The lower river has small gravel and is generally flat so walking it is relatively easy.

Stephen Thorpe fishing for salmon with bait when they are running to spawn is not a sport it is disgusting. in nova Scotia we fly fish for salmon catch and release and barbless hook. all salmon fishing in b.c. freshwater or tidal must be done barbless

@@trevormccamon877 thanks for your opinion trevor..i think i may have misrepresented myself there a little bit by calling salmon fishing a sport when really to me its a hunt..thats where you and i differ by a huge margin..you see i fish solely for the pot and its my aim to land a fish as quickly as i can and despatch it, to me hooking a fish and playing it to exhaustion is cruel and does nothing but give stress to the animal in question..using fly fishing equipment on the the other hand doesnt lend itself to landing a fish quickly but only adds to the length of torture and stress put on the fish for your own pleasure..to me if your not out to kill a salmon for in order to feed yourself with a healthy nutritious dinner then you have no business sticking a hook in that fish purely to feed your ego at the expense of another creature..

I wouldn't worry about what trevor is saying Stephen. Fisheries are managed differently in different parts of World. Using bait to catch these hatchery coho salmon are perfectly fine.

Yep. FYI for when you do come over here to enjoy our fisheries: This particular fishery is hatchery enhanced. Only hatchery marked coho salmon can be kept while wild coho salmon are required to be released. It's a great program which provides opportunities to harvest high quality salmon for anglers of all levels while protecting the wild stock. The number of fish anglers are legally allowed to harvest may seem generous, but overall there always is a surplus of hatchery fish by the end of the season (last year it was 40k fish). This surplus of fish is given to the local First Nation band, not used for additional reproduction so harvest by angling is not a conservation concern in this case, we are not targeting fish that are intended to spawn.

Any tips for catching Chinook salmon? I fish in a larger river where water can be up to 20 feet deep. I been trying spinners and jigs but nothing so far. I'm gonna try drifting roe this weekend as well hopefully I get one.

visualkeirockstar For chinook salmon, float fishing with roe definitely works best. Adjust your depth so it is close to the bottom where the fish are. We have a tutorial on chinook salmon float fishing setup a couple of videos before this one on the channel so you might want to check that out.

littlegoobie Yep success in this fishery highly depends on timing. Time your outing with the tide, the rise and drop of river level due to rain, first light, last light, cloudy days would only increase your chance of catching coho. The average size of these coho salmon this year is around 3 to 5lb. The odd 8 pounders are caught but beyond 10 is rare. That’s quite a bit smaller than past seasons. I posted a write-up about this not long ago on here, our Facebook page and Instagram. 🙂

Stephen Craig No worries if there’s a bait ban. In fact I really enjoy fishing rivers where bait isn’t allowed, everyone in the same playing field and fish are more willing to bite. My favourite way to get them in bait ban rivers is by casting spoons. 😄

Hey Rod, I'm a big fan of your videos. My wife and I are just starting to get into fishing and we prefer to use spoons (less gear required). Today we went out to a part of the vedder but we felt the water was perhaps moving too fast maybe due to all the rain? (the lure just ran with the current and retrieval would push it up to the surface. Everyone else was floatfishing). Do you have any tips on how to identify where water may be more ideal for lures by looking on a map? (e.g. at a bend, wider vs narrower parts of river, etc.) I love fishing but never seem to have much success when I hit the rivers for salmon.

Beyar90 Thanks! You really can’t just look on the map to find spoon waters because for one, the river is constantly changing and secondly spoon waters are often small and can’t be seen until you walk up to them. Your best approach is to walk the river at least once per season with your rod and pay attention to where all the log jams are, look for moderate flows/walking speed current and stagnant water that backs up from side channels. These are all spots preferred by coho. Spots also come and go as the river level rises and drops. Good luck, we still have a few more weeks of good fishing!

When it comes to salmon, I totally agree. 😊 They are quite unpredictable, the bites can turn on and off pretty easily, they don't hunker down like a chinook or chum salmon, but instead they dart around and can easily get off if you are not careful. Plus they are just very pretty to look at too! Love it! 😊

Hey Rod, I'm trying this new (to me) Japanese way of killing a fish instead of giving it the old rock shampoo. It's called ikejime. It's where you literally stab the fish in the brain then bleeding it out. Kills the fish immediately! See you around at the vedder. We're at the canal most of the time. If you hear noisy Filipinos, that's probably us hahaha!

Hey rodney. I'm new to salmon fishing. If I don't have cured salmon roe, will roe bags or beads work just as well for chinook or coho. And also what parts of the river should I start to get on some salmon.

