My dept bought one in 1982. I rode it from 1995 till we retired it for a 1999 HD-Road King. The Kawi was a good highway bike but being a carb/air cooled beast, it wasn't best suited for parades, funerals, inner city patrols. Still, with the bells and whistles of the HD, I missed the Kawi. Still do. The tube behind the seat was for a nightstick. Good video. Good memories.

That's awesome! Yeah it seems like it would definitely be a good service bike. They ride pretty smooth with plentiful power. Thanks man and hopefully the video helped bring back some memories.

Yes sir I own a 97 KZ1000P, and I restored her back to her former glory, and I love it. Also she is my very first motorcycle, so being a diesel mechanic, as well as a skilled painter, sure helped in making her restoration possible.... enjoy and keep the DIY videos coming. At least you speak English well enough to understand clearly. Ride safe everyone!

Wow I can’t believe that’s your first motorcycle! I’ve owned many Kawasaki KZ motorcycles over the years. I’ve always wanted a Kawasaki KZ police bike. I am currently running a 2021 Kawasaki Z900 RS café.
@bobsteadman97282 жыл бұрын
The term you were looking for is footboards. The round PVC pipe located 3/4 along the inner and to the rear of the saddle bag is your nightstick holder. Some officers felt it impeded their movement when wearing the nightstick during riding. Some departments left it up to officer discretion but others made it their policy that all officers wear their nightsticks at all times unless taking a dump.
@postersm7141 Жыл бұрын
I guess it would be hard to take a dump with the old nightstick lol. That leads me to the age old question, do we really take a dump or do we leave a dump? personally I like to leave the dump. I prefer not to take it with me!

That’s awesome! My dad was a motor cop for 30 years. He had a ton of those throughout his career.

What exactly are the legal rules for running one of these ex cop bikes on the street? I'm also looking at a kz1000p with all the decals bells and whistles. What is it not allowed to have on it?
@davidrice3139 ай бұрын
I’m sure that it varies from state to state, so I would check with your local authorities. But, dad had one that was owned by the city and one that he owned for side jobs. When he did side jobs, he had to cover up the blue lights on the front. I think he still had the police markings, but that was so many years ago I can’t remember for sure. I have seen guys run replica police cars with all the bells and whistles for car shows and they seem to get away with it. If I had to guess, I would think that if you aren’t out their trying to pull people over then you probably won’t have any issues. Although, we have all seen the videos of uninformed Leo’s giving people a hard time or worse for doing things like riding a police bike with all the decals and lights. I think your best option is checking with your local Leo’s about how they would handle that in your area.

Back in the 80's I used to work at a Honda Kawasaki Suzuki dealer in San Diego. I was senior tech and got stuck servicing the CHP bikes....just like yours. One of the things I found out was when these bikes are returned to standard use they (the CHP) are required to remove the red/blue lights, the siren, the communication system, etc. You having it is a violation. Better not get caught with the lights and siren..... any cop looks down on impersonation. I once had an officer tell me that the bike had a wobble at 105 mph. I said..... 'yes it does'. Any other questions? There was no way I was going to ride that pig at 105!
@NoNonsenseKnowHow4 жыл бұрын
Yeah any kz1000 definitely has a wobble at over 100mph. And yeah I was pretty fortunate that they left the siren and lights on there. Obviously it's not legal but whatever, that's the way they sold it to me. Obviously I wasn't impersonating an officer, and I was on a dead-end private road when I did that intro clip. I actually recently sold the bike. And a local police officer bought it from me. Great to see it go toa good home
