CRAZY episode! Bubs absolutely hit rock bottom in this one, so sad, and wonderfully acted as well. I’m so excited to see your reaction to the next one , it’s probably my second favourite in the whole series!

Randy's house getting firebombed was inspired by something that really happened in Baltimore in 2002. A family of 7 had their home firebombed after the mother repeatedly alerted police about crime taking place in the neighborhood. The entire family died. It's known as the Dawson murder case

Also Carchetti is an analogue (imperfect one) of Martin O'Malley, reformer white Mayor of Baltimore, who later became Governor, but was criticized (rightly) for his law enforcement tactics in the city. For whatever it's worth, he was probably the last effective mayor of Baltimore (though flawed). A lot of that due to systemic issues (which is what The Wire is about). There are no easy solutions and no 1 great person that can fix it all.

You probably don't know this but the security guard in Annapolis that tells the Mayor "the Governor is ready to see you now," was the Republican Governor of Maryland at the time. whom the fictional governor was based on. Show is overtly political, so forgive me for going there, but while I don't like Bob Erlilch (my first ever vote was against him in 2003), Maryland is the state that features the most sane GOP statewide candidates (Ditto sentiments for Hogan, who I would not vote for but am not embarrassed by). Likewise, Michael Steele is a reasonable human being. David Simon (show creator) has publicly said he felt bad about portraying Carcetti as so sleazy in season 3 (specifically about him wanting to bang every woman who walks) because he never intended the character to be so similar to O'Malley, but it just happened organically.

Randy survived the burning of his house but his foster mum suffered 2nd/3rd degree burns.

The trajectory of the kids is heartbreaking. Here, we see Michael completely corrupted by the streets. Randy, who was happy and under caring guardianship with his foster mother, is now again thrown into the chaos of the system due to the streets. Dukie is homeless, too, because his drug-addicted family care more about chasing highs in the streets than providing for him. And he's losing the one adult in the school system who actually gives a damn about him because that system can't cater to the needs of one when it has so many in need. The Wire really shines a light on how all the social systems, the family, the schools, the political leaders, fail the children. Season 4 shows how we get the Avon Barksdales, the Wee Beys, and the Bubbles of the world.

Randy is a full blown snitch, it ain’t allegations. All he had to do was shut up and probably get detention for a little while, but that boy told on everyone trying save his own butt.