Yep beads, roe bags, shrimp all work for chinook and coho salmon under a float. As for locations, they can be caught throughout the river, just depends on the conditions which make some spots better than others at any given time. Where i fish there are 12 square miles of them a foot apart. 10 miles off shore. You can catch them blindfolded.All on flyrods. Im known for the only Halibut/ sockeye double header in BC.Bucktails are the funnest. Im a pro west coast salmon guide. Thanks! I usually use either 10lb or 12lb Seaguar fluorocarbon for leader. Retrieving quickly when having a fish on? It's usually to get rid of the slack line as quickly as possible so you stay in contact with the fish. They have a tendency to move toward you really fast when hooked.

If you don't get a bite at the end of the float drift, I would just reel in slowly. We're using bait, so reeling it in as fast as I can would mean the bait falling off the hook. Some people have a tendency to yank and reel in fast at the end of the drift hoping that a fish would be hooked randomly, it's best not to do that.

RGutz81 Thanks! Both rods are G.Loomis baitcasting rods. The one I was using is an IMX model, 10’6” and rated 6 to 12lb. The one Nina was using is an E6X model, 10’ and rated 10 to 20lb.

The one used by my wife in this video was a 300, I was using a Curado. That Tranx 300 has been fantastic, a little bit overkill for these coho salmon, but it has been awesome for chinook, chum salmon and steelhead.

The rod is a G.Loomis E6X, 10ft long, rated 10 to 20lb. The reel is a Shimano Tranx 300. This setup is a little bit on the heavier side for these coho salmon, but it's a well rounded setup for both bigger and smaller fish. She likes it because it is a bit easier on her arms when fighting bigger fish, yet the setup is still light enough for her to cast all day.

If you cast right handed try using a left handed reel. This will eliminate the old cross over waste of time that can cause a lost fish.

Fox1nDen Yep, we have a head recovery program for our hatchery chinook and coho salmon too but it’s not mandatory to return the heads. Only a small % of the heads are tagged.

Jason's Fishing Again? It’s the nature of a fishery that is close to the city unfortunately, everyone just wants to catch fish so it’s understandable, but not necessarily acceptable, to crowd. Most of the anglers around us were in fact our friends. We did get crowded out later on by people who just barged in without asking but that’s ok, we just left as we had had our fish and fun already. 😊

Fishing with Rod that’s the reality of fishing on the road system in Alaska too. I didn’t like it so I flew out to western Alaska to wilderness. Most people are civilized and it’s fine if you like that. Now I live and fish in Wyoming and anyone within 200 meters is crowded.

Manfred Buchholz If you’ve read the earlier comments and listen to what is being explained in the video, then you’d know what happened. I’ll C&P a response to another comment similar to yours below: Catch and release is appropriate under certain circumstances. Excessive catch and release is also a bad practice which should not be promoted. In this case, I have no problem with promoting harvesting your allowable limit of hatchery raised coho salmon because it is NOT a conservation concern. These hatchery fish are intended to be harvested and not for recruitment of the population. That’s what wild fish are for, which are released as you can see in the video. Each season, there are tens of thousands of these hatchery coho salmon which make it to the hatchery without being caught by anglers. These fish are known as surplus fish which are given to the local First Nation. If you choose not to retain these fish when they are caught because you do not want to eat them, by all means release them, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with keeping your quota of fish as long as they are not wasted. I’d rather see more of that than having peoplec buying commercially caught or farm raised fish.

If the methods one uses to catch and release are proper, the mortality rate of C&R fish goes down drastically - conversely, if C&R methods are improper, this can lead to a lot of dead fish. But I'm racking my brain here as to how excessive C&R, done properly, could be a bad thing?

Catch and release is a good way to conserve while allowing anglers to enjoy fishing, but we have to remember that regardless how well the practice is done, there is always some mortality. It all comes down to how much impact we should have on the resources. In British Columbia, there isn't a regulation which limits how many fish you can catch and release per day, but such a rule does exist in some other parts of the world. Say if the post-release mortality rate is 10%, one in ten fish being released would die. If an angler chooses to catch and release 20, then two would die. In a heavily used fishery, if every angler chooses to catch and release that many fish, then mortality adds up. This is a very generic summary of course. Catch and release mortality can vary greatly by many factors beside handling practices. Surface water temperature is one that can make a huge difference. The type of species being released can react differently too.

@@FishingwithRod Right. I understand all that, but the argument can be made that there will always be more dead fish if you are keeping your limit plus releasing the remaining. Or alternatively, even keeping 1 or 2 and releasing the rest. I just don't see an argument that 100% catch and release with a 10-20% mortality rate will kill more fish than bonking , which is a 100% mortality rate, plus 10-20% on the remainder you C&R.

@@FishingwithRod I think the real problem lies with C&R fisherman who do not use proper techniques. Nets that are coarse mesh and too small for the fish so they rub off their scales and slime, improper and excessive handling, starving the fish of oxygen for too long, even hook removal, etc. Research indicates improper catch and release can lead to 50-80% mortality rates depending on the species and conditions.
