, and throw your toys in the air.
