Papa was a Pimp, A Bigamist, Drunk, Thief, Liar, had children outside of marriage. He's like a Frog who leaps from Pod To Pod. The Temptations are an American vocal group from Detroit, Michigan, who released a series of successful singles and albums with Motown Records during the 1960s and 1970s. The group's work with producer Norman Whitfield, beginning with the Top 10 hit single "Cloud Nine" in October 1968, pioneered psychedelic soul, and was significant in the evolution of R&B and soul music. The band members are known for their choreography, distinct harmonies, and dress style. Having sold tens of millions of albums, the Temptations are among the most successful groups in popular music. (extract from wiki)

You asked, "Papa was a rolling stone... what does that mean?" There is a saying that, "A rolling stone gathers no moss." Here it is referring to the fact that he just couldn't stay put long enough to settle down anywhere; kind of like saying he couldn't stay in one place long enough for the dust to settle. I saw that you looked it up, but that source didn't seem to mention the original saying that it was taken from. It was great watching you rock out to the song, even if it didn't say much beyond the one chorus over and over. The funky sound of this one makes it worth listening to even if it is pretty simple in terms of lyrics.

Also, the Temptations specifically the Lead vocal of this song Dennis, did not want to record this song and it almost led to a fight in the recording studio because of it. even though it became a hit, it led to massive tension between the group and Motown. This is also the last song that Eddie Kendrick was featured in a hit song by the group as he left shortly after its release due to David's influence. David, while being the face and voice of The Temptations, he sadly was also a shadow that they never really could get out from underneath.
