the head wear that you were talking about it called a "pagri/paag" its a turban and a part of the Sikh and punjabi culture, it represents, honour and respect, so most older males and some females also wear them on daily basis, and take for example a war like situation where someone takes off their paag, it was be taken as disrespect.
