This is based on the phrase "A Rolling Stone Gathers No Moss" - A rolling stone gathers no moss is an old proverb, first credited to Publilius Syrus, who in his Sententiae states, "People who are always moving, with no roots in one place or another, avoid responsibilities and cares."

That is a guitar. They are using a wah wah pedal to give it that sound. It was popularized in the late 1960's by Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton (with his group Cream). Then it was used extensively in the 1970's with funk music.

This was a Song that almost didn't get recorded. Dennis Edwards didn't' want to do it because his Father actually died on September 3rd. It was their Masterpiece and it was next to Good Vibrations by The Beach Boys and Hey Jude by The Beatles one of the very first Songs to go over 3 1/2 Minutes on Radio. Papa was a Pimp, A Bigamist, Drunk, Thief, Liar, had children outside of marriage. He's like a Frog who leaps from Pod To Pod. George Michael would later sample this Song for "Freedom/Papa Was A Rolling Stone"

The Temptations are an American vocal group from Detroit, Michigan, who released a series of successful singles and albums with Motown Records during the 1960s and 1970s. The group's work with producer Norman Whitfield, beginning with the Top 10 hit single "Cloud Nine" in October 1968, pioneered psychedelic soul, and was significant in the evolution of R&B and soul music. The band members are known for their choreography, distinct harmonies, and dress style. Having sold tens of millions of albums, the Temptations are among the most successful groups in popular music. (extract from wiki)

Love the intro to this. Such a great slow build. You have to love when a band takes time to let a song develop. There's no rushing perfection.

To answer your question regarding the instruments being played: this is true old school, cymbals, drums, strings, horns, piano's..... basic instruments. No magical instruments, just skill and talent. My favorite group. Oh, and some hand claps!

This is Motown and the Temptations trying to stay up with the times. Their best stuff is classic and I agree with others that the David Ruffin and Eddie Kendrick years were the best.

Hey Tom … David Ruffin was long gone from the group when this came out [late summer of '72] ... Eddie Kendricks was also gone. Paul Williams was no longer around, too. This group was Dennis Edwards and Richard Street and Damon Harris who had joined up with the two remaining "originals” - Otis Williams and Melvin Franklin

You asked, "Papa was a rolling stone... what does that mean?" There is a saying that, "A rolling stone gathers no moss." Here it is referring to the fact that he just couldn't stay put long enough to settle down anywhere; kind of like saying he couldn't stay in one place long enough for the dust to settle. I saw that you looked it up, but that source didn't seem to mention the original saying that it was taken from. It was great watching you rock out to the song, even if it didn't say much beyond the one chorus over and over. The funky sound of this one makes it worth listening to even if it is pretty simple in terms of lyrics.

A rolling stone implies a listless drifter, looking for short-term gain and no long-term vision. Always taking the easy path just like a stone rolling down a slope. It is usually not a compliment.

Lawyers told you to! Man! I'm in the dark here. Hopefully you appreciate the different voices which they played with quite a bit in earlier years. This was about the time when Motown allowed artists to tackle serious subjects. Thank you for sharing!

Also, the Temptations specifically the Lead vocal of this song Dennis, did not want to record this song and it almost led to a fight in the recording studio because of it. even though it became a hit, it led to massive tension between the group and Motown. This is also the last song that Eddie Kendrick was featured in a hit song by the group as he left shortly after its release due to David's influence. David, while being the face and voice of The Temptations, he sadly was also a shadow that they never really could get out from underneath.

Love the temptations! They were so much fun in concert! When my older sister was getting her license, she was driving with our Mother riding shotgun and I was in the back. This sibling was a Motown fan so I was too! It played on the radio, my sis and I singing along. Out of the blue our Mom says, "what a sad sad song!" True! I countered with a comment about how some of her favorite Irish ballads are sad too. We looked at each other and laughed! Wonderful music which reveals a truth is always necessary. PS I had other siblings who each preferred a certain style.....rock, folk, psychedelic...I enjoyed them all! 😹 When pressed to choose, I refused saying that it's unnecessary! Funny thing, at 60 years old, I feel exactly the same! 😽
